    Old People Working

I don't see anyone older than 45 at my company that is not a manager of a pretty big group of people.

Where do the old people who aren't managers/directors/vps work?

What about all the professional old people like engineers, etc? What the hell do they do when they get laid off for turning 55?

Some of us sit on our lazy asses and enjoy life. Work is a four letter word.

They usually get laid-off a few years before that.

I too have worked in several companies with no people over 45, other than senior managers. Here's where I figure the old folks go:

    1) The lucky ones hook-up with government jobs. Look around next time you are at the DMV, divorce court, or Post Office.
    2) The careful, thrifty and somewhat lucky ones save enough to retire early.
    3) Some started successful small businesses in their 40's and made it.
    4) The rest perish.

I'd like to have a lazy ass and enjoy life but at 37 I probably not qualified to do that yet.

If you work it right and game the system and maybe get a little bit lucky, you've got a chance. Otherwise, hard work and thriftiness will eventually get you there too. The former is a helluva lot more fun than the latter, though--IMO.
