This was the main topic in the news yesterday: 'West-Vleteren released in the US for a crazy amount. Monks can now afford to build new part of their abbey.'

    Thanks guys!

Trolling thru the thread and noticed this post. Shocktop had a Pumpkin Spiced Belgian style ale. Bought a 12pk at local groc. store when I saw they were clearancing it out at $5/12 pk. A little pumpkin, nice hint of clove, but overall very tasty.

Tried a couple new beers today. One of them was a seasonal Blue Moon variety, Winter Abbey Ale. Nice kind of slight caramel taste to it, has "Belgian sugar" in it. Overall, pretty decent.

Did you hear the one about Ovila Abbey Beer made by the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company.

This is a Belgian Monk style with the same way as the real deal.

This one is made so the monks can live in their Randolph Heast 16th century chucrch he purchased when shopping in Europe back in the day.

Willing to bet it is not for sale in Okalhoma.

I could probably find it here. There is a big market here for craft beer.

The Ovila stuff is OK...nothing mind blowing. Sooner...check ratebeer or the beer advocate website for local beer info and availability. Generally some good input from the populace.

No....have to get back to Portland to pick it up....I'm heading south Saturday. I'm actually more excited to get the glass than I am the beer. I have heard the beer is as good as expected....I've had it before and enjoy the style so will open one right away to enjoy. I'll cellar the rest for a bit.

Do you get anything from Anchorage Brewing in the area Red? Shelton Brothers distributes for them so you should. If you like a little funk (Brettanomyces) then you want to give it a go...the Love Buzz Saison is a great start.

Local bar had a keg of Darkness a couple weeks ago. Gone in 13 minutes, but damn it's so good.

I didn't get a chance to talk with the Surly rep to find out the year. I was too busy yacking it up and realizing I should have ordered 2 glasses right from the start.

That story is educational. I've drank so many different beers in my adulthood. Facts related to different beers are often interesting.

This question is related to another post here on this thread. I've never associated beer with the quote:

Was that a good year? Maybe that question is asked in terms of the batch year?

In most cases I thought the shelf life of a beer was relatively short as in 'months' or 90 days as the time before breweries pull their beer from the shelves.

    Here's more on that question:

Another fine offering from our friends at New Glarus:

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/590/6075/?ba=bros

    4.22/5 rDev +6.8%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

This beer is not too shy to froth up, three fingers of head with a good retention as well. Bright copper hue shows many bubbles rising to the top. Thick and rich toasted grain aroma with a bit of herbal hop in the nose. Deep smoothness with a creamy slick medium body. Heavy hand of malt sweetness though it never becomes cloying. Sweet bready overtones with a hint of grassiness from the grain. Hop bitterness is modest but enough to balance, some herbal flavor does come through in a soft and pleasant manner. A clean sweet graininess lingers in the finish.

What a remarkable beer. Clean with not off flavors, even the malt sweetness does not show a caramel tone to it which most American versions do. Very drinkable and a sure pick. I'll be seeking this beer out next year, no doubt.
