    MJD retires at 29

you almost have to feel bad for running backs these days.

their bodies are the first to go, and their pay keeps going down

is it even worth being a running back any more

No, not worth it to be a running back. Not at all. At most, you get one good contract.

MJD played 9 years and made $36 million, despite having only one good contract. I don't feel sorry for him at all.

Even if you take out the one big contract, he played four years for $4.8 million. Not a bad jump start to adulthood. If that was all he had gotten, I still wouldn't feel sorry for him. If his career ended after his rookie contract, 3 years/$2.3 million, it would still have been a worthwhile endeavor for him. He might not have been set for life, but certainly would have been much better off than most 23 year olds starting off in adulthood.
