Report: Springsteen to perform at Super Bowl
Boss would be latest in string of aging rockers to play at NFL title game

Tampa Bay Online
updated 9:17 a.m. CT, Tues., Aug. 12, 2008
TAMPA, Fla. - The Super Bowl might be six months away from coming to town, but the celebrity rumors already are running rampant.

The New York Post's Page Six reported on Tuesday that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will perform live at the Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 1 at Raymond James Stadium.

Amanda Holt, the director of communications for the local Super Bowl Committee, said this is the first she has heard of it.

Brian Walker, senior communications director for NBC Sports, e-mailed us from the Olympics in China and told us to contact the NFL.

And Brian McCarthy, head of communications for the NFL, responded with a terse e-mail: "No, I cannot confirm this."

Asked to clarify whether that means Springsteen is definitely not performing, McCarthy responded: "We do not comment on our pregame or halftime show plans until we announce the talent. I would have said the same thing to the New York Post if someone from there would have called before it ran the item."

Choosing Springsteen would make sense. Since 2004, when Janet Jackson exposed us to a bit more of herself than many (including the Federal Communications Commission) would have liked, the halftime entertainment has been a list of safe, aging rockers: Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

And now, maybe Springsteen.

I turned off the Rolling Stones, as well, but Prince took the cake in terms of unbearable halftime performances.

We have Timberlake and Janet to thank for this recent run of old fogies playing the SB.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Bruce, but he is a safe choice. They need to cater to the market their advertisers are targeting most often. So, not a surprising choice.

To me Justin/Janet *was* a surprise.

what an exciting choice. :|

I guess I can't think of a better artist than Springsteen if the goal is to offend the least number of people. And he is very good. But I liked the choice of Prince, at least that was slightly interesting musically. The only problem with Prince is some people don't like him .

I'd rather see Santana than Springsteen, if they are going for geezer rock.

How about The Roots? They are hip hop band that old white guys like me can stand.

the idea of the halftime entertainment is to keep the crowd pumped up and excited...not to put them into a stupor.

85 minute halftime? Not awesome. The Rolling Stones were awful on stage and every halftime since then was a yawn fest. Last year I switched to Animal Planet to watch the puppies.

they haven't done that in years. Not since the touring with fishbone days.

First off, I almost choked on my ice cream reading that one. Great stuff there Leaper.

Bruce is way better than that Tom Petty disaster last year. He'll actually keep the crowd awake and not need the words to his songs shown on a big screen so the crowd can follow along.

Feel sorry for those who didn't like Prince. That man is one of the best guitarists you'll see.

As for the under 60 non-cock waving performers, I'd be willing to bet that Daughtry is going to play the halftime show in the next year or two.

Agreed. I hope the Boss plays his old stuff: Badlands, Born To Run, Rosalita, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, etc.

I liked Prince. Better than most of the performers.
