"Emergency officials are responding to a downed plane in New York's Hudson River. The FAA confirmed US Airways Flight 1549 was down in the river after a failed takeoff. Coast Guard units were responding, and a ferry on site was dropping life jackets into the water. A police source said the pilot radioed that he had experienced a bird strike. "I think everyone made it off," a passenger told CNN."

Given the make-up of most flights Ive been on, it's amazing no one was trampled or shoved into the river without a jacket.

Yes. Unfortunately I can only observe people on airplanes where I've been physically present. That is key. Thank you for making note of that.

I found out about that one while on a layover. I so love that. I'm amazed that everyone got out and that no one froze to death in the river.

The JSO story on this reports that the commuter ferry Thomas Jefferson was one of the first to arrive on scene to help in the rescue. Who was the skipper of this ferry? His name is...

The pilot showed remarkable judgment and skill in safely manuvering the plane into the water.

What is interesting is that a few years ago, a couple of airlines wanted to eliminate all of their pilots over the age 58.

The picture of that US Airways plane suggested the guy was in his early 60's. What would have been tragic if that pilot was not at the controls of the plane because he had been deemed "too old." He ended up saving the lives of all his passengers and crew probably due to his experience.

The co-pilot is from Oregon, Wisconsin and was exemplary, too:

So many people did so many wonderful things to help...what a story.
