In this video of last week's LSU-South Carolina game, the SC quarterback attempts to take the ball around his left end to score a touchdown. A referee is standing in his way and appears to actually throw his shoulder into the QB which knocks down the QB.
The referee claims he was just defending himself.
What do you think actually happened?

Strange. It works for me. It takes you to Wisconson Badgers > Homer Refs

How weird that he could easily have taken one step and been out of they way...

I think the ref was moving his body in a direction that accidentally sent him towards the ball carrier. The blow with his shoulder was just a protective reaction.
When I first saw it, I thought the ref had a flashback to his playing days. But looking at it a second time, the ref was moving forward before the runner was obviously in his path, I think it was an accident.
i look at it as either the ref takes a step forward and knocks over the guy wearing pads. or the ref stays where he's at, and the old guys gets run over and broken
its just funny as hell that the ref didn't budge an inch and the guy with the ball just got destroyed

I heard on the Dan Patrick Show that the ref involved was a former linebacker for the U. of Kentucky. He may have been instinctively acting like a linebacker rather than a referee.

ya, that's a possibility, and i thought that was the most likely explanation the first time I saw it.
