Packers LS Rob Davis announced his retirement from football.

The team appointed him Director of Player Development. Davis was the Packers' long snapper for 11 seasons. He ranks third in franchise history for games played behind Forrest Gregg and a certain surefire Hall of Fame QB.

Yeah, but has he officially filed the papers?

Now Shadow, you know that isn't true. They are all high school graduates, and I don't think any are so smart as to have gotten out at 11!

Yea, but that's a 'Ray Rhodes' scholar, which only requires being able to chew gum while the team falls apart.

I'm pleased this has happened. I was hoping last year already they would find a position player who could long snap, thereby freeing up a roster spot. Davis's long snapping seemed to deteriorate a little bit last year, and his blocking up the middle also seemed deficient sometimes.

Hopefully, we can find or train a position player to do the job decently.

I believe they've already signed a specialist. I know nothing about the guy other than he has LS after his name on the roster. There may be a few multi-taskers out there, but for the most part the designated long snapper position seems here to stay.

Who wants to bet that our new Director of Player Development will spend a lot of time working with the new long snapper?

I'm glad he's staying with the team. Who the hell really knows, but from stuff you read, he's a great locker room guy and has acted as a go-between with players and coaches.

Any Ray-Ray ref is good for a laugh.

The guy is all football, but man, what a shitty HC he was for us.

I figured Davis was done. He had trouble snapping (Chicago?), blocking, running the field, and tackling last season. Don't matter how good a guy you are with those performance issues.

I just read McGinn's chat. Because he's still with the Packers with a new staff job, he could easily come out of retirement in mid season if the new long snapper stinks it up. So he's not technically taking up a roster spot, but he's still with the team. Pretty shrewd move.

True. And he's also available to train his replacement.

Actually, I think he can sign mid-season with any team EXCEPT the Packers. I believe anyone employed by a team other than under a standard player contract can not sign a player contract with the same team in the same season.

Makes sense, because otherwise a team could sign backup players as groundskeepers, waterboys, etc. and roster size limitations would be meaningless.

Well then, that's the last time I believe Bob McGinn!

Welcome to a whole new world boys.

The Champs are gone.

Wow, this team looks soooo different now.

How weird is it going to look when DD and Harris go?

Since he's still associated with the team in a front office capacity, that means I don't have to replace my #60 Rob Davis jersey, right?
