It's hard to get excited about two 5-7 teams battling in a non-conference matchup in December with little hope remaining for playing in January....

.... BUT - it's the fricken Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field!

We'll have a long 9 months to complain about lack of previous offseason moves, questionable coaching calls, draft prospects, etc. But for 3 hours tomorrow, we still get to cheer on the Green & Gold.

Personally, I want this team to begin planning for the future and seeing who really wants to be part of this team next year. If we win and are still in playoff hunt tomorrow night, that's just icing on the cake.

Things to watch for:
- Will Schaub be able to play effectively on a bum knee on the frozen tundra (daytime high in the teens)?
- Can the Packers stop rookie RB Steve Slaton (preseason I was hoping to see Ahman again - but that got put on the shelf long ago)?
- Will we see any hustle, energy, life - from the team or the crowd?
- Will our kickoff coverage continue to be porous?
- How will the new punter emerge - if he shanks one, does the crowd boo?
- Will Mario get after ARod after coming off a 3 sack performance against the Jags?
- Will Jackson get the action?

Green Bay (on paper) is only marginally better than the Texans. If the squad comes out flat after last week's tough loss, I could see this team packing it up for next year...

I sort of regret not being able to play against the Sherminator in this game. Maybe we can get Texas A&M in for a scrimmage next summer to set things right.

I won't give up on the season as long as 9-7 is a possibility. 9-7 could still win this division. It will be interesting to see how the team, and the crowd react tomorrow. My guess is that getting off to a good start is pretty important. The cold can seem colder if you fall behind by more than a touchdown.

Offensively, Houston passes for a lot of yards, but have been intercepted 18 times, so hopefully the Pack can pick off a few tomorrow. Their running game is nothing special, although Slaton is dangerous. Defensively, opposing QB's have had 18 TD passes, and only 10 INT's and a passer rating of about 90. Could be a big day for Arod if Tauscher and Clifton can contain Mario.

On another thread I wrote that if your team is in a position in which in order to get into the playoffs it has to win out, and a combination of other circumstances ("If the division leader loses to X buy not Y, and team Z's kicker was circumsised on a Wednesday, then we get into the playoffs!") must occur, then you really have little hope and you're not being too realistic. I was trying to say it's kind of silly to think that all that might happen...and a 5-7 team is not really worth getting worked up over.

Yet here I am, once again fallen under the spell...my disgust at last week's loss has faded, and I find myself - again - thinking gee, if only they win tomorrow...and y'know, the Lions almost beat the Vikes earlier this season...so it could happen...and then the Pack goes on the road...and if...and if....

Ah, to be a fan.

Go Pack go!

If the Pack wins out (Really big if since the longest win streak this year is 2), it's not that far fetched. Vikes would have to split their last 4 games which would make them 9-7. Pack would win tie breaker against the Vikes because of division record, and against the Bears because of head to head.

SUPER BOWL OR BUST BABY!!! Yeah I know exactly how both of you feel. By about Wednesday night, the loss starts to seem fuzzy and by Friday morning I can't wait for Sunday to come. We have the easiest part of our schedule ahead and can easily (ha) win each game, except the Bears. And the Vikings could lose to Arizona and NY so yes we make the playoffs.

I will have to watch the game on Justin.tv because they will not play it in the Chicago market. The Pack always rally in December so I'm pulling for a 9-7 record and to sneak into the playoffs. The Bears and Vikes will choke as usual.

OK Fos, get us goin'.

We need a win and we need a win NOW!.

If we need to blame some one, Tarlem, my drunken Aussie rugger brother is as good an excuse as any.

I'm headed to the Packer bar. With the decline of the Packers and the emergence of NFL Ticket, there no longer a full fledged Packer Bar in Covington KY. There is now a "Packer Corner" in the old Packer bar. Where I will be, sippin' cheerin' and hopefully, not moaning.

Like I was 4 out of the last 5 weeks. Bring on that Chicago game spirit!

Should be interesting to see how the team plays in the elements. Right now it's a toasty 3 degrees in Green Bay.

Inactives:
* LB Brandon Chillar, who tweaked a groin in the middle of the week, can't go so Desmond Bishop will start at weak-side linebacker.
* Charles Woodson will again start at strong safety.
* Here are the Packers' inactives: QB Brian Brohm, S Atari Bigby, CB Joe Porter, RB DeShawn Wynn, LB Brandon Chillar, OT Breno Giacomini, OG Allen Barbre, DE Jeremy Thompson.
* LB Spencer Havner is active.
* Texans inactives: QB Craig Nall, S Nick Ferguson, CB Matteral Richardson, S Will Demps, LB Kevis Coley, OG Kasey Studdard, OT Rashad Butler, TE Mark Bruener.
* Texans lineup change: Brandon Harrison starts at SS for Ferguson.

If Schaub is coming off of injury, you'd think he'd be a little rusty.

Even if he was throwing well, I would think they'd depend more on Slaton. (especially now with Chillar out). With the possible footing issues, a scatback like him could wreak havoc.

Personally, don't like the zone scheme. Our best coverage is man to man.

GB 30
Texans 13

Defense comes back mainly due to conditions
GBP Defense scores a TD
Offense looks solid

Tex comes out and praises Vanilla Bob

GB beats a bad Texans team

Fosco33

Bold prediction B.

I see Schaub being minimized due to injury and weather - with Slaton getting plenty of touches. If he gets 120+ w/ 2+ TDs, Pack will lose.

Pack needs to win turnover battle - or they'll lose.

I think the Pack wins - but it'll probably be uglier than we should expect to see at this point in the season - within a TD.

NFL.com show Houston TD, what happened?

Packers blitzed, Schaub found Kevin Walter in one on one coverage, Walter caught it and ran inside where Tramon Williams, trying to run Walter down, tripped over Nick Collins effectively taking both players out of the play. Walter could have crawled into the endzone untouched.

I'd pick someone out from the Lambeau Field stands to play safety before I took Woodson off the corner and put him in there. Seriously, I don't care who they'd pick. Woodson's strength is playing press coverage at the line, not cover 2 zone coverage from the safety spot.

How did Jennings hang on to that ball?!

I didn't see the play but that dude has great hands and concentration.

The pass had some smoke on it and was behind Jennings. Greg had to twist around backwards to make the catch, and literally caught it with his fingertips. Somehow then held onto the ball without bringing it in and cradling it against his body. It was incredible.

M3 says TWill could start on most teams - and I would tend to agree. Do you think he's hunting for INTs (good on slant, in, out) but not on coverage (slant/go, post, streak)?

If he shored up run defense, shedding a block and reducing the big plays - guys a stud. Hard to say that with someone who's only started like 6 games - and has 5 INTs.

Glad we're actually grooming him for long-term. I wonder if Harris's comments on being too old, etc are true?

Negatives:
Schaub has 200 yards.
Walter has 100 yards and a TD.
Slaton has 88 yards rushing alone (and at least 35 receiving).

In one half....

Positives:
Winning turnover battle (both by TWill)
Improved field position and punting by GB
Bishop playing well (sans last play)
Spreading ball around (8 receivers on 11 completions)

My adjustment:
-Give the ball to Jackson - sorry Grant, 9 for 33 yards isn't cutting it
-Mix up run/pass (1.6:1 ratio is too high for this weather) - take your shots downfield but make them count
-Pack is 0-5 on 3rd down --- have to improve on that
-Pack defense has given up multiple 3rd and long conversions (before today, Texans had ZERO)
-Spy Slaton if you're not already. Reduce the blitz packages and give overtop coverage to Walter.

I agree for the most part. But I'd like to add this small suggestion:

Somebody PLEASE tell Aaron that it's ok to set his feet before he throws the ball, particularily on a bootleg or rollout play. I'm getting real sick of seeing him get picked off because he refuses to stop and set his feet. I don't see him being all that accurate when throwing on the run and geez, if you got protection set your friggin feet fer phux sake.

See my initial post of this thread - playing true mostly.

- Will we see any hustle, energy, life - from the team or the crowd?

If the squad comes out flat after last week's tough loss, I could see this team packing it up for next year...

Story of this game is third down conversions. They make them. We don't.

And we all thought of Bishop as a hard hitter...

Monty is quietly having himself a pretty good game.

I wonder if they ever work on wrapping up and tackling form. I remember when I played football and that's all we would work on for the first week. Do they not practice how to tackle in the NFL?

Well - two good hits by Woodson.
Montgomery with his 2nd big play of the day (season?).

No because everything is like the ESPN highlight reel. Don't make the unspectacular wrap up tackle, gotta go for that big time hit (that still might not bring him down).

See the block in the back on that one to spring Turk loose? They showed it twice on the replay!!

Where's the holding? Looked questionable.

That was just unbelievable those blocks to the back and flat out tackling by the Texans.

We have gotten away with a few as well today, but damn!

We had him stopped but there was a blatant block in the back that wasn't called. You could clearly see it on the replay.

You're probably right. Too much "ME ME ME" and not enough just making the damn tackle.

On the punt, I noticed sometimes teams start turning their backs before the punter punts it and I always wondered why the punter didn't just take off if they weren't looking. It works.

These announcers don't catch much besides the obvious.

Any word on Tausch?

Was that Montgomery that wasn't even LOOKING at the punter yet continued to push his guy? Hilarious!

This drive epitomizes the season. And it could effectively kill the season at the same time.

I know our team isn't playing well but damn it, the referees this year have been absolutely abysmal. Every one of them needs to be fired and replaced after this season is finished.
