Red,
Do we really need any more draft picks?
Maybe the NFL can give us a couple of "compensatory free agents". :P

No, that's not a compensatory pick. That's consideration for our trade of Favre to the Jets.
Compensatory picks are awarded by the league when you have lost more FA's than you have signed. We didn't do that, so we don't get any of 'em.

NFL compensation picks are quite confusing. There is a formula, but it's kind of a house secret.
A recent instance of a comp pick had a lot of people wondering. The Steelers were a awarded a 5th round pick for Alan Faneca. This caused 31 teams and their fans to snicker. The compensation seemed pretty low. The Steelers lost LB Haggans, but signed Mewelde Moore, so Faneca was the net loss for the team.
The league then released some info I wasn't aware of. A 10 year man can't be compensated for by a 3rd round pick. that knocked Faneca's comp to no higher than a 4th. Moore made a positive contribution to the Steelers play-off drive. So the league gave Pitt a 5th for their loss of the All-Pro Faneca.
Strange, but true.
