woodbuck27: The second leading story in Canadian news this morning, Mon. 28 July, 2008:

Canadian troops killed two children after car neared convoy in Afghanistan

By: The Canadian Press

KABUL, Afghanistan - Canadian troops have killed two young children by opening fire on a car that they feared was about to attack their convoy.

NATO said in a statement issued Monday that the troops opened fire on the car in Kandahar province after its driver ignored repeated signals to keep its distance.

Sources at the local hospital said a boy and his sister had been killed, and their parents had received medical attention.

Afghan and United Nations officials have pleaded with international troops to avoid civilian casualties - which threaten to undermine support for the government and foreign forces.

The organization Human Rights Watch says at least 300 Afghan civilians were mistakenly killed by the coalition last year, and thousands are believed to have died since 2001.

NATO commanders insist they take all reasonable precautions and blame militants for endangering innocents.

Militants regularly use civilian cars loaded with explosives in suicide missions against Afghan and foreign troops.

And am I correct in assuming you blame the troops? Instead of the insidious damned terrorists who so often do employ those tactics and make the prudent normal reaction by good normal people--the Canadian troops--sometimes dangerous to innocents?

Why even bring this crap up?
