From PFT:

Though a partially torn MCL reportedly will keep Titans quarterback Vince Young off the field for the next two-to-four weeks, an incident that occurred not long before the injury could be the thing that truncates his career in Tennessee.

According to David Climer of the Tennesseean, Young apparently attempted to take himself out of the game after throwing an interception in the fourth quarter. Young supposedly tried to blame his reluctance to return on a tightening hamstring, even though he sought no treatment for it while the defense was on the field.

“I came on the field and 10 wasn’t in the huddle,” center Kevin Mawae said of the incident. “I didn’t know what the situation was.”

Per Climer, Young returned only after prodding from an animated Jeff Fisher. “From the outside looking in,” Climer writes, ”Fisher seemed to all but throw Young back onto the field.”

Though Young was named the offensive rookie of the year in 2006, his regression last season has caused us to conclude that the jury is still out on whether he’s a bust. Based on today’s events, it’s looking more likely than ever that Young will never fulfill his potential.

And, hopefully once and for all, Young’s career will get NFL teams to quit building up and/or tearing down college players based on their performances in a bowl game.

Add this on top of the fact that Young has considered retirement in the past and it doesn't look encouraging for the Titans.

Exactly. What a pussy. He needs to announce his retirement tomorrow so the Titans can pay millions to a guy that actually wants to play and is passionate for the game.

Per the AP, this story may not be as dramatic as that one reporter made it out to be.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Vince Young was on crutches Sunday after spraining his left knee late in the Titans' 17-10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher said his quarterback will have tests to determine the severity of the injury, but added that Young's knee eased up in the locker room.

"The biggest concern that I have right now, not knowing, I don't think it is serious about Vince," Fisher said. "We are going to do some studies, some tests on his knee."

Young iced his knee and apparently was good enough early that team officials said they thought he could talk to reporters. But he was moving very gingerly while trying to get dressed with crutches at his locker and left without talking to reporters.

He was hurt on a bootleg when Jaguars linebacker Daryl Smith collided with his left leg a couple plays after Fisher had to talk to his quarterback about whether he could go back into the game. Young had thrown his helmet on the sideline after being intercepted for the second time, and he didn't have his helmet with him when the Titans got the ball back.

Backup quarterback Kerry Collins appeared to be going in, and Fisher took his headset off and talked with Young, who then pulled on his helmet and went into the game.

Fisher said the discussion only involved Young's hamstring and whether he felt physically able to return.

"Regarding the hamstring, he said, 'It's tight,' and I said, 'If it's tight, we'll go with Kerry and try to talk him back into it, and he felt good,'" Fisher said. "When he got out there, he moved. He didn't have any issues with the hamstring on the bootleg on which he was hurt."

Young's second interception came a play after the Titans had picked off one of David Garrard's passes. Trimming interceptions is a key focus for Young this season after being picked off 17 times with only nine touchdown passes in 2007.

Asked if he was disappointed with Young's attitude, Fisher said no.

"He's very competitive," Fisher said. "I've never seen him jump up and down and high-five his teammates after he throws an interception."

Kerry Collins may be older, but he does have experience and is not going to wet himself under center. He likely still has somewhat of an arm, so they did well to have him as a solid veteran backup. That said, they must be disappointed in the progression that VY has shown. They probably thought after all those rookie comeback wins that his progression would be much better, but he seems to have leveled-off. Perhaps it was the "sophomore slump" last year. We'll see once he comes back. When you miss on 1st round QB development, you just hope you have a stop-gap because it's going to take time for them to draft and develop someone else, unless they go free agent.

FISHER FEARED FOR YOUNG
Posted by Mike Florio on September 9, 2008, 9:49 a.m.

The situation in Tennessee has gone from odd to bizarre to downright freaky.

On Monday night, Titans coach Jeff Fisher became worried about Young because he left his home abruptly at 7:30 p.m. and because he seemed “emotionally down” and left his cell phone behind.

Fisher eventually tracked Young down, and they met at 12:30 a.m. at the team’s facility. Also present at the meeting, per WKRN in Nashville, were police officers.

After the meeting, Fisher called the whole thing a misunderstanding. Unnamed sources told WKRN that concerns about Young’s state of mind were unfounded.

Even if that’s true, the mere fact that Fisher developed such concerns about Young strongly suggests that some serious stuff has been happening behind the scenes in Tennessee, and that Sunday’s sideline incident very well could be the beginning of the end of Young’s career with the Titans, and possibly with any other NFL team.

In addition to being booed at home during the regular-season opener and then initially refusing to take the field after throwing his second interception, Young reportedly will miss two-to-four weeks with an MCL injury.

RUMORS FLY ABOUT YOUNG SITUATION
Posted by Mike Florio on September 9, 2008, 10:43 a.m.

The bizarre developments from Monday night regarding Titans quarterback Vince Young are sparking all sorts of questions and rumors regarding precisely what went down.

One reader points out to us that there were some wild rumors making the rounds last night on an Internet forum, as the events were unfolding. Apparently, someone was getting information from a Nashville police officer who had access to radio transmissions.

We’re intrigued by the fact that these rumors were flying not after it became publicly known that Young and coach Jeff Fisher and Metro police met at the team facility at 12:30 a.m., but while the events were transpiring.

Though we’re not going to post the rumors at this time, we think that there’s a lot more to this one than what meets the eye.

Then again, what meets the eye is confusing, at best. Why would police officers be meeting with Fisher and Young at 12:30 a.m.?

The problem is that, to the extent that the truth is embarrassing or troubling to the team or to Young, the team and/or Young are likely to not tell the truth. Hopefully, folks in the media will be able to dig up what really went down.

That it does! Hawk & Bush are better choices too. Mario can even take his play to another level.

The Nashville Tennessean reports Vince Young on Monday "indicated to those around him he didn't want to play football any more." The Titans may be planning to move on without him.

This isn't the first time we've heard this from Young. And "there are indications" the team is ready to move forward with Kerry Collins, even when Young gets healthy. And that assumes Young even wants his job back. Young's mother, rightly concerned, pleaded for people to give her son "space" and "love." But it won't be so simple. A psychologist reported Young was "extremely depressed" and one wonders when he'll see the field again.

I sincerely believe Young is dealing with issues related to being a gay black man in the NFL at a predominately white, and straight, position.

Wow.

That's gotta be chemical (not substance, but internal) because the last thing a man in his position should be is extremely depressed.

I feel bad for the guy. If I'm right, it's a horrible thing that I've witnessed a couple friends fight ... good, talented people with seemingly bright existences.
