Warren Gerds column: Quest continues with film on Packers fans
Bernie Van De Yacht reports progress in his effort to film a screenplay he wrote about fans of the Green Bay Packers.
"I now have a producer, a little seed money and a lot of confidence that this could very well happen," said Van De Yacht, a Hobart native who resides in California.
Called "Missing Gene," the screenplay centers around the relationship between a Packers fan who hasn't missed a game in decades and his son, Gene, who is not into sports and lives far away. After the father suffers a stroke, going to Packers games is part of his therapy.
Van De Yacht was in Green Bay last month for meetings, including at Packers headquarters. A Packers spokesman has noted the team does not endorse movie projects but will answer questions and point people in the right direction.
Van De Yacht plans to return in a few weeks for more meetings.
Ahead, a reading of the script is planned at the Meyer Theatre in downtown Green Bay at the end of August.
Van De Yacht made "Something About Meryl," a 2004 movie that played on the film fest circuit. He also was the model for The Prince in 1994's animated "The Swan Princess" and appeared as the character in the Macy's Parade and the Cannes Film Festival.
For the local reading, Van De Yacht said he plans to bring in three professional actors from Los Angeles and augment them with local actors.
