According to an Associated Press release, Wisconsin leads the country in reports of drivers driving under the influence in the past year. In fact, the Upper Midwest has the worst drunken driving rates in the country.

Utah was the lowest.

Here are the rates of drivers who report driving under the influence in the past year:

Wisconsin 26.4%
North Dakota 24.9%
Minnesota 23.5%
Nebraska 22.9%
South Dakota 21.6%

Pacific Northwest
Oregon 15.9%
Washington 13.8%

Utah less than 10%

Any theories why the Upper Midwest ranks so high?

Nothing much else to do in the winter?

Could just be that we're way more honest than other parts of the country.

Rich German ancestry, which is why Milwaukee is the beer capitol of America and also why we rate highest in terms of drunk driving. What can I say... us Germans love to drink.

As rich in Irish ancestry as the New England area is, I wonder why THEY aren't right up there with us...

We're more honest?

North Dakota should be tops. There's nothing to hit--even if you are drunk.

Anybody know the difference between a drunk and an alcoholic?

Alcoholics go to meetings.
