ROMAN FEELS STIFFED, BECOMES MIFFED
Jacked From realfootball365.com

Green Bay Packers defensive back Mark Roman has asked for his release, due to the signing of former Seattle Seahawk Marquand Manuel. In fact, Roman has been asking a bit less vocally lately and choosing not to attend offseason workouts. Reportedly, Roman's original request was answered by Green Bay management with promises and/or implications that he would be starting at cornerback in 2006. When the Packers signed Manuel - ironically enough, Roman's backup when the two played in Cincinnati - Roman wasted little time, figuring his days starting in Green Bay were over. Roman played with the Cincinnati Bengals for four years, culminating in a 2003 season which saw him playing in all sixteen games.

After signing with the Pack as a free agent, Roman started 31 of 32 games to run up 190 tackles. Decent statistics there, but working against Roman are some other damning figures: Roman gave up nine touchdowns versus grabbing two interceptions, both in 2005.

After having beaten out guys like Arturo Freeman and Marques Anderson for a spot on the starting team over the past two seasons, Roman evidently did not wish to compete again, especially against a guy he'd beaten for a spot before. Roman was still listed as starting at safety as minicamp opened. However, many figured this was merely due to Manuel's persisting groin injury, and had Manuel - not Roman - starting opposite Nick Collins.

Marquand Manuel comes to Green Bay from NFC champion Seattle; you may remember him as one of three defensive 'Hawks knocked out in Super Bowl XL. The groin injury he suffered then dogs him to this day and, like most injuries during the preseason, the extent of which remains a secret. Manuel entered the starting lineup in Week Seven, when starter Ken Hamlin was incapacitated after a head injury suffered after being attacked by assailants in Seattle. Manuel played all sixteen games and three playoff games in Hamlin's stead.

In his four-year career with the Bengals and Seahawks, Manuel has played in 54 of 59 games with no interceptions and 122 tackles. To be fair, 67 of those tackles came in 2005; and Manuel average 6.1 tackles per game in which he started. Certainly, the front office would like to find a way to somehow keep Manuel and Roman in Green Bay.

Nine-year veteran Earl Little is still around, but he spent the majority of last season injured and the majority of the last two years disgruntled about Roman starting over him. Last year, six-year journeyman Todd Franz was also at strong safety, but Packer brass is so unenthusiastic about him that GM Ted Thompson stated in May the team had "no plans" to re-sign the unrestricted free agent. One wonders if he'll change his mind now...

I think that's dated and not completely true, Roman did in fact attend OTA's.

That was what I thought too. I thought he was 'pitching in there', quite well.
