2008, 2009, 2010 - He can earn performance bonuses paid the next year
$500,000 added to his base salary the next year if he gets 1000 yards rushing.
$1.5 million for 1,250 rushing yards
$2.5 million 1,500 yards or more

Additional incentives:
$150,000 for being in the top 10 in the NFC in rushing in any year
$500,000 for being in the top 5 in the NFC
$250,000 for making the Pro Bowl.

$4 million at the end of 2011 if in the four years of the deal he rushes for 4,100 or more yards
$2 million for 3,600 and 4,099 yards

Complex contract, but very much performance based. No dead money carryover if he is not with the team. I really like this type of contract, especially in this situation.

Incentive based is my preference as well, especially in the NFL. In my opinion it doesn't work as well in baseball. Too many guys swinging for the fences when the situation calls for a sac bunt or a groundball to the right side to move a runner. Can cause a clubhouse full of guys worried more about me than we. In football I see less of a downside to a guy motivated to earn that extra yard to reach an incentive or to show up to offseason programs to cash in those incentives.

Wowzers, higher than I thought. The good thing is, the bulk of the bonuses are roster based this year and next. It ramps up nicely for Grant in 10 and 11.

Nice to see there aren't any long term effects if he stinks up the joint, but I also think it's quite a lot of money in the first two years - he can get near $9million in the first two years before any performance bonuses.

I'm also surprised at the length. I was expecting 5yrs. What did Grant really give up here?

I guess the difference is whether Grant is dressed out or not (such as injured, but not put on IR) and that the salary check for the bye week won't have a roster bonus.

Will the four-year clauses be void if Grant is not on the roster in 2011? Will they kick in if he reaches them before that season ends?

The Packers have used the weekly roster bonuses on a number of players the last few years. I believe the first was with Woodson, and it seems to have become almost a standard part of their contracts now. The player earns 1/16 of the bonus every time he is on the 45-man game day active roster.

From the summary, the four year bonuses seem to have two components; he has to be with the team at the time and has to have achieved the yardage required. It is an interesting question.

I thought I would bump this once, after it was buried deeply by all the Favre related threads.

Kind of an unusual contract. 4 years, close to 35 million possible; but the Packers can release him at anytime with no apparent cap impact beyond that year. It would be nice if this turns out to be the new format for NFL contracts, but I doubt that it will.

Any year the Packers don't think Grant will be worth at least $4-5 million, they can simply release him.
