PACK TO IMPLODE IN 2006?
As if the Green Bay Packers' 4-12 season in 2005 wasn't bad enough, the first year under new coach Mike McCarthy is showing early signs of being a potential train wreck.
The evidence? At a time when the team should be getting up to speed on the new systems that the new staff is putting into place, far too many players who'll be expected to contribute when the season begins are still nowhere to be found.
And McCarthy is coming off like a guy with no juice, telling the media that he doesn't know when guys like cornerback Al Harris, cornerback Charles Woodson, receiver Rod Gardner, and defensive tackle Ryan Pickett will show up for OTAs that run through June 21.
Harris isn't with the team because he's unhappy with his contract -- a fact that prompted McCarthy to take out some of his frustrations recently on Jason Wilde of the Winsconsin State Journal, who had the audacity to, you know, report the reason for Harris' absence.
But Harris is a guy who pre-dates the regime of McCarthy and G.M. Ted Thompson; Woodson and Pickett are guys that Mike and Ted added this offseason.
As one league insider has explained, the absence of Woodson and Pickett is further proof as to why both have been deemed underachievers during their NFL careers. "They've have never played up to all the hype, and then they go to a new team and are still pieces of sh-t off and on the field," said the source.
We've previously opined that the Pack are capable of winning the NFC North in 2006, and that their effort in 2005 wasn't as pathetic as their 4-12 record would indicate. But given that NFL teams put in 90 percent of the offense and defense during offseason workouts, we're starting to develop real concerns that the Pack will struggle come September.
What do you all think?

Well, it looks to me like they've pretty well covered all their bases.

profootballtalk.com is OK in some respects but in my obsevation not down on "the Packers" .
That anti-Favre editor from that site is all Blawww Blawww Blawww whenever it comes to OUR team.
The OTA'a are V-O-L-U-N-T-A-R-Y.
Then again, I would hope after us going 4-12 last Season that Free Agents and errrrr, talents like Woodson and Pickett might make some effort to make their faces known. Afterall they have a new "D" to learn or did these guys max out on the Wonderlik or maybe like Al Harris, they arn't satisfied with their contracts and . . . well . . . shit !

I don't follow other teams' OTA's but I would expect that they are having about the same turnout. If I'm wrong somebody let me know.
Would I rather that everyone be at every practice? Yes
Am I worried that our season will be ruined because they are not? No

Because of this news, I will now change my guess on this year's record from 12-4 to 1-15!!!

Implode?? How does it get any worse?? I've said in another thread six wins will be the most they get, but I'd say that's improving on the 4-12 train wreck last year. I think the word for this season is STABILIZE. Stop the bleeding, teach the new system to players and just get through the year.

I believe I may have said this before, but it bears repeating if I have. PFT can bite me.

I believe you hit the nail on the head there, havanother.
If the Packers split their games this Season I will be estatic. I have them going 7-9, but to be truly honest, every win I see this Season will be awesome.
The reason for my pessimism lies in OUR further depleted with experience OL . Now to that, add key players coming off bad injuries (esp. Ahman Green), the loss of a legitimate #1 WR, a coaching staff overhaul - with little experience in winning in the NFL at key positions within that staff, the loss to OUR "D" of 'the spit and fire' of Jim Bates, a new zone blocking system for the "O" to learn and too many players on one year contracts.
It could go on and on, but I'll stop there.
The Packers are at least 4-6 more Seasons away from being a serious contender. On the plus side we have still one of the most exciting, most competitive players in the NFL committed to "just - one more season? We get to enjoy Favre's run at Dan Marino's TD record and deal with all the whiplash we'll feel on that chase, as the media weighs in.
Further I was encouraged to hear FB William Henderson's positive assessment of Aaron Rodgers progress in this years mini camps compared to last season. I love that we drafted Hawk and Hodge and I have hope the Greg Jennings may produce for us this Season.
Baby steps and still Favre!

Wood, all of your concessions are half empty. What would you post if you were the Packers PR guy, had the very same facts, but needed tp post an optimistic outlook? What does half full look like?

Also, they can lick my butt and suck on my balls. Never anything worth dick over there, and if it is, it's because its from somewhere else.
Also, as an aside, the WiStateJomofos can put dynmite up their collective ass and light the fuse - the shorter the better (the fuse that is).
Also, murphy is MIA isn't he? Has he fallen off the wagon and gone on a week long porn bender? Maybe PFT can run a story about hoe he's unhappy with his current deal and is holding out until PR shows signs of being committed to a championship.

I thought that this time of the year was for the coaches to evaluate the talent of the players who may or may not make the team. Veteran Starters on the field just get the way of that right?

O.T.A'S are management's way of saying "It's not mandatory, but you better be here or else." The players have a union, and they do not have to attend to earn their paycheck. I't a touchy issue with no real solution, so let's kick back and wait for the pre-season, to see where this team has improved, if at all.

implosion implies that something was previously inflated...
at the end of last season, the packers were pretty much out of air. so no, the packers will not implode in 06.
but the bears just might

I think it was SHamrock who did sime research and found numbers that said Packer OTA attendance is above average. I know I saw it in here some where.

If you read the article, it's from 2006. I was searching for Greg Jennings articles last year, and found that gem. We didn't exactly implode in 2006.
