For the love of High School Football

Here is the first of several articles following a high school football team in sparsely populated, eastern Oregon.

This story is hardly like the TV program "Friday Night Lights" where a whole town rallies around a popular, well-established, football team.

Burnt River, Oregon just has a student body population of 45. It is starting a new program in 8-man football. The new coach has not picked up a football in 34 yeas. Six of the team members are foreign exchange students who never played American football before this fall.

By the third quarter, the team was down to just 5 players. The game was called. But the guys will be back this Friday.

It will be interesting to see how the season progresses:

Six foreign exchange students out of an enrollment of 45?

That seems disproportionate. Out of five explanations that popped into my head three of them were not very nice.

    Make that 4/6.
