When asked about why his former teammate Derrick Brooks hasn't found a team yet...

"I'll tell you the real reason,'' his friend Warren Sapp said over the weekend. "Because it's not the same for the veterans anymore. The NFL doesn't need us. In this NFL, the old vets don't factor in. The kids don't listen to nobody. Nobody! My last year in Oakland, I'd try to talk to some of the kids. Tommy Kelly, Terdell Sands. But they had no interest. I thought the ghosts in that building were so valuable, but none of the young guys cared. Once in a while, one of the old legends would come in the building, or make a trip. Jack Tatum would be around, and I'd say, 'You know who that dude is? You know how he played?' And the kids would be like, 'Nah, I don't care.'

"The game's different now. Look at Vince Young. Why wouldn't he listen to Kerry Collins? I'm sure Vince thinks, 'Nobody's been through what I'm going through. Nobody's been through my kind of pressure.' Are you kidding me! Kerry Collins, fifth pick in the draft, has all the ups and downs, gets benched, makes those racist comments, has the alcohol problems, moves from team to team, comes back, has success ... Vince Young should suck up all the knowledge Kerry Collins has to offer! There's no better role model for him.''

Interesting comments, for those people who said a team needs "veteren leadership" looks like a lot of the new players don't give a shit what the vets say...

Thoughts?

OR played every play until it was over, was it a cheap shot hell yeah, was it legal? hell yeah! Sorry I love Cliffy and was pissed at the hit but Sapp was a hell of a football player and was a stud, and the fact is he played that play until the end, he saw a guy to hit in legal play and hit him. He has BEEN THERE...all of us are ex, some not even, jocks in football or other contact sports where we never played for a job. This guy has.

This kind of discussion has been going on since people began to record their thoughts. You can find all kinds of evidence - I've seen some diaries and publications from the 20's - that each generation thinks the next generation is going to hell in a handbasket. Or a skinbasket!

I wonder first if when Sapp was a highly touted rookie he respectfully soaked up the wisdom of his football elders. My guess is that he didn't give a damn at the time.

I wonder second if, when Paul Hornung was a young star, he eagerly sought out sage advice from the old-timers while Hornung was out partying it up. I'd guess not then, either.

You better hope no one PMs Admin about that, you insensitive meanie.

We all know a generation of skinbaskets would do this country good, so I won't hold it against you, though.

As far as Sapp goes, a cheap shot is a cheap shot, legal or not. Hitting a guy just to hurt him, especially a guy you pay across from play-to-play, not only shows a lack of any kind of respect for that player, but for the way the game should be played, and gives an indication that you need to beat a guy by hurting him instead of outplaying him.

Thats my problem with it. Even when the trainers were running out on the field and Clifton was laying there and not moving. He was laughing and talking about it with his teammates. No concern for the health of a man whose career was nearly over. Screw him.

Summing up:

The thing I learned from this thread so far is that the posters on it generally still hold a lot of hate for Warren Sapp over the Chad Clifton 'cheap shot.

Was the thread introduced to monitor the 'hate meter' on our forum? If so then Id say it's working just fine. Could we move to responding to the real question' this thread introduces?

Do younger Pro's have respect and / or awe for team Vets and retired vet's these days and was that ever the case generally or othwerwise? Please feel free to restructure the question. :D

By the way I hated that shit shot Sapp put on Clifton. It damn near ended his career and has he ever been the same?

Buck, it's a good question, but you have to look at the younger players individually. Do the young Packers have this issue? I highly doubt it. I recall stories of Al & Chuck being teachers on the field. And the way the team is built supports that--think of the word "Packer People."

I think while the mood of this thread is certainly representative of the memory that we share of what Sapp did, the views that Sapp's young teammates simply didn't respect him on a personal level, may be valid. Would YOU want advice from Warren Sapp on the right way to play the game? (that's not a challenge, merely a question to ponder.) I know I wouldn't want his advice on much of anything. And he sucks at NFL Replay ads too.

Sapp is damned lucky Sherman didn't have his purse.

As it was I got the impression from how it sounded that Mike Sherman had used the phrase "chicken shit" the way others say "motherf*cker," as if he was pulling out the biggest gun in his swearing arsenal.

(I will always be a little embarrassed by that exchange between Sherman and Sapp. It was like the time my mom came outside and pulled the neighborhood bully off of me--the ass-whupping I had been getting was way less embarrassing than having my mom give a big stupid kid a public scolding.)

As far as the young guys, I really do believe that TT makes an effort to draft guys that love football and respect teammates. The callow and shallow may haunt Sapp's locker room, but the Green Bay Packer locker room is filled with Packer people by design.

Here's a cheap but fun shot at the Vikings:

Percy Harvin is Vikings People!

Okay, now that I've written that, watch some Packer rookie get arrested outside a strip club with a gun...

Or was that Cory Rodgers? Now there's some Packer people.

But if the guy coulda hung on to punts he might've been Packer people anyway.

I hardly felt embarrassed by Sherman's confronting Sapp. In fact, I felt damn proud that he was standing up for his player!

Yes, it WAS one of the best things Shermy every did, IMO.

The problem wasn't the hit on Clifton, the problem was his utter lack of concern for the man. If he had simply said he felt bad Clifton was hurt, but I play every play like its my last and I made a legal hit that unfortunately hurt someone....that would have been fine, I would defend him to this day.

BUT...."was it a legal hit...was there a flag on the play..." at the top of his lungs as if to justify the consequence...that was just stupid.

Sapp is an interesting dude. I hated the Cliffy hit as much as anyone, and I still can't forgive him for it. But at least publicly, Packer players, like Rivera, didn't call it a dirty hit, and it's worth noting Sapp hit Cliffy straight up -- he didn't cut his knees or some crap like that. So the Cliffy hit doesn't wipe out everything Sapp did -- he played tough and hard.

A little historical perspective -- Sapp's been far less of an ass about the Cliffy hit than Chuck Bednarik was about the lick he put on Gifford -- dude used to do speeches where he'd start off with the lights out and say crap like "that's what Gifford saw after I hit him."

Ah, screw it, they're both asshats.
