Free Press columnist Michael Rosenberg answers three questions about the Lions.
1) Is there any plausible explanation for the Lions falling behind early the way they do?
I can think of one: They are a really bad team. I'm sure it's a little more complicated than that, but I don't think it's a lot more complicated.
2) After two starts, what do you make of Dan Orlovsky?
He has happy feet and doesn't look terribly poised, but after two starts, that is to be expected. He appears to have the physical skills to play in the league; now he has to prove he can get in a rhythm and lead a team downfield consistently.
3) How and when -- or can -- the Lions actually win a game this season?
They have a real chance to go 0-16. You have to think that at some point, they'll get a couple of early turnovers, grab a lead and ride it to the end of the game. Um ... right?

Don Banks agrees about the 0-16 prediction. Here's what he says over at SI:
No, for me it's the 0-6 Lions who represent that last bastion of NFL consistency, a beacon of deficiency and defeat amid an almost league-wide sea of uncertainty and unpredictability. Detroit is solid, like a very heavy rock sinking ever lower to the depths, and there's a growing sense of perfect imperfection to these Lions that I'm starting to appreciate. Poor kittens. They really are an embarrassment to the division.

I never thought a franchise could have been worse than the Tampa Bay Bucs of old, but the Lions sure as hell are fighting them for the title.

When in the hell did Vonta Leach start playing defense?
Didn't he used to be the heir-apparent at fullback during the Sherman era?

He was playing fullback. Says he was being guarded by Daniel Bullocks in the caption.
edit: sorry, didnt check your link. Not sure what is up with that, but they have a picture of him in the endzone trying to catch a TD and being guarded by Daniel Bullocks too.

He's the starting FB on their depth chart.
He wound up in Houston when Sherm was there running his ex-Packer - Houston underground railroad.
I thought Houston might make a move this season. They've got some talented kids and a good nucleus, but things crashed in on 'em this year.

I seem to have a vague memory of him playing a bit of LB in Cincy?
edit: sorry, wrong former GB fullback. Who was the other guy that played for the Bengels before us?

It is just painful that the few remaining Lions fans have to look on the Wayne Fontes era as "the good old days."
The Detroit media know it is so bad that all you can do is laugh. Prroplr wouldn't take the Detroit Free Press seriously if they took the Lions seriously.

Actually, I think Wayne Fontes has been the best Lions' coach since Joe Schmidt. Don McCafferty would've been good but he died right away - before his first season there, I think. That would make Fontes the best Lions coach of the past 35 years.
Dang.

Most teams go through peaks and valleys during the season. Odds are that sometime in the next ten games, the Lions will hit somebody in a valley, and win.
There's a lot of parity in the league this year. Arguably, the presumed best five teams in the NFL have ALL been major disappointments so far this season (Cowboys, Patriots, Colts, Packers, and Jaguars). And you look at the teams with the best records, and you just know they are due for a fall also.

This could be the week Detroit gets a win...
Looks like Washington is resting a couple of guys, and talking about who they are hoping to have back the week following the bye. They're looking at two weeks from now.
I know Detroit is bad, but you can't affoard to do that to anyone in this league.

Now that Millen is gone I hope the Lions win so they keep Marinelli hanging around forever. He's terrible at managing a game.
