Shit, that is like a Reefer Madness article about the damn pie!!
Where can I get one, a real one?
Interesting read.
Last year I had what was supposedly mince pie that was a traditional family recipe from some of my parents' waspy friends from Rhode Island. I thought it was pretty lousy. Super heavy, dry, and kinda bland in that it was loaded with spices yet nothing that would count as seasoning. I made sense of it at the time as the kind of dish you might enjoy as an 1880's British patriot who could appreciate the imperial spectacle of uniting all these exotic spices into a loosemeat pie.
I may have gotten a dud. Now I wanna make one.
I like me a good Cornish pasty.
Ever been to the Wedgie place at State and the Square in Madison?
Close, Myles Teddywedgers. Used to live down the block from them during college years. Can't beat it for a Packer noon start time on a cold Sunday.
Mince pies kinda sound like tamales that get sold in parking lots.
Mince pies = tamales salvatrucha.
THOSE people make them different than Mexicanos. I never buy tamales cuz my Mama makes the bomb ones. I have begun learning by watching and not just eating. Already made a batch following her style. But every year there are reports of tamales being sold on the street made with canned dog food, the meaty looking kind. That’s why I specified the parking lot.
Lol. True story. Rainy shitty day in Wisco' during undergrad, I must've been 18-19. I buy some canned tamales (This is Wisconsin in the 80's, don't judge me) and go back to my dorm room, heat them up in the microwave. I start eating. I'm all, "WTF? These things are awful, they are impossible to eat, taste like shit and are really tough!" Couldn't finish, threw them out.
Well 15 years later, a friend of a friend had some homemade tamales that were reportedly awesome. I was leery but had a revelation when my buddy PEELED THE CORN HUSK OFF THE TAMALE.
I'm a dope.
‘90 for me.
Let's see if I have the requisite brain cells to list my haunts....
6 (602), Plaza (quarter taps!), Bear (Black), Crystal Corner. Back in the earlier 80s while in HS, I had a fake ID but I've managed to forget where it took me. Those were the last glorious years of the pre-photo drivers licenses.
Oh man. Quarter taps at the Plaza.
You from Madison? If so, what high school you go to?
Yes, West. You?
Year before you.
dp
Maybe you even hazed him.
We didn't haze, we pranked. Senior prank day was the highlight of the year. Class before mine broke into the school at night and sprayed skunk oil all over the place. Two classes before, a bunch of guys got a pickup, drove it down to the dairy barns on campus and loaded up one of the cows. Took it over to school, put planks on the stairs and walked it up to the third floor. Removed planks and went home. Cows are okish going up stairs but they do not like to walk down.
I was Memorial class of 88.
Paul's Club (start the night off trying to pick up classy women!)
The Pub
The Plaza
Irish Pub (called McKensey's now I think)
Black Bear Lounge/Taco Grande
MadHatters
Whatever the hell was across the street from Madhatters - JOE HARTS!
Regent Street Retreat
Big 10 Pub
Church Key
Stillwaters
Jockos Rocket Ship (closed after federal drug investigation implicated the owner and some fireman and police)
Bar/restaurant under Kennedy Manor Apartments
Varsity Club (home to 1001 Tommy Thompson stories)
Red Shed (still open, get the brick cheese cheeseburger)
State Street Brats (red brats)
Grandaddy Of Them All: Essen Haus (make dinner reservation, eat $10 of appetizers) drink boots for as long as you remain upright)
I am missing a couple. Used to be a bar/restaurant over a fast food joint on north side of State, can't remember name. Italian food I think. Jockos and Big Ten Pub were only two bars downtown (that we knew of) that had two satellite antennas, one for NFC games and one for AFC games. Used to watch Browns at Big 10.
Looking at this list and knowing this isn't all of them, I am thinking Hoosier tripped over me

Was Okayz the club that burned down and they never really replaced? One of the few live music sites in the city?
