    Processor/Motherboard

Anyone have suggestions? I'm looking at AMD Phenom II X6 1090T and ASUS Sabertooth 990FX AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS. I could spend more, but I really don't need to. I'm not really overclocking or any of that crap. Is there any reason I should get say an Intel Core i7-970 when it costs 400 more?

Partial - I don't want any apple shit in this forum - please. I'm not buying an apple. I'm not considering an apple. I already own an apple. So keep on topic or go to another apple thread.

Wow so White people actually build their PCs instead of stealing them? What a concept.

i'd say go cheap because no matter what you buy, it's gonna be outdated in 4 months anyways

    I bought my current processor - an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz Socket AM2 89W Dual-Core Processor - four years ago.

AMD is cheaper but intel is much faster. I'd go Sandy Bridge personally. What about a hackintosh?? That is always fun and pretty easy.

I love the idea of AMD and what they stand for but they're just so far behind in speed right now.

As for boards, I currently use an ABit and am quite happy with it's overclockability. It's an IP35-E, so older and not super feature rich, but good enough for what I do. I've used Asus in the past and never had any issues.

I agree. Every machine I have built has been AMD, but I'm not sure I'd buy another one at the moment.

I won't comment on the CPU because I haven't run an AMD in years but for the price I'm not sure how you could be disappointed.

My favorite motherboard brand by far is Gigabyte. I've only bought gigabyte for the last 5 years, prior to that I owned Asus, Biostar, and an MSI. Each of which I hated for some combination of being overpriced, breaking frequently, lousy bios, and poorly implemented perifs that gave me trouble in linux. Gigabyte has been a flawless 6 - 0 for me. What it comes down to is that they just use more robust stuff than other manufacturers. Thicker copper traces, no wet electrolytic caps, lower channel resistance FETS that are way more rugged, and Solid ferrite core toroidal inductors. The caps, and FETS are particularly of interest because these commonly fail on other boards. If you can find a Gigabyte that's got the features you need, I suggest trying them out.

I like the Intel chips myself because the AMD's have been running so hot for the last couple generations. If they really do have the heat issues figured out, or you put an extra case fan in, I'd say go for it. You're not OC'ing anyways, it should be fine.

That's pretty much right. I like to be able to have the entire adobe suite open - photoshop, illustrator, reader, as well as word and powerpoint and a browser. Sometimes I have to use imageJ to run deconvolution or handle pretty huge image stacks at the same time. I think I'm going to go with the Gigabyte and i5; heavy on the RAM. Already have graphics card, box, hard drives, etc.

    Two things,
One, some whites buy stolen computers from respectable pawn shops.
Two, is most of this thread even in English?
