It depends on the down and distance, and the QB. Packers played the 2-4 extensively on passing and QB run plays versus guys like Kap and other QBs with running chops - but only on passing downs, longer to gain than 10 yard downs and sometimes first downs, depending on field position. It's a trade-off of course. But SPH and Trgo both told me that essentially nickel is base and they are willing to give up runs to stop the passing game. Again, that will of course vary based on the skill of the opposing QB and their team's ability to run the ball, esp. versus a nickel. Also, Packers and SPH value the ability of their guys to adapt, so even if they have undersized guys for pass defense, they still expect to be able to limit the run damage.

I agree, every once in a while the defense is set up to allow a run, and it can look foolish close to the goal line, but that's not all that frequent, and EVEN IN those cases, the opposition typically has 3-4 receiving threats on the field (think 2013 season finale agains Chicago with Marshall Jeffrey, the TE and Forte all on the field, all threats to burn you in the passing game. You just can't bring in three fatties to defend that).

Andrew Quarless has returned to practice #Packers

    NOW, DON'T YOU FEEL BETTER?

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 3m3 minutes ago
    #Packers injury list is unchanged:
    WR Collins
    CB Rollins
    RB Crockett
    OT Rotheram
    WR Abbrederis
    OLB Neal

SPORTS SCIENCE IS THE BEST SCIENCE. THANK YOU GATORADE, HERB BROOKS AND CHIP KELLY

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 7m7 minutes ago
Both Datone Jones and Demitri Goodson started out practice inside with the scout team while the 1s and 2s were outside.

THE YEAR OF JONES AND PERRY STARTS OFF ON A SOUR NOTE

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 37s38 seconds ago
Mike Daniels very quick on 1-on-1 pass-rush win vs. T.J. Lang. Much quicker than my camera skills, sadly. #Packers

Robert Olson ‏@RobertOlson92 19m19 minutes ago
.@Mike_Daniels76 just bull rushed @TJLang70...Great blow with the hands. Raji loves the Swim move. And @BBulaga stoned Peppers...nice base.

Pete Dougherty ‏@PeteDougherty 11s11 seconds ago
In 1 on 1 pass rush, Linsley sound in reps against Raji & Guion. Daniels wins / of 3 reps, including going 1-1 against Lang

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 16m16 minutes ago
Jayrone Elliott with nice pass rush. Having good 1-on-1 period. (We are across the field; zoom lens not delivering.)

    THIS IS VERY GOOD NEWS

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 2m2 minutes ago
Crosby and Masthay alternating on kickoffs.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 3m3 minutes ago
On first team Hyde was up back in front of Montgomery. On second team it was Rajion Neal in front of Hyde.

IN FRONT OF IS REFERRING TO AN UPBACK, BEHIND IS RETURNER. NOT RELATION TO DEPTH CHART.

Pete Dougherty ‏@PeteDougherty 8m8 minutes ago
Kickoff return period, returners are Hyde, Neal, Montgomery.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 20s20 seconds ago
Jayrone Elliot stood up Justin Perillo and blew up an outside run.

HE'S A TRAINING CAMP HERO, GOT STARS IN HIS EYES ...
    HE'LL COME ALIVE TONIGHT

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 12m12 minutes ago
Half line drill starting. Lots of pads popping on this run drill.

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 9m9 minutes ago
Aaron Ripkowski not afraid to hit. Man. Couple big collisions with Ryan

AARON THE RIPPER, A-A-RON YOU OVER, RIP TOWN, CONCUSSION SETTLEMENT ...

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 8m8 minutes ago
Backman misses block. Mulumba with another would be TFL. Been active

YOU KNOW ITS EARLY IN CAMP WHEN ALL THE OLB BACKUPS HAVE GOTTEN BIG MENTIONS

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 7m7 minutes ago
Lacy with s couple of nice runs in half line. Busted into the clear.

Pete Dougherty ‏@PeteDougherty 5m5 minutes ago
Richardson taking early rep as nickel back, that's new

PLEASE LET THAT BE PLAN Z

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 1m1 minute ago
Base 3-4 featured from L to R, Guion, Raji and Daniels upfront. Perry, Peppers outside and Matthews, Barrington inside.

SOMEONE DO HEIGHTS AND WEIGHTS ON THIS GROUP! SOFT N' SMALL!!

First snap of period for #Packers offense:

    17 69 65 63 70 75 18
    86 12 89

    27

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 2m2 minutes ago
#Packers using a bunch of offensive sets this team period. 3 WR, full-house backfields, 2 TEs, etc.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 6m6 minutes ago
Lafayette back Alonzo Harris has had a couple of impressive runs today. Nice acceleration.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 11m11 minutes ago
Hyde playing mostly nickel but he still gets reps at safety.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 10m10 minutes ago
Seeing some full house back fields with two tight ends blocking in front of the back.

    HOO BOY

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 13m13 minutes ago
Lane Taylor in at left guard with #Packers No. 1 line in place of Sitton. McCarthy said Friday team is "just being smart" with Pro Bowl G.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 6m6 minutes ago
Harris can run. Blocking? He just whiffed on a Morgan Burnett blitz.

WAIT TIL THAT YEAR 2 LEAP

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 5m5 minutes ago
#Packers 3 WR set (Or, no need to worry about Jordy):

    18 69 65 63 70 75 87 17
    89 12

    27

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 4m4 minutes ago
Montgomery showing what he can do on an end around. Did that a lot at Stanford.

HOW ABOUT A FLY SWEEP THEN PITCH BACK SIDE TO COBB? NO ONE CAN STOP THAT!!

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 4m4 minutes ago
Montgomery showing a lot of burst on end around. Harris is a lengthy thumper. Broke a few in team. A lot of big packages there

WHO HAS A WHITE SPORTSWRITER TRANSLATOR ALGORITHM THAT CAN BREAKOUT LENGTHY THUMPER INTO STANDARD ENGLISH?

Pete Dougherty ‏@PeteDougherty 7m7 minutes ago
Sitton no snaps in team drill, no 1 on 1s either. Appears preventative/rest because of past toe/back issues but can't say for sure

Toward end of 11-on-11 period, #Packers rookie WR had an explosive run on end-around that got Nitschke Field fans excited.

I GET THE SENSE THIS WIL BE THE MOST ASKED QUESTION OF SPORTS RADIO AFTER EVERY CLOSE GAME/LOSS? WHY NOT MORE MONTGOMERY/END AROUNDS?

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 6m6 minutes ago
Burnett nearly has third pick of camp. Rodgers pass bounces off his hands.

AT SOME POINT RED MAY HAVE TO RECLASSIFY HIM AS NOT OVERPAID

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 4m4 minutes ago
#Packers past, present and future GMs? (Present, past and future, I should say.) Ted Thompson, Ron Wolf, Eliot Wolf.

    RON LOOKS GOOD!

Green Bay Packers ‏@packers 7m7 minutes ago
Lacy powers through the pads. #PackersCamp

Gunter with nice jam/pass breakup on Rodgers throw to Nelson on a slant. Each day the UDFA CB from @MiamiHurricanes makes at least one play.

HE IS ALREADY DELIVERING ON HEIGHTENED EXPECTATIONS

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 5m5 minutes ago
Pinkard gets separation from sebetic but Hundley under threw it

HUNDLEY NOT HAVING A GREAT CAMP SO FAR

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 18s19 seconds ago
Only two rookies on kickoff coverage are Damarious Randall and Jake Ryan. McCarthy said he was going to use more vets on ST.

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 26s27 seconds ago
Goodson pretty much on all the KO and PUnt teams I've seen so far. Same for Banjo

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 2m2 minutes ago
Try No. 2 at #Packers dime D. Thanks for the corrections:

    23 29 76 90 33 37
    56 58 52
    42 21

Tyler Dunne ‏@TyDunne 9s9 seconds ago
EJ Manuel just went 0 for 5 in this team period vs the one's. Underthrew Marquise Goodwin deep and Darby nearly picked it off.

JUST WANTED TO MENTION THAT TY DUNNE PROBABLY GOT A PROMOTION MOVING BACK TO BUFFALO, BUT WILL BE PUNISHED AS WELL

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 59s60 seconds ago
Sometimes erratic but Masthay still has a hell of a leg on kickoffs

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 1m1 minute ago
Jake Ryan and Randall getting snaps with one KOC. Palmer also on it

    He wears #36. Its fate.

Red Flags: Slow 40 time at Combine. His height varies from 6' even to 6' 2", weight varies from 196 to 201. Might be PED user, possible body dysmorphia, possibly a pod person.

Rodgers drops a deep ball in the net (after rubbing the ball's laces on the grass) during #Packers ol' bucket drill.

    PRETTY SURE THAT'S ILLEGAL NOW.

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 14s14 seconds ago
Adrian Hubbard up slow after last team snap. Meanwhile Hundley hit Montgomery on deep leaping catch. Best throw as a packer to date

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 15s15 seconds ago
Montgomery ends team drills with leaping highlight catch over Hunter deep downfield.

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 21s22 seconds ago
    Hubbard back in no huddle

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 4s5 seconds ago
And he just lumped out again

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 1m1 minute ago
Hubbard limped off after one play

Best play I've seen today was in earlier 11-on-11 on a deep ball by Hundley that Ty Montgomery went up and made phenomenal catch vs Gunter,

GUNTER MORTAL, MONTGOMERY MAY NOT BE

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 6s7 seconds ago
#Packers OLB Andy Mulumba beats Don Barclay for a sack of Scott Tolzien during 11-on-11 no-huddle. Had a very good three days.

WILDE MUST HAVE GOTTEN A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP LAST NIGHT, HE IS ALL OVER THIS PRACTICE

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 17s17 seconds ago
Jimmie Hunt with a nice sideline grab. May have pushed off of Randall but no flag. Great catch. That's it for practice at 2:30
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

It's only the hand in the dirt that matters. DL means down lineman, even if Perry is positionally playing the DE everyone thinks he should be playing.

However, Ryan only recently moved inside from outside. He might be a more natural pass defender than Barrington. I guess we'll see.

Blanchard throws a nice slant. Has shown a quick release and accuracy today.

HE'S HAVING A PRETTY GOOD CAMP. EVEN HAD AN INT LIKE RODGERS YESTERDAY

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 29s29 seconds ago
Montgomery with nice two-hand reach to catch Rodgers pass. So far he hasn't shown propensity for drops he had at Stanford. But it's early.

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 37s38 seconds ago
#Packers dime D, although they were rotating a lot:

    23 29 90 33 37
    56 58 52
    42 21

I THINK SOMEONE CONVINCED WILDE THAT COVERING THE X AND O'S AND DEPTH CHART STUFF WAS A GOOD IDEA. I AM TAKING FULL CREDIT UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 1m1 minute ago
Rodgers tearing up defense during blitz drill.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 20s21 seconds ago
Banjo with a perfectly timed blitz from way back at safety. He was flying when the ball was snapped.

    MORE BANJO

Weston Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 20s20 seconds ago
Quarless takes first team snap I've seen in blitz period

NEXT STOP, PRO BOWL. WELL PROBABLY COUNTY COURTHOUSE FIRST, THEN PRO BOWL.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 38s39 seconds ago
Nelson can't get off Gunter's jam and Rodgers' throw nearly picked off by Gunter.

Robert Olson ‏@RobertOlson92 16m16 minutes ago
Not a big sample size of reps, but from what I saw during the WR-CB 1-on-1 drill, Ladarius Gunter's footwork looked good. #PackersCamp

WELCOME TO YOUR 2015 CAMP SENSATION LADARIUS GUNTER, CB, MIAMI (THE U). HE'S FROM MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA AND HE IS 6' 2" AND 198 POUNDS. IF THE PAST IS PROLOGUE, IF PAST PERFORMANCE PREDICTS FUTURE RESULTS, HE WILL BE STARTING BY WEEK 8. YOU READ IT HERE FIRST.

    MM PC Day #3

Pete Dougherty ‏@PeteDougherty 2m2 minutes ago
MM on first padded practice: solid start. paid close attention to new drills and pace of drills, got off to solid start.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 2m2 minutes ago
McCarthy on Day 1 in pads. Solid start. Paid attention to pace, competitiveness of new drills. More 11-on-11 reps means more video.

Pete Dougherty ‏@PeteDougherty 1m1 minute ago
MM on Quarless' return after missing 2 days with personal issue: have to make sure he's OK, that's priority, treat him as if his first day.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 1m1 minute ago
MM: Andrew has been gone because of family. We treated him as it was his first day. You make sure he's OK personally first. Smart with reps.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 45s45 seconds ago
On Montgomery: Ty's a playmaker. Strong, powerful, gifted. Fit in nicely on offense. Off to a good start.

TRANSLATION: REMEMBER ALL THOSE PLAYS I DESIGNED FOR D HARRIS? BACK IN PLAY BABY!

Pete Dougherty ‏@PeteDougherty 23s24 seconds ago
MM on Montgomery learning Off: very bright, could see that first day back. in special teams asks lot of questions. that part comes natural

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 2m2 minutes ago
On Coxson: Feeling fatigued, light-headed. Under observation.

Pete Dougherty ‏@PeteDougherty 12s12 seconds ago
MM on Abbrederis concussion update: still going thru protocol

HE SERIOUSLY NEEDS TO THINK ABOUT SHUTTING IT DOWN AND MOVING ON

Green Bay Packers ‏@packers 32s33 seconds ago
McCarthy: Players are off tomorrow...Monday is another padded practice.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 1m1 minute ago
MM recalls Terrell Davis and Donald Driver shining on special teams before becoming playmakers on offense.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 36s36 seconds ago
MM on Richardson: Come into his own. Had "excellent" year last year. Looking for ways to have him more involved. Key on special teams too.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 28s28 seconds ago
MM on Sitton (again after yesterday): Played forever here. Bumps and bruises. Being smart.

Comparing TD and DD? DD had a much better tail end of career. #injuryprone

    Early thoughts on TC:

Blanchard is the 2nd best QB on the squad.

Ty Montgomery is the #4 wide receiver. Early favorite for TT's steal of the year in draft.

Palmer is ahead of Bradford and Ryan at ILB.

Bad news: Sitton's toe not 100%. Good news: He's a guy who can play well without practicing much.

Packers depth at WR as good as it's ever been.

With Mulumba back, depth at OLB very impressive, even without Matthews.

LaDarius Gunter pretty good. Hey Wist! A physical corner!

Would be interesting if that was the case, I think he was penciled in at the #5WR/ST specialist. That would make two of last year's picks somewhat of a waste.

Well, I have my doubts that Abby can stay healthy enough to make the team. I don't think it's surprising that Montgomery would be ahead of Janis. You're talking about a 3rd round pick out of Stanford vs. a 7th round pick out of Saginaw Valley State.

He did opt out of surgery, and seems to be willing to risk that it will continue to be a problem this year, rather than have the surgery.

    http://www.pnj.com/story/sports/nfl/...-bay/29645701/

I think it is a concern that he is being held out of so much right from the start. If it is just "being smart" as they like to say, I would think they would have him start out with the line to get things going, then maybe sit out a few days, and be limited thereafter. By not having him at the beginning, the O-line will not "start" as a unit until he does participate.

Could it be that he is being held out now because he did have the surgery at some point this summer???
Maybe when he realized it would not heal on its own?

Following the Packers' disparaging loss at Seattle in the NFC Title game, where Gulf Breeze High grad Doug Baldwin played a key role in the Seahawks comeback, Sitton returned to Pensacola.
    That's good copy!
