I've got a hedge hog that has decided to take up residency under one of my out buildings. Its time for him to meet his maker.

You decide how.

There are 16 species of hedgehog in five genera, found through parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and New Zealand. There are no hedgehogs native to Australia, and no living species native to North America

Do you live near a zoo or something?

That was my thought. Thanks for the confirmation.

If you're going for anything over 4,500 miles I'd go with an ICBM. Check with your city clerk and find out about your local ordinances regarding ballistic missiles.

Happy hunting.

12 gauge bird shot - less accuracy required and much safer. The BB's won't carry for miles like a rifle or slug will.

Also, it's a lot more entertaining. Remind me though, what's the problem with the hedgehog?

Do you have a Mannlicher? If so, choose that. But make sure there is plenty of cushioning behind the hedge/ground hog, and don't shoot toward or under your house with it.

The problem with hedgehog/groundhog. is that he has started living under my outbuilding. I don't take kindly to squatters, therefore it must die.

For those worried about civilian casualties, I live out in the country. Neighbors are a quite a bit away. I would also try to take the shot from my deck so the trajectory is towards the ground.

any other questions?

I didn't realize how specific I should have made this poll. Would you like grain and shot size too?

The rifle choices are:

Savage 110 (30-06 with a 3-9 scope or iron sights)
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q215/butchammon/Savage110.jpg

Remington 700 (7mm mag with a 4-12 scope)
http://www.remington.com/images/products/firearms/centerfire/smsil_700bdl.jpg

The shot gun is:

Remington 870 Express (no scope improved cylinder choke)

The handgun is:

Ruger Nighthawk Bicentenial edition (single action, iron sights)

why do guns make people horny? Some guy is shooting a groundhog, next thing you know other guys are thinking about porn.

I know there were those magazines with pics of naked women with big boobs shooting semiautomatic weapons. It can't be just that naked women go well with anything, because I never saw any sandwich & titty magazines.

funny thing, I don't own a .22

I'm figuring on one shot should do him in. the expense of the one shell does not concern me. (on a side note, .357 mag rounds are damn expensive. I just bought a box of 50 for $35! .......and hard to find)

You could try a live trap. I remember my dad tried to catch one of these in a live trap when I was a kid, but the darn thing just refused to go in. He used to eat grass right in front of the door of the trap - almost like he was taunting my dad.

There is an area about 1/2 mile from my house where there are groundhogs out eating....sunning themselves all day long right on the grassy area on the side of the road. They are not even afraid of the cars going by and it's a busy area. Today I saw about 10 baby groundhogs sunning themselves there. This could get bad if that one on my deck is pregnant.

Groundhogs are highly intelligent, and are known to have computer skills far surpassing those of skunks and weasels. I suspect he has been tracking you, and your comments on here. He is likely tunneling from your outbuilding to the supports of your deck right now. I wouldn't step out there if I were you. How high is your deck? Hopefully it isn't a second floor deck!

it is a second story deck over my walkout basement. think he is gnawing on the support pillars? maybe i should install trip wires and razor wire around the base of my deck?

he is gonna slip up, and I'm gonna be there to take him out!

How about a government study? Maybe we could get you some stimulus dollars to study the habitat of the groundhog. We could get a few million to relocate him to a swamp near your most hated neighbor.

Very good point! Clearly this poor creature has been forced into this unnatural existence as L.W.'s guest/neighbor, most likely due to the encroachment of humans on his natural habitat. Any removal activity MUST be stopped, pending the outcome of the study. Just think how this study might impact the lives of similarly situation groundhogs through out the country! This could be a global problem.

Not a bad approach guys but I think we also should consider a reintroduction of a predator or two to more even things out. You must have killed all the badgers and large weasels in the area.

UPDATE:

Looks like I was the one to make the first mistake. I got ground hog fever. He came out of hiding today. I should have known better and went with the rifle. He was sitting about 75-80 yards out. Just didn't have the range with the shot gun. He now knows that I am out for blood. I think I nicked him with a b.b. maybe he has learned to move on and move out. if not, I will not make the same mistake twice. I've already got the 30/06 round waiting for him. He will not be lucky twice!!

Well, if they are "coming out" then you don't have to worry about them breeding. The hedgehogs will start having Pride parades on your lawn though. That will bring in Sam the Eagle to have protests of the parades to your house as well against those "wierdos". You'll need to inform the police so that way they can keep the two sides separated, so they'll send McGruff the Crime Dog. At that point, the local NBC news affiliate of Gary Gnu will be there to report on the whole thing likely trying to find some nugget of dirt about you and your family... who knew that hedgehogs could be such problems?

I still haven't seen him. We had some serious rain this weekend. maybe all the rain washed his carcus down the creek. or as it was this weekend....a river!

If he didn't die, I thinking he has decided that this ole redneck means business and decided to find another building to live under.

There are 4 steps from my basement to a door leading outside. The steps and a couple windows have their own little roof to them. Kinda hard to explain. Anyway, this roof is visible from my dining room on the main floor. The dining room has several windows that are pretty much floor to ceiling. So I walked into the kitchen/dining room today and that little *&%$ groundhog is laying there all sprawled out SUNNING HIMSELF ON THE ROOF!!

I knock on the window and it just looks at me!!!

I knock harder and it finally walks off the roof and back underneath the deck.

It would start so I pop the hood and there is a set of beedy eyes staring back at me. I grab the gun and he bangs a few times on the side of the truck ,we throw a few sticks at him. nothing. damn thing just sits there staring at us.
