A PUNTER??

I thought that Ryan was kicking OK, or am I missing something?? (definitely was the leading rusher vs. the Titans  )

Should change the thread title to "reportedly".

This move makes no sense and is utterly unsourced at this point.

That blogpost states several teams wanted to try him out after being released.

The Packers signed him without a tryout.

Still kind of confusing why? They must see something in him that:
a) the Redskins didn't?
b) makes him a better choice than Ryan

Could be a kicking tryout vs Ryan?

:?:

Interesting to see how this plays out. They must think Ryan is topped out and just prone to fub it occasionally. Is this the punter the Redskins had last year against us?

I'm sure its to the practice squad. Ryan had a solid preseason outside of game 1. You don't just cut a good guy like that. Plus... emergency running back! He's versatile!

this makes no sense. why would they bring in a punter this late to compete.

J. Ryan looked good in preseason besides one gaffed punt... Maybe hes a good holder or he could play DT?

He doesn't know the system dammit, you can't just bring in a guy this late and expect him to know the punting team....j/k.

If TT thinks he is a better punter than ryan this makes sense...no matter how good he thinks ryan is. We try to field the best 53 we can.

I will stop being a fan of the Packers if they get rid of Jon Ryan.

Ryan keeps kicking it into the endzone instead of the coffin corner. Ryan has a big leg but he can't drop it inside the 20 very well.

A guy with less leg that can put it our at the 14 yard line is more valuable than a big leg that gives the other team the ball on the 20.

It looks like its official.

I thought Ryan was a great punter and had only an upside. Didnt he boot a 70 yarder in pre-season? In the Air!?

This doesnt make sense. Plus everything I ever heard about the guy was that he was a positive addition to the locker room.

Maybe he slept with the wrong persons daughter!

Only thing is I like Ruvell as an athlete and a person. Ryan was a great guy, great personality. The Ryan for MVP video was hilarious. Just wish the guy had more talent and consistency.

If Ruvell was cut (BIG if) I'd probably sit in the dark for a few days, but I'd come out of it. :D

PACKERS BOOT RYAN
Posted by Mike Florio on September 1, 2008, 4:16 p.m.
The Green Bay Packers have announced that they’ve parted ways with punter Jon Ryan.

Ryan joined the team as an undrafted free agent in 2006. He went to college in Canada.

He generated an average of 44.5 yards per punt in two NFL seasons. His net average is 37.0.

Replacing Ryan is Derrick Frost, who spent the last three seasons with the Redskins. Before that, he punted for the Browns.

His career average is 41.1 yards, and his net is 36.4.

But Frost has done a better job of pinning opponents’ inside the 20 than Ryan. Over the last two years, Frost has done it 50 times in 156 punts. Ryan did it only 35 times in 135 punts.

Pretty surprised by this move

He's only 7% better at placing it inside the 20's. Ryan's a young guy. I'm not crazy about this move, but I recognize that its a punter and ultimately won't make a huge difference.

the inside the 20 numbers are really worthless to me

you really have to know where the guys were kicking from too

if both guys take the same amount of kicks, and one kicks from the 50 and one kicks from the 40, then one of them should have a higher inside the 40 number

can we find a stat for average punting position? this is where it would be nice to still have patler around

that's pretty obvious.

but who? what does the 40 and 50 have to do with anything? you saying the guy kicking from the 50, out of 20 kicks, will always have more inside the 20?

not always, but he should have a better chance of getting more in

That's very true. Way too many variables. 7% isn't enough to whip me in a frenzy anyway. That's like two punts a year.
