New Gaming Concept: VR Head Tracking

This is some pretty neat stuff. Using the Wii-mote and the Sensor bar backwards to get a different perspective on a 3D gaming enviroment.

Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space.
There is a lot more on the guys website:

Too fucking bad when you turn your head you're not looking at the TV anymore. Other than that, I'm sure it's a blast.

On a more positive note, since seeing the work LucasArts was doing with new physics engines, I've been hoping that Madden Football would adapt the new physics engines into the game, making the game based on real physics instead of algorithms meant to simulate the result of physics. Of course, that would take some amount of innovation to actually change the game engine they've been using for near a decade while bilking America out of hundreds of millions of dollars.

This lame, and necessarily unlicensed football game is using NaturalMotion to make everything in the game physics based. No precanned animations for blocking, tackling, or anything else. Of course, player ability will still need to be applied to the physics model, but the end result will make Madden look decidedly stupid once they fully adapt the engine to football and polish the models.

I, too, would enjoy a better physics engine applied to madden. With all that processing power you would think they could make the game for more realistic. However, with the monopoly on the market my guess is they won't.

I think Electronic Arts contract runs out this year and we should start seeing some competition again and better NFL games!

If I had a kid, I would buy him a cigarettes and Penthouse subscription before I got him one of those ex-Wii-BOX contraptions. It's healthier. With the cigarettes, at least he'd have to go outside now and then for smokes, stretch his legs. MAybe he'll read some articles in the Penthouse and learn something.
