* On Nick Barnett: "We've lost Nick Barnett for the season because of a ligament tear in his knee." Got the word about a half-hour ago. Declines to say which ligament, though odds are it's the ACL. No surgery scheduled yet. Desmond Bishop is most likely to start in his place.

I wonder why he wouldn't say which ligament?

That sucks..He wasn't having a good season, but he's much better than Bishop.

Chillar Hawk Poppinga?

I think the coaches should try that instead of...

Hawk Bishop Popping.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy revealed Monday that MLB Nick Barnett needs surgery to repair a torn ligament in his knee. He will be placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Desmond Bishop is directly behind Barnett on the depth chart, but Green Bay may also explore moving A.J. Hawk or Brandon Chillar to the middle with Brady Poppinga staying outside. The Packers have lost three key defenders for the year in Barnett, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, and Cullen Jenkins and their fantasy defense's prospects are very dim going forward. They are currently 28th against the run and will likely continue to struggle there.

We heard his name the very play after he got injured, when his replacement at MLB was responsible for giving up a lengthy TD...

Since they will have a roster spot open, I thought maybe they could sign Hodge, who had gone to the Bengals practice squad. But, after a couple weeks on their practice squad, Cincy signed him to their 53 man roster in October. I didn't catch that before.

Barnett was only playing average anyhow. He whiffed on several tackles so I don't see his loss as monumental. I think Bishop and Chillar (if healthy) can fill in adequately here. We still have serious problems on the line however and there isn't really anyway to fix that until next year. It is what it is.

-McCarthy was not sure whether backup Desmond Bishop would be promoted to the starting lineup or if weak-side linebacker A.J. Hawk would move into the middle, with Brandon Chillar taking over on the weak side.

Hopefully Hawk thrives at MLB (like in college)

A bit premature to pass judgment on Bishop, isn't it? Let's give him a few games first.
Didn't Bishop force the first fumble by a linebacker all season when he knocked the ball out of Peterson's arms? And at a crucial time, too! :)

but with our new style of offense called not scoring any points... we need playmakers on the D side of the ball and not just in the secondary... a top 5 pick should be that player for u

It won't be KGB. They'll either bring in another LB, or if they can manage with some combination with the ones they have, probably another DT. They have enough DE's that they don't need to bring KGB back.

Sometimes it takes me a while, because I usually want to think about options. Hodge immediately came to mind, but that can't happen now.

The other part of the equation is that Lansanah is a bit of an unknown. They signed him in part because they didn't want to lose him, and he had an offer on the table from Miami(?). Hard to know if they really think he is ready to play, or not. He might have merited a spot as the 6th linebacker, but may not be ready to be #5. If that is the case, they may go looking for a linebacker.

What I don't know is how much learning curve would Hawk have moving from Will to Mike. This defense is pretty assignment specific, and it may not be an easy thing for Hawk to learn the Mike assignments. Probably less disruptive to leave him where he is and try out the understudy.

The Packers run defense just got better.

Against run teams I'd go Hawk, Bishop, Poppinga
Against pass teams I'd go Hawk, Bishop, Chillar
Against balanced teams I'd lean toward better run D with Poppinga

IN obvious run situations I'd have Hawk, Bishop, Poppinga
In nickle I'd go Hawk/Chillar

We already have a 2nd Nick Barnett. His name is Brandon Chillar. The great thing about Chillar is that our coaching staff isn't idiotically stubborn enough to play him out of position so instead of having a puss in the middle, we'll now have a legit MLB with a great nickle backer / pass coverage specialist on the OUTSIDE.

The next move that has to happen is Wells has to be ousted from his Center position. His utter wimpiniess largely went unnoticed when we had unprepared rookies starting. Next to them he looked reliable because he acctually got in front of his guy and put up mild resistance. Usually one of the rooks olayed his guy into Brett's lap and Well's ineptitude went unnoticed. Now that we have 3rd year guards, you can see him for the zero he is.

Get him the F out of there. NOW. Football is a physical game, won most of the time by the more phsyical team. YOu cannot win when your guys get beat down by the opposition.

Not to pile up on Wells, but have you ever listened to him. He's an idiot to go along with being a wimp for his position. A true football zero. Potentially interesting observation. Do you mean he's a jerk (not uncommon in the NFL) or that he's mouth breathing stupid? If the latter, that really could be a problem. Your center should be one of the smarter guys on your team. A C has signficant line-call responsibilities and has to be mentally quick, observant, a good student of film, and decisive. If Wells can't bring the mental wood, then he adds nothing at all to the line.

Chillar Hawk Poppinga?

I think the coaches should try that instead of...

Hawk Bishop Popping.

I don't know that I want to see Hawk in the middle. He's become very important in coverage. I would rather see Bishop get his shot there.

However, in the interest of getting the best players on the field, what about Hawk Popp Chillar? Any reason Poppinga can't play in the middle?

As far as who they're going to pick up to replace Barnett, I don't think it will be an LB. We're already carrying more bodies than usual there, so I think we'll use our depth at that pos'n, and shore up another position.

I don't care that much that Barnett is out. I'm sorry for him, it sucks to have to go through this. But since the run defense is sucking, I want to see what another linebacker can do in the middle. Poppinga inside would be interesting experiment.

The injury to Cullen Jenkins seemed much more devestating. Perhaps its because expectations for the Packer season have fallen.

When Barnett gets back from his knee surgury he's going to be a small, weak, undisaplined and now slow LB who is making a lot of money. I think the smart thing to do would be to cut him, but the Packers will keep him around and waste their time and money.

It's going to be interesting to see how this shakes out. I don't think Bishop is too much of a downgrade over Barnett (given his current play). He is a heavier hitter and may be a wash in coverage, but he has shown to be capable in preseason.

I also wouldn't mind seeing how Hawk does in the middle. I don't think we are getting the most bang for the buck out of our former top 5 pick and would like to see him more involved in the D. If he is a definate upgrade, let Barnett man the weak side. He's gotten paid so $$ shouldn't be an issue :P Hell, we have Chillar and Popps yet to experiment with.

Overall, I think we have a good group of LBs. The coaches just need to sort shite out and put them in a position to be successful. Winston Moss should have some insight....

It's going to be interesting to see how this shakes out. I don't think Bishop is too much of a downgrade over Barnett (given his current play). He is a heavier hitter and may be a wash in coverage, but he has shown to be capable in preseason.

I'd love to see how Hawk fares in the middle.
Come Sunday, Chillar would be most helpful in reining in the Bear's tight ends. I hope they assign Woodson to Hester whenever he's on the field.
Harris would make for an ugly mismatch.

When Barnett gets back from his knee surgury he's going to be a small, weak, undisaplined and now slow LB who is making a lot of money. I think the smart thing to do would be to cut him, but the Packers will keep him around and waste their time and money.

& pay an injury settlement equal to the GNP of Costa Rica. You can't really cut a guy in that situation.

The inactives from Sunday were: Brian Brohm 3rd QB, CB Pat Lee, RB DeShawn Wynn, LB Brandon Chillar, DE Jason Hunter, LB Danny Lansanah, OT Breno Giacomini, OG Allen Barbre

We went into the game w/4 LB's and lost the starting Mike?

Ooops.

I think it will be Popp, Bishop and Hawk, Bishop at the Mike.

Hawk is from Dayton OH. One of his relatives had a little blurb in the Dayton Daily News in early September that Hawk told his family his chest injury was a real bitch and he thought he'd be out the first month. Chillar is the only surprise to the good this yearn. Barnett was out to lunch all year, Hawk is hurt and didn't have the break-out season, Popp has been Popp. He's all fill and little cover. Chillar has been a pleasant surprise, but the LB group really hasn't hacked the program this year at all.

I'm with this all the way. It's too bad for Barnett but I wouldn't be surprised if we noticed a different kind of defensive vibe this weekend. Maybe nothing dramatic, but I'm expecting a lot more football energy.

I'm a little surprised at the clamor for Hodge. My understanding was that he wasn't a strong ST player, so even if you could bring the guy back, he'd be nothing more than a back up middle linebacker - Bishop beat him out both on ST and at the middle linebacker spot, I believe.

I wish Lasagna were ready, and maybe he is in terms of strictly being a backup, but I think we all know how promising rookies usually take time to develop into players.

I don't really even know who's out there any more, either. Odell Thurman, Bretsky? Our old pal?

I thought of Hodge for just that purpose - a backup role. To me he would have made sense because of his familiarity with the defense, the team, the coaches. But it doesn't matter since he is not available.

Article on Chillar.

Chillar, thanks to his time in Jim Haslett's scheme with the Rams, is the one Packers linebacker who knows how to blitz. And it showed against Chicago, as he "got home" on most of his five blitzes.

"That's all we did in St. Louis was blitz. I was blitzing almost every other play down there," Chillar said. "Anytime you do something that much, you're going to get good at it."

Interesting quote. Makes you wonder how much more Barnett, Hawk, and Brady would be at it--if they blitzed more.

Yeah, and then we could have a defense like the Rams when Chillar was there.

Get off the blitzing crap already.

Listen old man. I've never advocated a bunch of blitzing. I think we get too vanilla at times, but I think the defense worked last year and the pass defense is good this year. I just wonder if Hawk, Barnett, and Poppinga don't do that well blitzing because they don't do it much.
