I'm sure the campaign will be effective. - "Are they calling me a whale? I'll show them! I'll stop eating meat, go Vegan and start donating money to animal causes. I'll change my entire lifestyle because they ridiculed me!"

I imagine the diets of obese people contain just a relatively small proportion of animal flesh. They probably eat a high amount of processed sweets and pastas which truly add on the weight.

It is likely that fruits and vegetables are just a small proportion of their diets.

There are plenty of fat vegetarians as well. It's healthier to be a thin carnivore than a fat vegetarian, but peta never lets facts get in the way of a publicity stunt.
