Packers Team Report
6/9/2006

PERSONNEL ANALYSIS: QB Brett Favre has committed himself to sticking around for all of the team's organized team activities (OTA's) because he is learning a new system. Many of the plays are the same, but the formations vary and the words to describe each play are vastly different than the system he was under the past six seasons. As a result, Favre is struggling with calling the play in the huddle and getting everyone in the proper positions. Once the ball is snapped there isn't a problem because coach Mike McCarthy is running a basic West Coast offense. Favre isn't engaging in the same rigorous off-season conditioning program he undertook a year ago, but he is trying to maintain the gains he made through those workouts. At this point, his arm is nowhere near peak condition and his volume of throws is being limited. . . .

With RBs Ahman Green (thigh) and Najeh Davenport (ankle) sidelined, Samkon Gado is making his pitch to be the top running back. The newcomers on the coaching staff don't know much about him, so he has to re-establish himself in a new system. Right now, Gado is thinking too much in a zone system based mostly on reaction. The idea is to feel the opening and then explode through it. Gado is trying too hard to analyze where the hole is and when he should commit to it. Because of his explosiveness he should be a natural for the system, but he must think less and react more to be successful.

SCOUTING REPORT: QB Aaron Rodgers is starting to fill out physically, and it's noticeable in the strength of his throws. He has shown excellent deep ball accuracy in recent workouts and is putting decent zip on his balls over the middle and to the sideline. Rodgers has a fairly quick release and throws a nice spiral. His ability to throw on the run or outside of the pocket still is a question mark. He has enough athletic ability to avoid the rush, but he must show he can make plays under duress. Until the pads come on in July, it will be hard to tell whether he has made significant gains in that area.

INSIDE DISH: For a team with a no-nonsense coach like Mike McCarthy, it's an embarrassment for the Packers to have veterans like CB Al Harris, CB Charles Woodson and DT Ryan Pickett miss all of the voluntary offseason workouts. The club signed Woodson and Pickett to big free-agent deals, and neither has attended a single OTA.

GUARDS/CENTERS ANALYSIS: D-minus. Two years ago this team had one of the strongest interiors in the NFL, and now it's in a total rebuilding stage.

I think Al Harris is just making himself look foolish, not the team.

Woodson & Pickett are head scratchers. Don't know what to make of it, but I don't think less of the coaches because of it.

In the present day corporate NFL, the players who toe the union line and do the absolute minimum to gain their paychecks in disregard of the best interests of winning for whichever organization they represent, frequently represent losing organizations.

The difference is in the leadership at the top. Strong motivators who demand, earn and deserve respect from these players become the winners. Coaches who need to lean on the letter of the collective bargaining law to instill discipline in their team are losers. There needs to be a bond built through respect and leadership which motivates players to come together with their teammates and coaching staffs for participation in all team functions, both mandatory and voluntary.

In short, I DO place a great deal of blame on the coaching staff for the non-participation by players in the voluntary OTA's. Leadership is not built through enforcing written rules and guidelines on your charges, if that were true, anyone who is given that position could do it equally as well as anyone else. The ability to influence without absolute authority is a good working definition of leadership. I would like to see more of that from MM as he begins his stint as GBP HC.

We haven't gotten the reason they've missed this. To me, it sounds like Woodson had a trip scheduled to Europe. I know McCarthy is doing these OTAs a little different than most, so maybe these guys had scheduled other things. It's hard to rip them to bad until hearing why they may have missed these things.

It is true that Charles Woodson is still in Europe. I just saw on CNN International that he is in Paris. Apparently he is stuck on the 16 lane round-about on Champs Elysées near the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile.

Contacted on his cell phone Woodson stated, "I thought the traffic in the Bay Area was sick; driving in Paris is more complicated than navigating my way through Coach Sanders' new playbook! By the way, can somebody find out if I left my playbook at the Louvre? I haven't seen that damn thing since the DaVinci Code tour last week!!"

According to reports this morning, Woodson has managed to move three lanes further to the outside of the infamous round-about. It is uncertain if he will make it out in time for the remaining OTAs, but authorities are convinced he will find his way back to the Charles de Gaulle International Airport in time for the Packers' training camp in late July.
