This is partly for packinpatland and partly for whoever else has knowledge of wine.

I'll run down my wine tastes so far and hopefully someone can give me general direction of where to try next.

The only wine I've drinken that I really like has been Merlot. I want to try other wines (between 10 and 20 dollars). I'd even buy it and age it for a couple years if I had to.

I don't like Chardonnay (too dry). I don't like Shiraz (or at least the spicey bottle I had). I don't like white Zin (too light, I can't put my finger on it, but I like a little body to my wine).

So far, I've really liked Merlot. I sampled some cabernet souvignon and liked it, but I like to recreational drink and that seemed more like a meal sipping wine.

OK pros, I've given you all I know about what I like about wine. You have any suggestions? :)

If you do, thanks, I hate buying wine and then being pissed off cuz it tastes like shit. That's why the last 20 bottles I've boughten have been merlot and even the worst, acidy merlot is better than Chardonnay or that spicy Shiraz crap I had :) Anyway, I'm ready to go outside my wine comfort zone and try different wines even if I have to choke down some bad wine. My hope is to get some general direction if anyone has it? ? ??

Try a nice port and if that doesn't work, try a riesling. But why not just do a wine tasting so you can try a bunch of different things and figure out what you like?

JH,

I will have to keep tabs on this. I want broaden my horizons as well. I, like Merlot the most. But I do like Shirazes. I do like Chiantis. I can deal with Chardonnay. I have a tough time with REALLY dry wines.

For a brand, Kenwood puts on some nice, reasonably priced wines. Have received a Zinfandel (red) from a website client it was fantastic.

Also, if you like to try something different, try an ice wine. Had some in Ontario on a trip to Niagara Falls. It is an excellent dessert wine. Jackson Triggs has a 2005 and 2006 ice wine that's pretty good.

Here's a link....

Hope this is a start.....

Oh yeah, I've tried Reisling. I'd say it's pretty safe. I'd say after Merlot, it's probably 2nd.

I still think there is something I'm missing. Something very similar to Merlot but more perfect.

I think the wine tasting is the way to go. We have a nice little wine store near by that has wine tasting events.

What Shiraz did you drink that was to "spicy"? I'm confused by that.... I can throw a bunch of reasonably priced reds out there for you to try but there is only going to be ONE merlot on the list and the rest will be blends, shiraz, cabs, a zin or two, chianti and on and on....For a nice refreshing balanced white find a Vino Verde (Portugal) and a Giesen or Matua Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand).

More on the reds later.....don't be a pussy.

RashanGary
02-07-2008, 10:50 PM
Oh yeah, I've had Chianti a couple times too. I really should start records again and not delete them so I remember this. I thought the Chianti was alright too. I'd compare the Chianti I had to an average bottle of Merlot as far as how much I liked it. If I recall correctly, Chianti was a little bit safer too. Nothing real impactfull about it but nothing to turn you off either.

And I agree with you, I hate super dry wines. I don't really like super sweet wines either.

I've also had Red Zin and I thought it was OK. It had a little too much umph for me. I could see warming up to it over time, but right now something a little less extreme is where it's at for me.

I'm no wine expert. But there is a few I'd recommend.

Have you all seen the movie 'Sideways'?............NO MERLOT!

Actually, I am partial to the reds. The best domestics that I regularly have, (got a glass in hand) have come from the Russian River area of Sonoma, CA. Two in particular are Hahn and Ravenswood. I like their Cabernet Savignon. Rabbit Run is good too.

There's some really good reds from South Africa and Australia, but I'd rather buy US.

Having said that.........my all time favorite has been (we had two bottles, one remains unopened) is Chateau Le Bon Pasteur 1993, it's a blend of 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Am waiting for a special occasion to uncork that one. Perhaps SB next year?

When the weather gets warm, there are times I'd rather drink a white. My favorite is Ecco Domani, it's an Italian Pinot Grigio.......'softer' than a Chardonay. I've never had anyone not like it.

So that's it.......my very uncomplicated take on wine.

Another 'wine' movie is 'A Good Year'.........excellent. Salut!

I like Wild Horse Red wines

http://www.wildhorsewinery.com/

I like Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio

http://www.santamargherita.com/prodotti_e/inimitabili/index.shtml

Wild Horse wines are typically $15-20 per bottle
Santa Margherita is $25 a bottle

I drink the brands above on special occasions.

For normal meals I can't justify spending that much so I just try to match the wine with the food I'm eating. I try to stay between $10-$15 range. I haven't found a wine less than $10 that is worth drinking

packinpatland
02-08-2008, 12:40 PM
I certainly agree with you on the Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio. Will have to look into the Wild Horse.

And altho what you said about under $10 is true, I've been finding that some of the pricier bottles don't always live up to the cost.

Lately I've been going to weekly winetastings (it's winter, not much else to do) and only buying the more expensive stuff, and sometimes not... after I've had a taste.

Just a note. The vineyards in Sonoma (most) don't charge for tasting, whereas the ones in Napa do. I found the ones in Oregon also had no fee.
This summer I'm going to try out on Long Island.
I love trying local wines. Here in CT. One of the best is Jonathan Edwards.

http://www.jedwardswinery.com/wines/

I may be biased, but it's worth a try.

Anyone else have a local wine they'd recommend?

There is a little wine store in West DePere (just south of GB for those who don't live here) called the wine cellar.

It's not one of those fancy little wine stores, it's sort low budget the way it's set up, but they have a guy there, the wine guy as I know him, who is excellent and suggesting wines. I think he drinks alot. Anyway. . .

I went today and bought two bottles of pinot noir on his recommendation. One is Forest Glenn (cheap, but the guy said it was a good cheap bottle of pinot) and the other, Grayson.

I've heard good things about Pinot so I'm excited to give it a test run.

JH - Have you been to Festival on Mason St lately? They totally remodeled their liquor store and it's awesome. Grocery shopping and wine tasting go hand in hand  Anyhow, I just picked up some Hungarian wine and it's soooo good.

If you like to sample different beer without having to buy a 6 pack of the same, they also have a huge refridgerated section of single beers from all over the place. I've never seen that where you can mix beer like that. I've seen it in 3.2 beer & you can only have two drinks an hour Utah but not WI - makes no sense!

Is there a good wine to develop a taste for wine? I cannot stomach it. It is offensive to my pallet.

Anyone a scotch drinker here? I am trying to get down on the stuff but its intense. I haven't tried a single malt yet, only some mid-range mixed malts.

Grow a pair of balls and drink some Glenlivet.
P.S. If you can't stomach wine, you definately can't stomach scotch

Salut!

I just fell completely in love with you after reading this post. And for EVERYONE else here that responded, I feel really stupid, in that, I have never even sipped wine before, and I can't believe all you have and know stuff about it. Very impressive, and where have I been all my life?

Perhaps wait a couple days before the wine sampling commences...

I liked it. I've only had a couple bottles of Merlot since I've begun wine drinking that really blew me away. Other than those couple bottles (don't even remember the maker), this Pinot was right up there with what I hope for in a decent bottle of wine. I wasn't disappointed at all. I know I'll buy more bottles of Pinot Noir. The price was good at ~ $10.

I plan on drinking about one bottle per month over the course of my life so I think I'll just buy one bottle to age each month. I'll record when it should reach it's prime, where it's stored on the shelf, ect. . . . I'll keep it in an excel file, then in a couple years, I can just sort it according to what is peaking, look over two excel fields and see where it's stored in my cellar (basement shelving unit that I'm going to build), go downstairs to row B, collumn 5 and grab a drinkable bottle of Cab or whatever the hell I'm in the mood for.

I intend on having an initial description field where I put notes on how it tasted when I sampled it. Then 3-10 years later when it's ready to drink, I'll grade it and then look at the initial notes to see what initial qualities made a great wine or made a poor wine or an average win, ect. . .

It's kind of a little research project that takes a lifetime to become good at.

Anyway, I really enjoy wine. I like that it's hard to find a really good bottle. I like that it gets you buzzed. I'll let you know how my wine cellar develops over the next few months and I'll fill you in on how my rehab goes if this ever gets out of hand :)

You can usually buy a wine journal at a wine store, along with clear sticky paper that allows you to transfer the label to the journal and then add notes, like so:

The wine Journel is OK, but if I have 50 bottles of wine some day, I want a better way to organize it than flipping through 50 pages.

If it's in excell, I can have the wine that is ready to drink become bold. Then I only have to sort through the bold options rather than having to sort through a whole book to figure out what is where.

It's really just a crude inventory management tool that I plan on using. I'm not good at Access, but if I was I'd make a database instead. Regardless, I'm proficient enough on excel to make a pretty handy little spreadsheet.

As each wine gets taken off the shelf, I can rate it and slide it to a different page where they get sorted according to their grade. Then I can use that information to help me pick out wines in the future.

I always come to these conversations late.

A few years back my doctor suggested I drink 4 oz. of a red wine a night. Supposedly...
***Raises high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol
***Lowers blood pressure
***Inhibits the formation of blood clots
****Helps prevent artery damage caused by high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the "bad" cholesterol
Who was I to argue?

I don't have a glass every night but I do when we have something open in the house which is maybe 1 or 2 a week.

I find that my easily-upset stomach handles wine MUCH better than beer. Go figure. I love beer...beer hates me.

I like reds anyway so that wasn't a problem. I like Shiraz and Cabernet. Merlot, Pinot Noir is OK.

I'm afraid I'm not very wine sophisticated. I just like to drink a glass by itself. Food gets in the way of the alcohol (just kidding).

I don't pare foods with wine...I'm just not that sophisticated. I drink what is open. I know that the right wine with the right food is suppose to enhance the dining experience but I guess my taste buds just aren't that developed...or else I killed them all in the 60s/70s.

I never really paid much attention to labels. I was under the impression that a label may have a good year followed by not such a good year so that if you don't keep track of the years along with the label it may not do you much good.

Question? What is the best way to store wine...red and white? How long can you keep it stored before it goes bad? We have had wines that tasted like vinegar when we have opened them up.

Keeping wine stored in a basement and on its side is the perferred method. Keep it out of the sunlight. Wine can go bad anytime its exposed to sunlight or if the cork gets to dry and cracks.

I just went to the wine store. I asked for something good and red; said I wasn't picky. Said I used to drink Merlot, I've recently enjoyed Cab and Pinot Noir. I said I wasn't picky, just something for 12-15 and something good.

She gave me a bottle of Red Zin. I must say, this is an excellent bottle of wine for the money. I think the key is say "something red" and leave it at that. Then they can just give you whatever's best rather than having to try to think of a good Merlot or good Pinot Noir, they can just give you what is hottest on their shelf.

It's worked out very well. This is a very good bottle of wine. Oooh, my wife's home soon. We can play scrabble.

Just bought two bottles of Corison Cabernet during the wootoff (it was a wootoff detour to wine.woot). I read a bunch of good things about it and the normal selling price for Corison Cab is $70 per bottle. I got two for the price of one. I almost always pay about $12 per bottle so this is obviously a significant jump at $31. I'm hoping there is a significant jump in quality, but there is only one way to find out. I've had some damn good $12 wine and although I really enjoy it, I can just sense that wine has more to offer than what I've already gotten. I'm hoping this is a step in that direction.

My all time favorite summer wine is a Vino Verde (Portugal). There are lots of good ones and a few bad ones but thankfully they are inexpensive enough to try an bunch and not break the bank.

I'm a sucker for a good Rose as well. Of course Alaska never really gets hot enough to really appreciate the "cooling" factor of these wines but there are ways to fake it.

Yes, I just made my first purchase last week. IT's two bottles of 2000 Corrison Cabernet ($62 after shipping). It's more than 50% off the normal price.

Although 2000 is said to be a down year for California Cabernet, I've heard very positive things about Corrison's and look forward to my first bottles of higher end wine (at a discounted price which makes it that much better).

I'll post a review here when I open a bottle. I've had probably 30 or 40 bottles of cheaper red wine. It will be interesting to compare those to a well regarded higher end red.

If you want to see some wine reviews that run the gamut of wine varieties go to:
http://revision3.com/winelibrarytv/

It's called Wine Library TV. The host is Gary Vaynerchuk. Saw him on what he called "The Thunder Show". He's definitely a little on the hyper side, but he reviews a ton of different wines regularly. He gives you ratings on wine from a variety of price points.

Caught him even doing reviews on boxed wine on YouTube:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=nHRukCIjbNU

If you're interested, give it a look!

Only minus is the team sticker he displays in the show (watch it and you'll see what I mean)

Last time I was at the Brett Favre Steak House, I noticed they sold wine with a 'Favre' label...........I looked at them, then thought 'I'm doing carry-on....can't do it'...........but was wondering....where is it bottled? Anyone know? And was it worth....I think, close to $20 bucks a bottle?

I've had that before. Well, there are a few different kinds, I only tried the Chardonnay. I want to say it was like $25 for the bottle. IMO, about $15 overpriced! I'd say it's bottled at the Boone's Farm winery.

Had to bump this thread back up.

I am starting my wine collection today. Buying about 3 bottles for myself (my wife's present for our anniversary today).

Looking for a variety of Sauv Blancs, misc. Reds, maybe even a Port.

I've tried some Little Penguin Merlots and Shirazes. Taste OK, but too much alcohol burn. I've had Kenwood Cab Sauv with some decent success.

Looking into Argentinian, New Zealand, Portuguese, South African and Chilean wines.

Drop me a PM if anyone has encountered something new recently.

Look for the Matua from NZ (Sauv Blanc), Vino Verda (Green Wine) from Portugal is always tasty...many wine houses make great examples of it and I can go one for countless hours on the wonders of Port. Start off with some LBVs (Late Bottled vintages) as well as a few Aussie Tawnys before diving into some vintage stuff. We should set up a tasting a few days before the posters game.

Whatever your tastes, never pay more than $7 a bottle. This is advice I got long ago from a friend who has GM of the Picasso Restaurant at the Bellagio on his resume.

You will end up drinking more crap but if that's' what floats your boat have at it. You can still find some deals at that price but in this "dollar as TP" age it is getting harder and harder to do.

That was maybe 5 years ago so you can inflate it, but it very much includes case price.

It's about 4 miles from my house. Never been there, the guy who owns it does those cheese carvings of Mt. Rushmore and has been on national TV a lot. Most of their wines (from their website) are different fruity wines like blackberry, cranberry, etc.)

What was so bad about it, just curious?

Bought a Sebeka 2007 Sauv Blanc $7 - South Africa (Western Cape) had it tonight for an anniversary dinner with my wife. BIG thumbs up.

Bought but haven't tried: Trapiche Malbec 2007 - Argentina (off of a friends recommendation); Rioja Cortijo 3 Tinto 2006. Malbec was under $7, the Rioja was around $8.

The best part.... my wife doesn't drink wine so I have it all to myself....

By coincidence, I tried a Jonesy Tawny Port at my local store today. Freakin' awesome! I never had a port before so I didn't know what to expect. Dark caramel brown color. Silky smooth but not heavy as I thought a dessert wine would be. I've tried ice wines before, but this comes close if not beating it.

As for the P-Rat wine tasting...if Mad can bring a bottle of Thunderbird  , I think some of our wine-inclined friends could sample a few.

I had a very nice St. Michel Chateau Riesling the other day. Light and not too sweet. Good summer wine.

Sandeman - Founders Reserve

R.L. Buller & Son -Victoria Tawny

Don Pedro Ximenez (PX) 1971 Gran Reserva. Its a Spanish desert wine that is a must taste. You can get a 375 ML bottle for about $25. A little spendy but what the fuck right?

That's a good question.....could be soon. I need to visit someone in Baltimore and may opt to do that in the next few weeks. I'll keep you posted....and thanks for asking. I owe you some recipes as well.

Never been a big wine drinker - except from my parent's boxed wine...

We went to a Brazilian BBQ last nite and had a nice pinot noir from CA. Huge meal, needed the wine to break it up.

Eating out in Beverly Hills usually shows you how hilarious rich foreigners really are (no offense). This one guy had a complete rainbow stripe getup.
Saw Bill Nye, 'the Science Guy'. Me and a buddy went up and said thanks for bringing science to tv when we were kids. Not much of a talker.

Last night I tried a new Pino Gregio... Sterling something, from CA. It was very good.

Ironically, there is a blog reviewing wines at Costco:

I heard that the Kirkland brand wines are pretty good as well.

Wish we had one closer to me. Closest one is in Milwaukee.

Picked up one of those wine aerators. Yeah, they really, really work. We did the blind taste test.

I've had a few of the Kirkland branded wines.....all were good and a Sauvignon blanc from New Zealand was amazing. It's gone from here but I'll find the label again and post it.

It was Ti Point...if you can still find it buy a few....very tasty.

I got one for my wife for New Years eve. You either have to have an aerator or open your bottle a good hour before serving.

No idea. I don't drink whites unless it is part of a wine pairing at a restaurant.
