Does anybody have a list of free agents for 2008? I would love to see such a list and speculate as to its possible impact on the 2008 Green Bay Packers.

PackerReport.com has learned that the Green Bay Packers have signed the following players to free agent contracts this week:
-- WR Chris Francies
-- LB Spencer Havner
-- DT Alfred Malone
-- OT's Chris Patrick, Cliff Washburn
-- CB Joe Porter
-- OG Cameron Stephenson
-- RB Corey White

All of the aforementioned players finished the 2007 season on the team's practice squad. Patrick was on the practice squad/injured list.

Francies was on the team's practice sqaud for all but one game this season - Sept. 23 against San Diego - but he did not play. He played in seven games as a rookie in 2006, making two catches for 16 yards.

Cory White ran the ball real well in Pre-season and I think another good summer and he might make an actual roster, whether or not it is in Green Bay depends on how the Packers other young running backs pan out.

Asante Samuel, UFA, New England Patriots
Samuel is quickly becoming known as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, having posted a league-best ten interceptions last season. He has followed it up with six interceptions this season, and while his interception totals have been impressive, so has his ability to stick to receivers on a regular basis. He’s shutdown quality receivers, helping the Patriots to an undefeated record through so far. If Samuel is not signed to an extension, he’ll command big dollars on the market.

Please :) I know I know too much for old guy but damn wouldnt it be nice to have Harris as our nickle!

Like Nate Clements last year, I think there is buyer beware for Samuel. One report said the Patriots are likely to let him walk because they thinks their system has made him look like a better player than he is. I'm afraid he's going to get Champ Bailey money, but won't perform like that with another team. For the money they are likely to get, I think I'd take Marcus Trufant or Nnadmi Asomugha over Samuel.

Asomugha is young (I believe this was his third year) and played well under Rob Ryan two years ago. Then again, Burgess was unblockable that year evidently and probably made him look better than he is.

Regardless, I'd look into bringing him in.

edit:

Nevermind, he is 26 and has been playing since 2k3. Still, I think he's good.

Asomugha isn't just good, he's likely one of the top five corners in the game. His stats aren't stellar because nobody throws on him. I really like Trufant also. I think both guys are comparable to Samuel, and they are likely to get less money.

Im with ANYONE that can cover a big WR after Harris was embarassed in the two big games we played this year...he looked lost.

Yep, thats the guy I really want. Asomugha is very good and plays bump and run coverage as well. Just a prefect fix and a lot better than Harris.

Dallas has two key starters (Flozell Adams and Ken Hamlin) as well as a nominal starter/key reserve (Julius Jones) poised for UFA. Anyone know if they plan on franchising Adams?

I wouldn't mind the Packers throwing money at Randal Gay from New England. He is a decent corner back that has filled in as a starter for the Pats a time or two.

Does anyone know the Colts cap situation. What if they don't have enough to tag or sign Clark? Now thats a guy we should go after if the opportunity arises. You can count on two hands the number of TE's in the league that have his ability.

I agree with this. Samuel is going to break the bank for the team that goes after him, but Gay would be a starter if it wasn't for Samuel and Harrison on the Patriots.

The Packers need to get a power runner, an improved secondary, and depth on the OL.

Clark may be a pipedream, but I think we could get one of their starting OGs (Scott or Lilja).

Nnamdi Asomugha is a big tough kid who is getting ready to blossom. He was a former #1 of the Raiders. He's 6'2" 210 with no flaws. Can play bump and run, knows a wide variety of schemes, & plays the run with a vengeance. He has played safety in the past, which would add flexibility if we got in a pinch He had an 8 pick season a few years ago when they used to try him. Now, everybody throws to the other side.

If the price was right, he'd be a great addition.

I think he's a prototype, even if he commands a Woodson-esque deal, I'd love to have him.

We got a lot of room. Now. After a bit we will be hard pressed to just re-sign all our young stars.

Asomugha knocks your eyes out when you see him play. Tough, flashy, smart. He had a great game I saw him play in He was very impressive in a game in which his team got blown out. He's a battler and a very much a finished product.

He just plays on a suck team.

What are the chances we could pick up Jared Allen? He could spell KGB AND Kaampman. As Nutz said in his nice read, Kampmann looked tired and beat in the Giants game, and gets too many snaps. ???

I'd like to see the Packers spend on a top tier offensive lineman. Maybe a guard. I don't think they can count on what they got, next year could be inconsistent again.
