It's wierd watchng Cutler and thinking "get rid of it, the pressures coming". Normally I'm hoping he gets crushed. Just strange rooting for them.

agreed. first time that i ever remember cheering for the bears.

I'm about ready to start singing Bear Down.

the Pack was still figuring things out when we played them early on. it might be a different game today. hopefully it would be if the coaches learned anything.

In Favre's defense, it's been a tough game and he's not making the big mistake. When the Viking offense is off, it looks like the Packer offense when they're off.

Rice, Peterson, Shiancoe, Barrian and Harvin are a good group. They're going to have to open it up. I picture Lovie dialing up some pressure at some point. Favre might find himself in trouble here tonight.

RashanGary
12-28-2009, 09:38 PM
This is a huge game for the Vikings. They're going to pull out all stops. Favre better pray for pass protection because the Bears, at some point, are going to be coming hard.

earlier in the year when you blitzed Favre he made you pay; tonight he's missed some great opportunities with poor passes. Cost them some huge plays. He looks like he's starting to get in a bit of a groove now

RashanGary

After the Seahawk game another reporter said, "boy, with Tausher back, you've sure gotten our offensive woe's fixed".

Rodgers responded by saying something like, "well, our offensive philosophy has really helped keep defenses vanilla. With Finley we've been going more 4 wide and defenses can either pressure or play coverage, it's a little simpler".

Watching the Vikings here in the 2nd half, they're spreading it out. The Bears are being forced to show their hand, just like Rodgers is saying he likes here.

Favre looks hot. He has the eye of the tiger right now. Bears offense can punch back, but at some point their defense is going to have to make a play too.

He is a great player. He had a decent rookie year. I drafted him last year in my only fantasy draft ever, but he got injured and wasn't really right.

Now he's got a good QB, he's healthy and he's got a little experience in the offense. He's a talented player, for sure. Great hands.

Vikings have really had the Bears off balance. The Bears keep rushing with lane integrity to stop the run and that is leaving Favre with a ton of time.

Finally they rush up field and get a sack.

I know what he's trying to do, he's trying not to let the bad move get to him so he's laughing but it jsut shows immaturity too.

That was just a dumb ass throw. It's not funny, not at all. WE have a young QB too and our guy never makes that throw, not once all season.

Cutler with the Bears makes me nervous. He's a dumbass hence the INT totals this year, but he makes some throws that nobody else can make. If they get a coach who can reign him in he could be a pain for us for many years. Thank god they don't have any high picks this year to help fill holes.

On 3rd and a long two Favre had Sydney Rice man on man versus a weak CB with no safety help

All this talk of Chilly not liking Favre to audible; MN stacks the line against a run yet they run and it fails.

That CB was back pedaling on Rice like he was going to give him 5-10 yards

I wonder if the muck from last week makes Favre less likely to audible, or I wonder if Chilly has told him to stop

That's true. Some of the throws he's made tonight, he's had moments of spectacular.

He's also in a brand new offense. I know he could come back next season and tear it up. He does have talent. Rocket arm with good accuracy.

haha. What a game

When the Vikings spread out the Bears, Favre is just picking them apart though. Rodgers said this week that is what has helped him. Favre seems to thrive under it too.

When you spread defenses out, there is only so much they can do. It becomes predictable for a smart QB. Favre and Rodgers both seem to thrive in the 4 wide. Childress keeps trying to reign him into the heavy packages, but Favre thrives when it's spread out.

I hate to say it but it is a tough call. I love Jennings but I've been slightly disapointed with him this year. Rice has him in a lot of categories, most obvious is size. Rice makes great use of that along with leaping ability and body control to make some plays Jennings cannot. Jennings is more accomplished. I hate to say Rice is better... so I won't.

Minnesota is making it really, really tough on themselves. They're aging a little at some important positions and now they're going to fight to the very end with no break and maybe no bye.

Next week against the Giants, on a short week, they're going to have to come out against a very bitter, angry team that has something to prove, even if it's just pride. I wouldn't want to be in a pride match against NY.

Then if things go the way they look, they'll be playing Dallas at home with no bye week, then Philly on the road, then the Saints on the road. When the Vikings don't have the noise advantage of that crazy dome, they just don't play nearly as well.

Early in the season everything was going the Vikings way. Now, I don't know if they have any better of a shot than we do.

This was really a huge loss for the Vikings. With home field and the bye, they had a great chance to make it to the NFC Champ game and from there, a couple ST's bounces, a little luck and bam, champion.

The Vikings have lost 4 road games now and none of the teams they lost to are as good as the Eagles or Saints (teams they'll have to go on the road against in the playoffs).

Vikings are similar to the Packers. Good team, very good team. Not quite a champion though.

Yes, since the Eagles currently have a conference record of 9-2 with one conference game to play, while the Vikings have a conference record of 8-3 with one conference game to play. If the Eagles win, it doesn't matter what the Vikings do, since Minnesota can't get to 10 conference wins. If Philly loses, however, the Cowboys would win the NFC East which would give the Vikings the bye with a win over the Giants. If Philly loses, Arizona loses, and Minnesota loses the Cowboys would get a bye with a 9-3 conference record.

If the Cowboys win, Minnesota loses, and Arizona wins then Arizona and Dallas would be tied at 11-5 with 9-3 conference records, and the next tiebreaker is common games winning percentage, which I'm not sure about.

Still a very good team, just like I think the Packers are a very good team. I don't think the Vikings are a champion though. Favre is good enough, but their team has some weak links on the OL and a few issues in the back seven of their defense as well as spotty coverage units.

You know Rodgers said something yesterday that I think really applied to this. The Vikings offense, when it's struggling, looks a lot like the Packers offense struggling with pressure causing problems.

Rodgers said by spreading it out, it makes the defense more "vanilla". I think a smart QB who's in tune wiht his offense knows there is only so much a defense can do when there are 4 or 5 wide receivers. Both Favre and Rodgers are smart QB's. When the offense is in a more traditional set, defenses can really disguise coverages and that killed Rodgers early in the season. It was killing Favre early in this game.

When they spread it out with good weapons and a really smart QB, I think it becomes very hard for a defense to stop. And I agree, the Vikings are better off spread 4 wide (maybe Shiancoe as the 4th) and Peterson in the backfied. Favre was picking them apart when he had it spread out.

Well, it's a well known fact that it's much more important in the playoffs to be "getting hot at the right time" than to "be the best team". Hot teams beat better teams in the playoffs all the time. One thing that's weird about the NFC this year is the relative paucity of hot teams at this time of year. Certainly, neither the Saints nor the Vikings are hot at this point.

Tyrone Bigguns
12-28-2009, 11:47 PM
Your definition of hot is a bit stringent. Iggles are hot. Packers are hot. Dallas if they win are hot. Pats are hot. Colts are hot.

The idea is to get hot at the playoffs...not to be hot b4. Cards are a perfect example. They weren't hot b4.

After the Eagles, it's a real cluster. New Orleans is good and they get that bye/home field in the dome. That advantage alone gives them a huge edge.

Neither team has a dominant OL anymore; GB's is probably weaker. I think both teams create matchup problems when they spread things out. Without Al Harris it becomes harder for GB to defend that set. But I still think the Vikings coaching staff thinks it should be using the run to set up the pass. I'm not sure the OL is dominant enough to go with that mojo.

So Under what scenario(s) could the Packers end up playing the Vikes?

If the Eagles beat the Cowboys, Giants beat the Vikings, and Cards beat us then we play the Vikings. Not sure about other scenarios ,but I know that one.

I think that's the only way we play the Vikings. Right now, it's very likely we play the Cardinals.

If we win, we play the Cardinals guaranteed.

The Vikes play at noon, while the Cards/Pack and Eagles/Cowboys play simultaneous late games.

If the Vikings win at noon, the Packers/Cards rematch is assured, so that would make the Packers/Cards late game totally meaningless.

If the Giants beat the Vikes at noon, then the Cards have something very meaningful to play for. They then will have a shot at the 2 seed and a bye with a win (and a Dallas win, who plays at the same time). The Pack would play the Cowboys in the first round in that scenario. If the Eagles beat the Cowboys (and the Giants win at noon), then the Pack would face the Vikes in round 1 (assuming a Packer loss in their late game).

There's no scenario in which the Pack faces the Eagles (or the Saints obviously) in the first round whatsoever.

In a nutshell, if the Giants beat the Vikes at noon, then a Packers/Vikes first round game becomes a pretty reasonable scenario, as both the Cardinals and Eagles will be simultaneously playing for a possible bye in the late games (as would the Cowboys, but they'd need both a win and a Packer win).

The Packers are the only team (other than the Giants of course) with little to nothing on the line in terms of seeding going into the week. The Vikings game will determine if the Cards/Packers game means anything - to the Cards.

Cowboys can still get a bye yet as well.

:-/
I'm not sure what that means but the Cowboys can clinch the division with a win over the Eagles. That coupled with losses by the Cardinals and the Vikings will get them a bye.

That was one heck of a sentence still, yet , as well...

The Giants are not happy with how their season has gone. They have some pride. They've taken a whole week of NY media pounding.

The Vikings have a short week. They played a physical overtime game against the Bears.

The Giants are going to come in and try to punch Minny in the mouth. It's games like this, when teams are fatigued, that injuries become even more of a concern.

The Vikings are going to have a grudge match for themselves next Sunday at Noon. Best case, they preserve their bye. Most likely they don't get the bye but worst case, they get their asses kicked, get warn down even more and have to go on the road where they've already lost to 3 non playoff teams.

Yup. Good point about the Vikes and fatigue. They sure look sapped of energy at this point, and what they had, they may well have spent in the second half last night. They will have their first playoff game at home regardless of what happens this week though.
