1. Green Bay Packers: Hey, all you bandwagon-jumpers, can you kindly huddle up and make some room for the next group?

Using my ranking system (a calculation that uses offensive, defensive and other key stats), I've got the below ranks (best possible rank is 1.0, worst possible is 32.0).

The accuracy of this system/calculation improves as the number of games exist (usually by week 5 or 6).

Just early indications of what's to come and who came out of the gate ready in week 1.

TEAM RANK CALCULATED VALUE
Philadelphia Eagles 1 4.7
Pittsburgh Steelers 2 7.4
Denver Broncos 3 7.5
Buffalo Bills 4 7.7
Baltimore Ravens 5 8.5
Dallas Cowboys 6 8.9
Chicago Bears 7 9.5
Atlanta Falcons 8 10.6
New Orleans Saints 9 11.5
New York Giants 10 11.7
New York Jets 10 11.7
Tennessee Titans 12 12.0
Green Bay Packers 13 12.8
Arizona Cardinals 14 13.9
New England Patriots 15 14.1
Carolina Panthers 16 14.3
San Diego Chargers 17 15.9
Kansas City Chiefs 18 16.5
Minnesota Vikings 19 18.4
Jacksonville Jaguars 19 18.4
San Francisco 49ers 21 18.5
Miami Dolphins 22 18.8
Washington Redskins 23 18.9
Tampa Bay Buccs 24 19.0
Detroit Lions 25 20.5
Indianapolis Colts 26 21.8
Cleveland Browns 26 21.8
Cincinnati Bengals 28 21.9
Oakland Raiders 29 23.4
Seattle Seahawks 30 24.5
Houston Texans 31 24.8
St. Louis Rams 32 26.5

My man, Vinnie, has us 6th. Not that these mean anything, but it's nice to see after week 1.

6. Green Bay Packers (1-0), up 6. It was Aaron Rodgers' night to prove he is no longer in Brett Favre's shadow, but did anyone notice that the Packers are a great all-around team? The running game, defense and special teams all played a big part in putting away the Vikes.

Fosco, your list looks a lot like a one week snapshot--strictly how they did last week.

If "Power Ranking" means simply who's the best team--in order, then it not only is pretty tough, but really subjective at this point.

Pats without Brady, Colts looking like crap, Steelers flying high, Eagles shockingly good, Cowboys good, but not quite as super-looking as some might expect, the lowly Bears easily handling what should have been a top 3 team, it all smacks of parity to me.

Just the same, I really don't see how anybody could make a case for six teams being better than the Packers, probably not even five or four.

You are correct in that it's a continual system based on weekly performance. As I mentioned, it takes about 5 or 6 games to play out and gets more predictive over time.

Football Outsiders have the Packers 2nd in their Power Ranking that is a combination of projection for the year (based on statistical patterns observed last year) and performance in week 1.

Going strictly on Week 1, the Packers are 11th, one step ahead of the Bears. This ranking usually includes adjustments for strength of opponent, but since its only week 1, that adjustment will have to wait for week 4.

Cold Hard Football Facts has us 4th (http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/Articles/10_235_CHFF_speaks_truth_to_Power_Rankings.html)

4. GREEN BAY (1-0, preseason rank: 6)
Last week: Aaron Rodgers (115.5 rating) led the Packers to a turnover-free 24-19 win over the Vikings at home.

Cold, Hard Football Facts: Rodgers completed 18 of 22 passes (81.8%) in his first regular-season start. How many times did Brett Favre complete 80 percent of his passes in his 16 years with Green Bay? Believe it or not, just once: in his very last regular-season game in a Packers uniform. He went 9 of 11 (81.8%) in the 2007 finale against Detroit.

Week 2 matchup: at Detroit. If the Packers rushed for 5.1 YPA against last year’s No. 1 run defense in Week 1, what will they do against a Detroit team that allowed 10 YPA to Atlanta's Michael Turner last week?

And Dr. 7 gave us 6th at SI: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/dr_z/09/10/week.2/index.html

6 Green Bay Packers Last Week: 10

So tell me this. How come Aaron Rodgers sits on the bench for three years and then comes out and plays like a dream, while guys like Kyle Boller and Rex Grossman never seem to get the hang of it? Could it have something to do with coaching, hmmm?

Other notables are that Chicago jumped from 24th to 8th and the Vikes fell from 4th to 18th. Z's just made because he thought T-jack had learned how to throw.

Last year's #1 rated run defense is this year's #21 rated run defense.

(so far, that is) :P

You take the foot pounds of torque generated by the O and D lines
Mulitply that the RPM's of the RB's legs at 20mph

Then, jam a bull whip up your arse, call yourself a sports writer, and make up as much shit as you can and hope no one notices fast enough to fire you.

Thats what a power ranking is.
