John "Nellie" Nelson, the assistant football coach of Pacific Lutheran University, died this past week at age 44.

He was a very inspirational assistant football coach at PLU, a division III school. Confined to a wheelchair because of the rare disease of Arthrogryposis, he not only graduated from PLU but became an assistant football coach. He was a true student of the game.

I personally had the chance to meet him as my daughter is a senior at PLU. A big Seahawks fan, he attended the Packers-Seahawk game last season which I also attended. Talking with him during halftime, it was amazing to listen to him give an analysis of the game's first half. He had a keen insight into football.
