Miami Dolphins' Ferguson leaves game with injury

BY JEFF DARLINGTON
jdarlington@MiamiHerald.com
Exactly what injury nose guard Jason Ferguson sustained during the first quarter of Sunday's game remains unclear.

It might have been an injury to his ribs (the initial diagnosis in the press box). Or it might have been his hip or oblique (that's what Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said after the game).

Either way, it hurt Ferguson. And it also hurt the Dolphins.

Already dealing with a lack of depth at the position in the wake of Paul Soliai's one-game suspension for a violation of team rules, Miami utilized Randy Starks and rookie Lionel Dotson at a position where they would be considered undersized in a 3-4 system.

The result? The Ravens ran for 140 yards on 35 carries -- 102 yards on 24 carries in the second half when they best exploited the Dolphins middle.

''He's been kind of key to the whole run deal out there and I think the guys that went in there, they tried really hard, but that's where we were,'' Sparano said. ``We gave up [more than 100] yards running today. That can't happen and we know that.''

Sparano wouldn't reveal the rule Soliai violated. Also declining to elaborate was Ferguson when asked about his injury.
