Grossman agrees to one-year contract with Bears

INDIANAPOLIS – Some in his position might have looked at free agency as a ticket out of a town, as a chance to start over with a different team in a new city where the scrutiny isn’t as relentless.


Rex Grossman will return for his sixth season with the Bears in 2008.
But not quarterback Rex Grossman. On Saturday, the 2003 first-round draft pick agreed to a one-year contract with the Bears.

“I love the organization,” Grossman told ChicagoBears.com late last month. “They drafted me. A lot of bad things have happened to me since I’ve been here with injuries and things, but the 2006 season was a special one. We almost completed the ultimate goal. I want to finish that. I want to finish what I started and I want to be a Bear for the rest of my life.”

Grossman helped lead the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006 in his first full season as a starter, but he was heavily criticized for committing a rash of turnovers in a handful of poor outings.

The former Florida star was benched after starting the first three games in 2007, but he performed much better in five games after regaining the No. 1 job from Brian Griese.

Grossman passed for 913 yards with 3 touchdowns, 1 interception and an 80.2 passer rating in his second stint, a vast improvement after throwing for 500 yards with 1 TD, 6 interceptions and a 45.2 rating in the first three games.

Despite the scrutiny he has endured, Grossman didn’t seek a clean slate elsewhere.

“You can get a fresh start, but the Bears to me are a known commodity,” Grossman said in January. “You know what you’re going into. You know you’ve got a bunch of great teammates around you.

“The coaching staff knows what I can do more than any coaching staff. They know what my potential is. That’s always comforting when you know that the coaching staff knows exactly how good you can become and good you can be. There are a lot of good things about being a Bear.”

Addressing the media after the Bears season concluded, general manager Jerry Angelo and coach Lovie Smith both said they wanted Grossman to return, but also agreed that stabilizing the quarterback position remains a top priority.

“We would like to have Rex back in the mix,” Angelo said at the time. “Rex showed some good play, particularly when he was coming back off his little sabbatical. But again, we’ve got to get that stabilized. That’s got to be first and foremost.”

“Rex has won a lot of football games for us around here,” Smith added. “You look at how he played at the end of the football season until he came up with that injury, he is playing good football. We would like for him to come back again.”

Grossman is expected to compete for the starting job with Kyle Orton, who looked impressive in closing 2007 by leading the Bears to their only back-to-back wins of the season over the Packers and Saints.

“[Grossman] understands it,” Angelo said Thursday at the NFL Combine. “He’s talked to Lovie about it. I’ve talked to his agent about it. He’s fine with it. Obviously we want to get the best player under center. Kyle did some good things at the end. I think he deserves the right to compete at the position."

I don't see Leftwich being a good answer for da Bears, but I sure hope whoever they bring in is good at getting caught in embarrassing photo moments. Otherwise, I don't think he can compete with Wrex and Kyle...

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the one-year contract signed by Bears quarterback Rex Grossman today includes $1.5 million in guaranteed money.

Overall, Schefter reports, it's a one-year, $3 million contract, with half of that guaranteed and with another $2 million in incentives.

That ain't much $ for a starting QB, even one as poor as Wrecksy. I'm so glad to see him sign on with the Bears, he so retards their progress!

So Rex Grossman is coming back to Chicago for another season. That news must have inspired the Windy City's football faithful to toot their horns and whistle "Bear Down, Chicago Bears" as they drove up and down Lakeshore Drive.
Would someone please explain to me the Bears' fascination with this guy?
Since Chicago drafted Grossman with the 22nd overall pick in the 2003 draft, he has failed to live up to that status. He has been hurt, a lot. And when he has played, his performance generally has ranged from mediocre to miserable.
Yet, the Bears stubbornly continue to give him opportunity after opportunity. Their message seems to be: "He was a first-round draft pick and, by God, we're going to make it work."
So far, it hasn't. Just look at Grossman's numbers through five seasons.

Completion percentage: 54.3

Games missed because of injuries: 29 Last season was a microcosm of Grossman's NFL career. After he completed 47 of 89 passes (52.8 percent) for 500 yards, one touchdown and six interceptions in the first three games, the Bears benched him. He came back six games later after Brian Griese was injured and went 75-for-136 (55.1 percent) for 911 yards, three touchdowns and one interception before hurting his knee and missing the final three games.
I asked an NFL scout who knows the Bears well to describe Grossman's career in one or two words. He said, "Inconsistent. Erratic. Injured. I guess I went past two, huh? He's a strong-armed thrower. He's won some games for them with his ability to throw the ball deep down the field. But for every big play, he makes a bad play. I guess I wouldn't say I'm enamored with him."
Certainly there are Grossman supporters out there. And they will argue that in 2006 he took the Bears to the Super Bowl for the first time in 21 years.
I will argue that the Bears won the NFC championship in '06 in spite of Grossman, not because of him. And when he had a chance in the big dance to prove his skeptics wrong, he tripped up. In a 29-17 Super Bowl loss to Indianapolis, Grossman went 20-of-28 for 165 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions--one of which was returned for a touchdown.
Yes, Grossman has shown some flashes. But they have been overshadowed by his bad moments and inconsistency. Yet the Bears continue to show remarkable patience with him.
Admittedly, quarterback is not a strong position in the 2008 class of free agents. The group includes Mark Brunell, Cleo Lemon, J.T. O'Sullivan, Brian St. Pierre, Marques Tuiasosopo . . . well, you get the picture. So the Bears took a look at the available QBs and chose Grossman, keeping him off the market by signing him to a one-year contract.
"We wanted him because we felt like he gives us the best opportunity to be the best team we can be going into this next season," general manager Jerry Angelo told reporters. "We do know what other players are at the position out there. We did look at those players internally and we felt Rex was the best for us."
One reason the Bears wanted to re-sign Grossman is because he knows their offensive system. But knowing it and executing it are two different things.
The Bears didn't give Grossman a big contract and he's not guaranteed to be the starter in 2008. He'll compete for that role with Kyle Orton, a fourth-round pick in 2005, who started the final three games last season. The team likely will release Griese and draft a quarterback somewhere in the middle rounds.
So maybe this is just a stopgap move that will buy Chicago a year before it can land a better quarterback. But to win a championship, you need a great quarterback, not a mediocre one. And if I'm a Bears fan, I don't have really high expectations for 2008.
