OTA's open to the public. 5/21 - 5/29 - 6/1

I have to be home on Wednesday anyhow because I'm having a TV delivered, so my plan is to go over and check out practice. I think at that time, reality might set in that Brett really isn't coming back. :cry:

So, I go over the Ray Nitschke field (behind the Don Hutson Center) and there are cars in the parking lot there, but nobody on the practice field. Looked around and found out that M3 was holding the practice indoors. This really ticked me off because very few of these are open to the public as it is and this was supposed to be one of them. Well, then as I was walking by a guy standing by the door asked if I wanted to come in. They let about 50 people inside the watch the practice.

I'm officially excited about football now. But, gosh...it was so weird not seeing #4 out there.

Here is a shot from inside the Don Hutson center. It was cool because I've never been inside there before. It's off limits to the public.

What they did today was really different than training camp. No pads, no contact, just running little drills with each position.

Driver was having fun with the crowd, as usual making people laugh. Noah Herron was standing 5 feet from me and was letting out the loudest belches.

I'm not a big draft guru at all, but I've seen many comments where people say Jordy Nelson is kinda slow. Personally, I thought he was lightening fast out there today. I'm really excited about this guy.

We could only stay inside for like 20-25 minutes, so I didn't get to see the whole practice.

GREAT pictures! Thanks...

McCarthy :

all the practices will be indoors. no grass practices until training camp.

Harrell could practice sooner rather than later, but they're being cautious because of only 13 lineman on the roster. He had minor back surgery based on something that was found after the season.

Talked with Will Blackmon about his string of injuries.

Aaron Rodgers has always had a good arm, but he is throwing with more velocity.

Coston is working at center. Barbre is most athletic of an athletic group.

Brohm is someone you don't need to repeat things twice with.

Allen Barbre opened practice as the starting left guard, although Daryn Colledge got some reps with the first team as well.

"Allen is in competition for one of the inside spots," McCarthy said. "We're continuing to play different combinations. You'll probably see Daryn Colledge at different positions. Junius Coston will play more center."

Aaron Rodgers’ public unveiling as the Green Bay Packers’ new starting quarterback took place in the Don Hutson Center on Wednesday, where the team held its first open session of organized team activities.
The practice was supposed to be held outdoors and be open to the public. Instead, even on a sunny though breezy day, practice was held inside — in which case, practice is generally closed to the public — but the team let fans inside along a portion of the east sideline.

As for Rodgers? Well, there’s not much that can be gleaned out of a workout with shorts. He didn’t throw any passes against the Packers’ starting defense, though he did riddle a defense made up of whatever offensive players weren’t running a play at the moment.

He did, however, show a live arm, especially compared to rookie seventh-round pick Matt Flynn.

No. 1 defense

Speaking of the starting defense, most of the Packers’ No. 1 unit was there, though veteran cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson were absent from the voluntary workout. They were replaced by Tramon Williams and rookie Pat Lee.

“We have communication with both of them,” coach Mike McCarthy said after practice. “Where they are in the years, their work in the OTAs will be limited, but they’ll get their work in."

No Grant, either

Also absent — at least during drills — was unsigned star running back Ryan Grant. While Grant was seen at the practice facility, Brandon Jackson, DeShawn Wynn, Vernand Morency and Noah Herron handled most of the reps at halfback.

“It’s obviously a business decision,” McCarthy said of Grant being limited to conditioning work.

Harrell absent, too

As was reported Tuesday, defensive tackle Justin Harrell will not participate at these OTAs because of a back problem. After practice, McCarthy explained further by saying Harrell had minor back surgery.

“He’s fine. He’s doing well,” McCarthy said. “He can probably be back sooner rather than later. Anytime a young player misses time, it’s not to his benefit. But he’ll be fine. We’re probably being more cautious with” the roster limited to 80 players this year.

Weather or not ...

McCarthy said all OTA sessions would be held inside to provide a “constant” environment. That’s bad news for railbirds, with limited space inside the Don Hutson

TE Jermichael Finley was immediately in the role of the second tight end with the first team. But it's not like the Packers have any other choice. Finley looked to know what he was doing. Seemed comfortable and caught the ball well

The first two offensive lines were: LT Chad Clifton, LG Allen Barbre, C Scott Wells, RG Jason Spitz, RT Mark Tauscher, and LT Orrin Thompson, LG Daryn Colledge, C Junius Coston, RG Josh Sitton, RT Tony Moll;

The starting cornerbacks without Al Harris and Charles Woodson were Jarrett Bush and Tramon Williams, with Patrick Lee playing the slot in nickel. Williams had an outstanding practice. He was everywhere and knocked down at least three passes;

RB DeShawn Wynn barely participated and appeared to be in so-so shape. But then again, that was the case last year and McCarthy said Wynn was fine;

The quarterbacks, for the most part, looked pretty sharp, especially Aaron Rodgers. Brian Brohm fumbled his first snap in team drills, recovered to throw a duck deep down the right sideline, and then Jordy Nelson jumped over Lee to make a great catch;

DE Jeremy Thompson had a rough time against fellow rookie Breno Giacomini in one-on-one drills. Thompson had a tough time getting off the ground;

The starting linebackers were MLB Nick Barnett, WLB A.J. Hawk and SLB Brady Poppinga. The backups were MLB Desmond Bishop, WLB Tracy White and SLB Brandon Chillar;

More quick hits from the first of four open OTA practices ...

* Fifth-round draft pick Breno Giacomini held his own during one-on-one pass rushing drills. Three times, fourth-rounder Jeremy Thompson ended up on the ground when going against Giacomini, who said coaches made significant adjustments to his technique during rookie orientation camp in an effort to get him playing lower and with better leverage. "I just keep taking it all in," Giacomini said. "As much coaching as I can -- not only with Coach Campen, but with (Jason) Spitz and the rest of the o-line and all these guys. They don't have to say nothing, but just watching them is a huge advantage for me."

* Jordy Nelson made his second impressive catch in as many open practices this month. Running a go route along the right sideline, Nelson slowed to adjust to a floater from Brian Brohm -- who had fumbled the snap -- established position and elevated over Pat Lee to make the grab. The play earned a flying chest bump from veteran receiver Donald Driver.

* The 10 players expected to sit out with injuries all did: DTs Justin Harrell (back), Johnny Jolly (shoulder), Daniel Muir (pectoral muscle) and Colin Cole (forearm), CB Will Blackmon (foot), LB Abdul Hodge (knees), FB John Kuhn (groin), OL Cameron Stephenson (calf), TE Tory Humphrey (ankle) and DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (knee). Only Harrell, Jolly and Blackmon have been ruled out for all of OTAs.

* The interior defensive line was short-handed enough that starting end Cullen Jenkins worked mostly at defensive tackle alongside Ryan Pickett. Michael Montgomery filled Jenkins' spot at right end.

* Hodge, who missed all of last season after having surgery on both knees, expects to be cleared next week.

* Second-year CB Tramon Williams was in on three pass break-ups.

* The Aaron Rodgers-led No. 1 offense had two false starts in a three-play span during a team (11-on-11 period). Overall, though, Rodgers seemed sharp.

* OL Tony Moll got up slowly after someone rolled onto the back of his legs on a Brandon Jackson run during a team period. Moll limped off but seemed OK.

* LB Brady Poppinga nearly intercepted Rodgers during the 7-on-7 passing drill.

* There were no fumbles during ball-security drills.

* And your mostly meaningless passing statistics (7-on-7 in parentheses; excludes initial team run period): Rodgers 14-for-20 (5-for-8), Brohm 10-for-13 (5-for-6), Matt Flynn 4-for-6 (2-for-4).

Barbre Tabbed As Starter

packeraaron in Go Pack Go

It looks like the Packers are not kidding around when they say that improvement at the guard position will come from within. Second year player Alan Barbre was the starter at left guard at the opening of today’s practice, taking Daryn Colledge’s place from last year (though Colledge saw work at his old spot as well).

I’m excited to see what Barbre can bring to the table, though it’s hard to get a read on anything when your offensive linemen aren’t in pads. Add to that, the company line during camp last year was that Barbre excelled at pass protection, and then he promptly looked horrific in pass pro in the pre-season.

A lot has happened since then, and of course the coaching staff knows a million times more than we do. The comfort is that he can’t really be any more of a blunder in pass pro than Colledge was at the most inopportune times last season… (For reference, please see: Chiefs Game vs. Boone, Alphonso or Entire Game vs. Cowboys)

Ya, there have been a lot of "chicken leg" athletes who have done real well, they just look funny when they are all muscled, but bony legs.

The Packers had an OT years back, I think it might have been Francis Peay, that several writers commented on. They said to look at him from the waist up you knew he was a lineman, but from the waist done he looked like a WR or DB!

Reminds me a little of Mox in "Varsity Blues" (hair's a little lighter though).

ok - I'm confused...who got into the Hudson Center? GBRulz? Motife? Or are you married, and were both there :shock:

Regardless, I could care less. GREAT bunch of shots!

Colledge seems to have the right attitude also.

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=753720

"That's fine. It's good for us, good for the team, keeps me on my toes," said Colledge. "This is definitely not my job to have. I am not a (Mark) Tauscher or (Chad) Clifton or (Scott) Wells yet. But I'm trying to get to that point. Hopefully we can push each other to that kind of success. But for right now we'll share the reps and work hard."

Colledge hopes the off-season work in the weight room will help him well into training camp.

"I felt like I worked harder in the weight room this year. I felt like I got stronger," said Colledge. "The last two years, you're just so worried about what you're doing and learning and scheme. This year I felt like I didn't need that. I know the plays. I know what we're doing. I felt like what I needed was to get stronger and to get faster."

the first set are all "links" to JSO with an IMG boundary on the link, so they are getting their "clicks" whenever this post is opened and should be happy.

The second set is from GBPG although I notice the Brandon Chillar photo is almost identical to the JSO image.

You don't wear a liquid on your head...it is "do" rag..as in hair do. Or "doo" rag.

Is there a such thing as a guy that isn't? I feel like most of the guys around here love to jump into the fray with some "matter of factly" ownage.

I loved all those videos!

I can't help but wonder though...is this sort of stuff the reason more practices are closed to the public? I mean, they have to know anything they allow people to come and see is going to be an open book to whoever wants to have a look.

no it's not. a dew-rag is something black folks wear which tie in the back in order to keep/maintain/develop their "wave" ... requirement during sleep or that shit just ain't gonna look right in the morning.

aaron rodgers, definitely, most definitely, is not wearing a dew rag ... they are made (intentionally and for a specific purpose) with entirely different materials.

comments:

1. im turning into an aaron rodgers fan boy. keep the hair, we need the personality... he looks like all my old cali stoner buddies. im all about it.

2. gb you rock.. great thread, great pics, thanks a lot!

3. barbre... he's gonna be the man this year.

4. jordy is gonna catch 40 balls...

5. the texas tight end will get some decent time, catch a couple clutch first downs and end up with 25 catches and a lot of excited rats...

i cant wait for this season tbh!

He an another guy were wearing the number. Maybe some sort of subliminal message to Favre? :)

Speaking of socks, I don't know what was up with Noah Herron wearing one white sock. I guess he has to stand out some way.

Watch #6 try to catch the ball.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhWo6dhbCoI

I acctually noticed that too. I noticed a couple things that seemed different from practices in the past in regard to the WR's.

1. There are almost no drops - in past years there were a lot more (see Robert Ferguson, Andre Thurman and Javon Walker *before lasic*)

2. Of the passes that were dropped, 90% of them seemed to be by #6 with short dreads.

Rodgers is very fortunate in that he has 5 or 6 guys who can all catch the ball and at least 4 of them are physical specimens that can get open on just about any DB. While we're at it, all of the QB's seem very accurate too. These are some pretty smooth practices for having two rookie QB's.
