Good Morning Rastak, are there any rumors that the Vikings will be using any "Wildcat" formations now that they drafted Percy Harvin? Here's an analysis of the first round: http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d80ffc3be&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true&icampaign=TW_%20Day1

Still some very interesting players out there , especially at OT, OLB/DE and TE.

Ras, doesn't the draft start at 10:00?

I would think Harvin would be perfect for that....but Chilly isn't that creative.

Rastak

I am hoping for a couple different guys for the Vikings in round 3....

DJ Moore CB or Jerron Gilbert DT

Both will likely be gone.

Gilbert, Sidbury and Michael Johnson are all still available at DE. All should go in Round 3.

The Packers need a punter bad, last year was awful. I like the guy from SMU: http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/profiles/thomas-morstead?id=71407

This DT is a bit of a project but might be worth a 4th or 5th round pick, Tyson Jackson's teammate: http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/profiles/ricky-jean-francois?id=79583#profiles-tabs:players-overview

I posted this in another thread but here's who I wouldn't mind seeing today.

Tony Fiammetta - FB Syracuse
Graham Gano - K Florida State and switch him to punter or another P
Michael Johnson - DE Georgia Tech (Bengals)
D.J. Moore - CB Vanderbilt
Kraig Urbik - G Wisconsin
Jamon Meredith - T South Carolina
Everette Pedescleaux - DT Northern Iowa
The Badgers (Beckum, Kemp, Shaughnessy (Raiders), Casillas, Levy, Pressley)

Of course they are and yes I am. Very proud of it to though I think it's fair to say that Badgers usually do well in the NFL. Playing in the rugged Big 10 and running a pro style offense certainly helps prepare them.

I did have Shaughnessey rated as a top 10 player in this draft once upon a time and I think if he would have been healthy he would have went even earlier.

Not a need pick, that's for sure.

I am an Iowa Hawkeye fan after moving from WI to IA when I was in 4th grade. I rememeber when Hayden Fry came there and put them back on the map. They slumped a little when he left and Ferentz took over as the cupboard was a bit bare. I've seen a few RB's come through there, and this guy is legit. He is hard to bring down on first contact and consistently got to the second level, and is kind of a bull with a bit of speed and shake. Just ask the WI defenders if he seemed slow. He should have as good a shot as any back at making the roster and perhaps making an early contribution.

Overall Football Traits

Production 2 2006: Allen appears in all 13 games recording a total of 24 tackles including 1.5 tackles-for-loss. He returns 19 kickoffs for a total of 420 yards (22.1 yard avg.) and four punts for a total of 53 yards. 2007: Allen starts 11 of the 13 games he appears in recording a total of 64 tackles including three tackles-for-loss and two sacks. He intercepts three passes along and breaks up four passes. Allen breaks school's single-season record for kickoff-return yards tallying a total of 690 yards on 28 returns (24.6 yard avg.) 2008: Allen starts all 13 games recording a total of 53 tackles including 4.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack. He breaks up seven passes. Allen returns five punts for a total of 91 yards (18.2 yard avg.).

Height-Weight-Speed 3 Adequate height with a solid build for his frame. Possesses adequate-to-good top-end speed for the position.
Durability 2 Broke a bone in his right hand during 2008 LSU game but didn't miss any time. Is tough and will play through pain.

Character 1 Quality young man from a solid background. A hard worker with outstanding overall intangibles.

Defensive Corner specific Traits

Recognition Skills/Toughness 1 Above-average instincts. Reads keys and quarterbacks' eyes. Extremely aggressive and isn't afraid to jump underneath routes. Physical at the line of scrimmage when playing press man and hard corner in cover-two look. Plays with a mean streak and does not shy away from contact. A solid, wrap-up tackler. Played second half of the season with a broken right hand and Georgia didn't disclose the injury until after the regular season finale.

Closing Burst 2 Shows above-average closing burst coming out of backpedal. Closes extremely fast when coming forward on the ball thrown in front of him. Also shows burst off the edge and can get to the quarterback when asked to blitz. Displays only decent deep recovery speed and can get in trouble when bites on double moves.

Fluidity 3 Fluid athlete and can change directions quickly but footwork is a bit inconsistent. Takes too many false steps coming out of breaks.

Ball Skills 4 Aggressive and goes after the football. Extends arms and gets hands on ball without committing pass interference. However, he displays below average hands and drops some passes that should catch. Broken hand likely hindered him in 2008 but he recorded zero interceptions last season and only 3 INTs in 2007.

Run Support 2 Physical and fills quickly when reads run. Strong open field tackler and flashes ability to deliver the big hit. However, takes too long to shed blocks and can get engulfed by

Overview

The two-year starter at strong-side cornerback decided to forgo his final year of eligibility to test his wares in the National Football League. He closed out his Bulldogs career as one of the elite kickoff return specialists in school history despite handling the duty for just two years.

Allen's 47 kickoff returns for 1,110 yards rank third on the Georgia career record list, as his average of 23.6 yards per attempt placed him fourth in school history. Those totals were aided by his 28 returns for 690 yards in 2007, both setting new Bulldogs season marks.

At Tucker High School, Allen excelled in football, basketball and track. On the football field, he earned Atlanta Journal-Constitution Super 11 and Super Southern 100 honors. He was a member of the Fox Sports Net All-South third-team, Super Prep All-American and Prep Star Top 200 squads. He was rated the ninth-best cornerback in the country by Rivals.com.

Allen earned Coaches Choice All-State honors as a junior punt/kick returner, as he had seven punt returns and two kickoffs for touchdowns. On offense, the receiver had 36 receptions for 432 yards and five touchdowns as a junior and almost 500 yards and six rushing scores. As a cornerback, he recorded six interceptions, 46 solo tackles and 20 assists as a junior.

Allen enrolled at Georgia in January, 2006, competing during spring drills. He was named the team's Defensive Newcomer of the Year, seeing action in 13 contests behind Paul Oliver (San Diego) at weak-side cornerback. He posted 24 tackles (20 solos) on defense and also handled return duties. He averaged 22.1 yards on 19 kickoff returns and 13.5 yards on four punt returns.

As a sophomore, Allen started the team's final 11 games at strong-side cornerback, recording a career-high 64 tackles (50 solos) with a pair of sacks and a fumble recovery. He had his only interceptions (three) during his time with the Bulldogs and broke up four other throws. He tied the school single-season record with 28 kickoff returns and broke another annual mark by gaining 690 yards on those runbacks.

Allen started all 13 games at strong-side cornerback in 2008. The Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist played in the last five contests with a right hand fracture, wearing a cast that prevented him from getting too many interception opportunities and not handle the bulk of the kickoff return chores like he did in the past. He still managed to record 53 tackles (44 solos), adding 4.5 stops for loss while deflecting seven throws.

Partially due to his injury, Allen decided to leave Georgia after the season, joining fellow underclassmen quarterback Matthew Stafford and running back Knowshon Moreno in declaring for the 2009 NFL Draft. "Asher Allen has been a great part of our football team as well as our overall athletic program over the past three years," head coach Mark Richt said. "We will certainly miss him, however, we wish him the very best in the NFL Draft and with his professional football aspirations in the future."

"This was the hardest decision of my life because of my love and respect for Georgia and everyone who is affiliated with Georgia, including the fans, my teammates, my coaches, the academic staff and everyone else," Allen said. "I have been chasing this dream of playing in the NFL and after making this decision with my family, I feel like I am ready for this next step. But I owe everyone the world who has helped me out during my time at Georgia."

I don't know anything about this guy. He's 5'10" and ran a 4.64 40. Short and slow. I like it.

On all seriousness, when was he projected to go? McGinn doesn't have him in his top 100.

He's actually 5'9"! I love the pick. Short with 5.52 speed. Jennings is licking his chops!

The talking head who - naturally - was lauding Bill Belichik's drafting brilliance said what was so wonderful was how versatile all of Belichik's picks are.

Overall Football Traits

Production 1 Lang lines up at defensive tackle and starts one of the 11 games he appears in as a true freshman in 2005. He switches to offensive tackle in 2006 and goes on to start 36 consecutive games during the 2006-'08 seasons. Lang earns second-team All-MAC honors in 2008.

Height-Weight-Speed 2 Adequate height, good bulk and above-average top-end speed.

Durability 1 Finished career with 36 consecutive starts.

Character 2 Majoring in Criminal Justice and there are no off-the-field issues to our knowledge. Can play any position along the offensive line.

Offensive Tackle specific Traits

Strength/Toughness 2 Plays with an edge and an effective hand fighter. Upper body strength appears more than adequate and flashes the ability to deliver a violent initial punch. Finishes blocks.

Agility 3 Shows good body control in space and adequate lateral mobility for size but not an elite athlete.

Awareness 3 Does a good job of turning ends outside on draws. Keeps head up in pass protection and does a nice job of helping guard out when no defenders come to him.

Pass Protection 3 Stays engaged and makes it difficult for defensive linemen to get their hands up in passing lanes. Gets adequate knee bend, does a good job of resetting feet and can hold ground against bull rushers. Leans too much and is vulnerable to push-pull moves. Takes too long to redirect and going to have some problems countering double moves. Lacks elite initial quickness and going to have a harder time preventing edge rushers from turning the corner at the NFL level.

Run Blocking 2 Gets excellent hand placement and drives legs once in position. Does an adequate job of opening hips, shows above-average range for size and can get around the corner when asked to pull. Takes adequate angles to downfield blocks and can cover up linebackers at the second level.

Waldo
04-26-2009, 11:44 AM

It's TJ Lang.

There ya go B. Got the guy you wanted.

He was a DL to start his college career, switching to OL his sophomore season. Biggest strength I can see is his versatility, but that's not exactly what I was looking for with this pick. I wanted a guy who is a tackle, was recruited as a tackle and has started as a tackle for his entire career. Someone who might be a little bit more polished. Hopefully this works out.

All I read in his bio was about his transformation to OL as a sophmore and his ability to switch inside to G or C if needed. Don't we have guys like that already?

Seems like a high upside player. Will need at least a year by the looks of it.

Wonder if he and GJ will get along (east vs. west michigan).

I'm liking this draft more/more.

He might be in the mix right away at RT? Seems sort of a road grader type.

not sure, just think that starting three years as a tackle in college is pretty good - knocking him because his first year he was a DT seems silly.

by the end of this draft all the TT haters will be chipping in to buy him a lapdance lol

Only it has to be in Vegas and supplied by the dudes from 'Thunder from Down Under' 8-)

Thompson has drafted a lot of OL the last few year. I imagine we're not going to have many problems down the line at OL.

Hopefully we can get Barbre to be a player this year. If that happens, we're looking pretty tough up front.

its not a big rivalry

western vs. central is the big one

Lang played LT the last 2 years. Is he Clifton's eventual replacement?

We now have A.J., B.J. and T.J.

Clearly we have to draft PJ Hill now!

not

Fat, drunks are already abundant in the GB area :P

Gotcha - how many regional names do they come up with.... at least in WI we name universities by their cities.

sounds like he can play anywhere on the line, except maybe center

one thing i saw said he might be best inside

sounds like a classic TT linemen, he could play anywhere on the line

I believe in Wisconsin they are all part of the Univeisty of Wisconsin system, as opposed to MI where they are all separate (UM, MSU, EMU, CMU, WMU).

i know of northern, central, eastern and western. i don't think there is a southern michigan uni

and those are all pretty big universities (20,000+), except NMU (10,000)

FAN-DAMN-TASTIC! Another "need" pick. I've seen this guy a few times. He was impressive.

Well, it took quite a while but:

Draft Grade For Ted Thompson: A+

I read he could play center too. His versatility seems to be his biggest strength. He's probably a pretty good value at this point, I suppose.

I've been hoping for bigger guys up front. There is something wrong with Barbre if he can't beat out a rookie in his 4th year.
