Rodgers > Wilson. Seahawks will have to be creative to keep all their players. Congratulations to Russell though...his great-great-grandkids should be set for life, assuming he doesn't spend it all on hookers and coke.
I think Wilson played this about as well as he could. Seattle really had him over the barrel.
Hard to tell yet if he got 'elite' money. If it's an extension, he's under contract for 5 more years. Adding on this coming year's $1.5M, it's a 5 year $89.1M deal, which is $17.8M, well below the 20ish that would put him in that category.
edit: just saw confirmation at PFT that it is an extension, so Seattle can officially implement a Soviet style 5 year plan.

Well, it seems good for both sides, but at least Seattle is now paying for its QB play. Now let's see how they manage the cap.

Until now, they have been somewhat sloppy with their cap, and it hasn't hurt them very much. The same types of mistakes now will hurt them, because core players with big contracts will limit their flexibility to overcome the mistakes. Maybe they were sloppy because they knew they could be, and they will manage a maturing roster well. We will soon see.Originally Posted by Fritz
It's already started.
Seahawks cut Tony McDaniel, a DT who started 29 of 32 regular season games (appearing in all 32). Don't know who he is, but I suspect he's one of the fat guys in the middle who kept the guards off Wagner so he could run around. He was due $2.5M in base, and would've counted about $3.6M against the cap. Have to think this is a pure cap move.

Two other guys looking for more money, too. Bennett won't get a cent, but Chancellor's behavior is interesting. 3 years left on him contract, so seemingly no leverage, but Thomas is out, and he might be worth it.

I am certain this number is not accurate on a year to year basis, but it does convey some sense of how much the Seahawks have spent this offseason.
Seachickens went from 3 players in double digits, to 10 earning more than 10 mil per year. $97.38 mil per year tied up in 10 players.

For comparison, the Packers this year are at about $84 mil for their top 10 cap hits. The difference can be two or threes pretty good starters.
When you have Brett Favre followed by Rodgers, it might be that way by default, but the Packers next level of players near the top few salaries for their positions has been thin. Antonio Freeman was for a year or so, White, maybe Sharper? now Matthews. Instead, they try to keep a large core of players in the range of about 5 to 15 for their position. Their better O-line and receivers much of the time have fallen in that range.
As a side note from Detroit, the GM Mayhew is trying to negotiate new contracts for Andre Levy and Ngata. Levy is, in my mind, a superb player. Not the greatest pass rusher, but he can cover guys, he can create turnovers, both fumbles and INT's, and he is a wrecking crew against the run. They got him on a cheap deal (about three mill a year, I think) last time, but now he'll cost more. I believe he's 29 years old. And I wonder if they'll give Ngata a longer contract, which I imagine at his age he'd like.
