Hello world!! I am up!! My eyes are open and not quite as perky as my avatars (nobody's eyes are that perky). My coffee's brewin'. And I got a cal this morning letting me know I get to go to my first baseball game of the season next week. Good morning, what team are you going to see? You are in TX right?

MJZiggy
03-22-2006, 08:54 AM
No, I'm on the Eastern end of things. We're driving up to Baltimore to watch the Orioles take on the Nationals in a charity preseason game. If their pattern over last year hold (and for the last few years for the O's), both teams start really good and then get toasted after the All-Star break. Therefore, I'm expecting a good game.

MJZiggy

St. Louis Radio Announcer fired.

Apparently he had a little slip of the tongue and used the word "coon" in regard to Condoleeza Rice and the NFL Commissioner's job. He meant to say coup and immediately began apologizing for it. Just thought it was interesting.

Tarlam!
03-23-2006, 10:26 AM
That suck's. Why is coon such a bad word?

jack's smirking revenge
03-23-2006, 11:04 AM
I heard about that this morning too. "Coon" as defined by dictionary.com is..

n 1: an eccentric or undignified rustic; "I'll be a gone coon when the battle starts" 2: (ethnic slur) offensive name for a Black person; "only a Black can call another Black a nigga" [syn: nigger, nigga, spade, jigaboo, nigra] 3: North American raccoon [syn: common raccoon, common racoon, ringtail, Procyon lotor]

You can see why its such an issue. I'm not sure where I stand on this one. He did seem apologetic and, most likely, mixed "coup" and "boon", both of which were appropriate for the statement he was trying to make regarding Condi and her shot at commishing the NFL. He was actually being VERY complimentary towards her and the slip was an accident. He was very apologetic, but that wasn't enough.

A radio show I was listening to this morning paralleled his statement with that of Wolf Blitzer's comment "So Black" in regards to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

It is very possible that he just mixed the two words--coup and boon--and got to "coon", but is it really possible for that word to slip if he's never said it before?

About a year or 2 ago the LT Gov for Cali Cruz Bustamante (he is suppose to be Latino, yeah right) was making a speach somewhere in LA in front of mostly black audience and during the speach he said nigger instaed of negro. I dont know how it blew over so easy but he apoligized and still has his job. My opinion is that you say whats in your heart when you slip.

MJZiggy
04-02-2006, 06:26 PM
If you go to the bank and ask for them it's a one-dollar coin. The neighbor kids seem to think it's cool, though I don't know about mine yet as no teeth have been lost yet.

Oscar

$5.00 = first tooth lost $2.00 all others. However.....it's a little game now....they don't want to admit they don't believe because they think the money will stop flowing. Guess I can't blame them.

And now I can start forking over the big money and pay for braces.

MJZiggy

Morning All. I got this as an email and although it pertains to football with a spherical leather object, it still is amusing. Of course, the wives and girlfriends referred to in this piece are not Hottie Rats, nor are Hottie Rat types meant to be addressed. This is for those sterotypical women than don't get it:

LIST OF RULES FOR WOMEN DURING WORLD CUP 2006

1. From 9 June to 9 July 2006, you should read the sports section of the newspaper so that you are aware of what is going on regarding the World Cup, and that way you will be able to join in the conversations. If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or you will be totally ignored. DO NOT complain about not receiving any attention.

2. During the World Cup, the television is mine, at all times, without any exceptions. If you even take a glimpse of the remote control, you will lose it (your eye).

3. If you have to pass by in front of the TV during a game, I don't mind, as long as you do it crawling on the floor and without distracting me. If you decide to stand naked in front of the TV, make sure you put clothes on right after because if you catch a cold, I wont have time to take you to the doctor or look after you during the World Cup month.

4. During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute, unless I require a refill of my drink or something to eat. You are out of your mind if you expect me to listen to you, open the door, answer the telephone, or pick up the child that just fell from the second floor....it wont happen.

5. It would be a good idea for you to keep at least 2 six packs in the fridge at all times, as well as plenty of things to nibble on, and please do not make any funny faces to my friends when they come over to watch the games. In return, you will be allowed to use the TV between 12pm and 6pm, unless they replay a good game that I missed during the day.

6. Please, please, please!! if you see me upset because one of my teams is losing, DO NOT say "get over it, its only a game", or "don't worry, they'll win next time". If you say these things, you will only make me angrier and I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about football than me and your so called "words of encouragement" will only lead to a break up or divorce.

7. You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk to me during halftime but only when the commercials are on, and only if the halftime score is pleasing me. In addition, please note I am saying "one"
game, hence do not use the World Cup as a nice cheesy excuse to "spend time together".

8. The replays of the goals are very important. I don't care if I have seen them or I haven't seen them, I want to see them again. Many times.

9. Tell your friends NOT to have any child related parties or gatherings that requires my attendance because: a) I will not go, b) I will not go, and
c) I will not go.

10. But, if a friend of mine invites us to his house on a Sunday to watch a game, we will be there in a flash.

11. The daily World Cup highlights show on TV every night is just as important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying "but you have already seen this...why don't you change the channel to something we can all watch??", the reply will be: "Refer to Rule #2 of this list".

12. And finally, please save your expressions such as "Thank God the World Cup is only every 4 years". I am immune to these words, because after this comes the Champions League, Italian League, Spanish League, Premier League, etc etc.

It's tomorrow, B. Go shopping--later.

I'm sitting here trying to figure out how it's possible my dog survived on the loose for however long she did it. This dog (to borrow Harvey's expression) is dumb as a box of rocks. I gave her the yogurt container after I was done with it and she can't get the yogurt out of the bottom. I'm gonna have to call in another dog just to get the container clean. (By the way, I know what you're thinking, B, but the last of the yogurt container is the only people food my dogs get besides hard boiled egg yolks at Easter)

What crappy weather outside this whole weekend, way to gloomy. Oh well, maybe we'll get it all out of the way before memorial day. Seems like every year its been really cold and rainy memorial day weekend. Hopefully this year it changes.

MJZiggy
05-14-2006, 09:18 AM
Good luck with that. It's fairly gloomy here too today, though not as bad as the thunderstorms they were predicting. My insane dog (not the stupid one) hates storms.

chain_gang
05-14-2006, 09:24 AM
Yeah my dog hates the storms too, at night if it's thundering out he'll jump on the bed and barrel under the blankets. It wouldn't bother me except he's a 95 lb lab. During the day if it's storming he goes and hides in his cage all day. He's also such a big wuss if it's windy outside at night and he heres the branches creaking he runs back into the house with his tail between his legs.

MJZiggy
05-14-2006, 09:30 AM
I wish that's all mine did. She paces, pants and whines at the top of her voice. It's a little bothersome with those 3 a.m. storms. The vet says that as she gets older she will get worse. I can hardly wait. So far, it seems the best remedy is a radio in the bathroom set to white noise. I'm just glad the other dog is too stupid to care about little things like storms. She just checks with me and as long as I'm ok with whatever's worried her, she's fine.

I'm going to a formal on Sat. and all the formal dresses are these little strappy things, so I made a fuzzy wrap to go with my strappy dress. It's a little long, so I'm going to have to fold it back some, but it's done. It's baby blue and fuzzy with that loose knit like expensive sweaters.

Knitting's not really that hard, it was just a challenge for me because I crochet and couldn't figure out how to catch the yarn without a hook.

Good morining fellow Rats. It's the weekend and a great day outside(finally). I still have NBA fever right now. These are some of the best playoff games that I have seen in a long time. Almost all of them are close. If you want offense check out the suns vs Clippers series, or the Mavs and Spurs. If you are a defensive fanatic check out the piston vs Cavs series. I like a little variety in my life so I'm loving it all. WOOO!!!

With her killer graces and her secret places
That no boy can fill with her hands on her hips
Oh and that smile on her lips
Because she knows that it kills me
With her soft french cream
Standing in that doorway like a dream
I wish she'd just leave me alone
Because french cream won't soften them boots
And french kisses will not break that heart of stone
With her long hair falling
And her eyes that shine like a midnight sun
Oh-o she's the one, she's the one

That thunder in your heart
At night when you're kneeling in the dark
It says you're never gonna leave her
But there's this angel in her eyes
That tells such desperate lies
And all you want to do is believe her
And tonight you'll try just one more time
To leave it all behind and to break on through
Oh she can take you, but if she wants to break you
She's gonna find out that ain't so easy to do
And no matter where you sleep tonight or how far you run
Oh-o she's the one, she's the one

Oh-o and just one kiss
She'd fill them long summer nights
With her tenderness that secret pact you made
Back when her love could save you from the bitterness
Oh she's the one, oh she's the one
Oh she's the one, oh she's the one
Oh she's the one, oh she's the one

How could that make you sad, MJZ???

The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks

Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road

Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken

There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind
So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win

There's something given up there. Something lost. Don't know exactly. Is it in the melody? The struggle?

I had a glass (OK, a pitcher) of Spotted Cow in your honor Friday afternoon.

OMG--the highlight of the trip: In between Verona and Belleville is a town called Basco. For those of you familiar with Dane county--about two miles south of Paoli, you turn east onto Henry Road. About two tenths of a mile on the left is Dot's Bar. Park in the gravel lot on the west side of the house and go down the stairs to the basement. (That's right, in case you missed it--the bar is in the basement of somebody's house!!!) If you're over 6 feet tall, you aren't gonna be comfortable down there. Anyway, 4 cans of beer cost $5.00, the jukebox played four country songs for a buck, and EVERYONE in the place was intoxicated when we got there about 4:30 on Friday. A good time was had by all. I'm DEFINITELY going back.

4 stars out of 5--go yourself and tell Shirley Iron Mike sent you.

New Glarus:

I had 2 New Glarus Tail Waggers with lunch at The Ott Haus

I had about 5 wine samples at the Primrose Winery

I had 3 LaCrosse Lagers at the Sportsmens Bar

I had 2 New Glarus Totally Nakeds at Deininger's

I had 1 New Glarus Yokel at Puempel's Old Tavern (bartender was a bitch)

I had 3 samples of Spotted Cow, Fat Squirrel and Road Slush at New Glarus Brewery

By the time I got to Dot's it was Old Style all the way.

(Never made it to Capital Brewery..... )

I forgot what I had at The Essen Haus--but it was GOOOOOOOOD!!!!

On one level, the songs may seem sad because they are really about people in a blue collar situation whose lives seem to be taking them nowhere. However, a common thread in the songs is that the writer refuses to succumb to the despair that seems to surround him. As he says at the end of Thunder Road, "It's a town full of losers, but I'm pulling out of here to win." That's only sad if you think he can't possibly win. Even then, I would argue that sadness really comes from accepting your dismal fate, instead of going down with a fight.

I suppose it is a mark of Springsteen's greatness that his songs can lead to a discussion like this one.

I suppose it is a mark of Springsteen's greatness that his songs can lead to a discussion like this one.

That's why I'm saying "Darkness on the Edge of Town" has the sad songs:

In the summer that I was baptized
my father held me to his side
As they put me to the water
he said how on that day I cried
We were prisoners of love, a love in chains
He was standin' in the door I was standin' in the rain
With the same hot blood burning in our veins
Adam raised a Cain

All of the old faces
ask you why you're back
They fit you with position
and the keys to your daddy's Cadillac
In the darkness of your room
your mother calls you by your true name
You remember the faces, the places, the names
You know it's never over it's relentless as the rain
Adam raised a Cain

In the Bible Cain slew Abel
and East of Eden he was cast
You're born into this life paying
for the sins of somebody else's past
Daddy worked his whole life for nothing but the pain
Now he walks these empty rooms looking for something to blame
You inherit the sins, you inherit the flames
Adam raised a Cain

Lost but not forgotten, from the dark heart of a dream
Adam raised a Cain

But I don't have Darkness on the Edge of Town so I wouldn't know. Yet The Wall does not make me sad except for one verse in Comfortably Numb

When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
the child is grown, the dream is gone

The rest of his trip down insanity lane, I'm fine with but this and Bruce expecting Mary to take off with him because she's alright and all the other guys are gone. And don't get me started on Eddie.

Here's an earlier version of "Thunder Road" called "Wings For Wheels"

I guess I can see the desperation at the situation (with some inherent sadness,) but I also see the hope for the future:

Wings For Wheels
The screen door slams, Christine's (Angelina's) dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
(Hey) that's me (babe) and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone (in that mirror) again tonight
Don't run back inside, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe you (we) ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith (well woman) there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but hey (baby, ah) you're alright
And that's alright with me
This 442 is gonna overheat
Make up your mind girl I gotta get her back out on the street
I know you're lonely like me so baby don't try and fake it
I'm no prince and I can't lay the stars at your feet
But I got this old car and she's pretty tough to beat
There's plenty of room in my front seat, baby if you wanna take it

Oh roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
It's like the rushing touch, the dirty wings them highway Angels wear
Well tonight we're gonna find out how it feels
I'm gonna trade in your wings - for wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting down on the tracks
Ah, mama, come take my hand (Well now try hard Chrissie to understand)
We're gonna ride all the way to the promised land
Oh I'm gonna dance all the way, dance all the way
(Babe if you're born with nothing in your hands
Hey it's your only chance)
Well I don't know but baby I've been told
There's something waiting for us, down that dirty road
Oh take a chance, take a chance, take a chance
(Oh I wish you would come
So leave what you've lost, leave what's grown old on Thunder Road)

Well now I bought this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
I got my car parked out back if you're ready to take that long walk
>From your front porch to my front seat
Well I think we could take it all babe, just you and me
Climb in back baby, the ride's for free
Oh come take my hand, we're gonna ride all the way to the promised land
We'll dance all the way
Oh baby I don't know but I've been told
There's something waiting for us, down that dirty road
If we take our chance, take our chance

Now the season's over and I feel it getting cold
I wish I could take you to some sandy beach where we'd never grow old
Ah but baby you know that's just jive
But tonight's bustin' open and I'm alive
Oh do (baby) what you can to make me feel like a man
But this 4/4/2's gonna overheat
Make up your mind girl, I gotta get her back out on the street
I know you're lonely like me, oh so don't fake it
And maybe I can't lay the stars at your feet
But I got this old car and she's pretty tough to beat
There's plenty of room in my front seat
Oh if you think you can make it, climb in (So Christine climb in)
This is town full of losers and baby I was born to win

I'm ready for some real spring weather. Gotta be any day now...

We finally have a little thaw going on up here....I was in Portland over the weekend and it was 75...hard to come home.

We had a thaw, now it's cold again. Might not even reach 60 today.

How awful! How can you ever stand it? April 8, and it might not reach 60!

I'm assuming we will not longer be rats soon. Wonder what we will call ourselves ? We're an invisible identity now.

I could go for Sportsbubbler cause I want to meet that hot blonde chick; maybe I can hire the bubbler girl to be my nanny or something

You mean the new owner is going to try to turn us into something respectable? Never happen.
