Not gonna check trough 6+ pages to see if this one made it here or not:
The Bottom Line:
Formally Numb, same person, same views of M3
Well, I started smoking Winstons at the tender age of 14. Now I know why.
It boggles the mind that we would have advertised smoking in a children's TV show---were we not even a little uncomfortable with that in the mid-sixties? (I quit in my twenties, but I smoked a hell of a lot of cigarettes in ten years.)

The Flintstones were basically the Honeymooners in cartoon form - a lot of adults watched. People were just starting to figure out how bad smoking was. I don't find it all that surprising. Certainly no more surprising than warning of an erection that lasts longer than four hours.
"Never, never ever support a punk like mraynrand. Rather be as I am and feel real sympathy for his sickness." - Woodbuck
I agree that The Flintstones were more Simpsons than Sponge Bob, with a significant adult audience. And I think you make a valid conclusion concerning the audience and the benign public perception of smoking: it is not surprising that such an ad was made and aired.
Further, I certainly remember entertaining cigarette commercials--many of them animated, and yet it still seems strange to see Barney and Fred puffing away shilling for Winston. I guess I shouldn't since real celebrities were often courted for print and TV smoking ads, why shouldn't Hannah-Barbera make of few bucks off of the Rubbles.
And I don't actually blame Fred and Barney for my early addiction. That comes from watching me ol' man enjoy his after-dinner Salems. Blind people don't usually smoke, you know; apart from the logistics and flaming hair, the initial urge to smoke is imitative.

Accompanying my Grandfather to St. Vincent Hospital to appointments for cobalt treatment for his lung cancer kinda turned me off smoking.
