ESPN's Ed Werder confirms that impending free agent NT Tank Johnson will not be retained by the Cowboys this offseason.

This was reported two days ago in the Dallas Morning News. Tank kept his nose clean with Dallas and likely has a better chance of finding a team in 2009 than Adam Jones. Johnson could help a team running a 4-3 defense.

He's only 27 and would be a major upgrade at the DT position... We wouldn't have to address it with our 1st round overall and could get more pressing needs (DE/OL)

Thoughts?

No, no, 1000 times no.

As far as I know, he's not a 3-4 nose, and thats probably why they're letting him walk. Why did they let Ferguson go? Isn't he lights out as a nose?

He would be decent in a 4-3.

Take a shot at him

Who said we are going to 3-4... 4-3 is the most likely formation we are going into next year, and Tank Johnson is very effective at DT in the 4-3 scheme (see Bears)...

No kidding, he'll shoot back.

Maybe JJ actually learned a lesson this year about the ramifications of bringing in every headcase and problem child in the league, and Jones and Johnson are the beginning a purge?

 :P  :P

Man, I almost fell for that one myself. I crack me up. He's probably just clearing cap room for Micheal Vick.

I wonder how many other teams will be gunning for him, that might drive up the price.

Thompsons likely to be rifling through the FA DL prospects anyways. Maybe he could do a bang up job?

You think TT will pull the trigger on this deal?

If I'm TT I would take the shotgun approach to revamping the defense: sign Tank Johnson, Odell Thurman, Pacman Jones and Dwight Smith, and hope you hit the target with one of them.

Never trust a man named Tank.

Seriously, Johnson kinda disappeared at mid-season. He played well for a bit, but would he be worth the $? I really can't say, but I don't think so.

Do you think it's wise to have so many loose cannons on the roster?

Well, they've got a safety. So it might be ok.

Incentive to play his old team twice a year might be a good selling point.

Sign him TT. This defense could use a shot in the arm. I hear he's deadly against the shotgun formation.

Green Bay may not be a very appealing city to Tank because there's not alot of nightlife...but they do have a Target.

Of course it's me....you know....if Brett Favre were in Green Bay.....well....they wouldn't need Tank because Brett Favre played defense, too....but....if he still were in Green Bay....BOOM! Tank would come! (Madden impression)

Problem is that when TT aims for a certain player, he sometimes fails to pull the trigger.

Holy crap, if I was a running back playing against that, I'd insist the D had to pass through a metal detector on their way onto the field!

To me, Tank has his moments as a Bear, but he wasn't all that great. Tommie Harris was the stud. I don't think he's worth the gamble.
