Defensive Coordinators :
2009 - Dom Capers
2006/08 - Bob Sanders
2005 - Jim Bates
2004 - Bob Slowik
2002/03 - Ed Donatell

Thought all you packerrats might be interested in the comparison at this point in the season. The yards per rush and quarterback rating really stands out for this year.

Also, the QB rating in Slowik's year as coordinator was 99.16! Holy crap!

this year's is much better. look at the time on the field...a lot less. better offense is letting them get more rest. wonder what the turn-over/take-away situation was for those years.

Slowik was averaging giving up a 100 QB passer rating per game? Jaysus.

And we couldn't stop the run either (4.6 yards/carry).

I know he was part of the 4th and 26 debacle, but Ed Donatell doesn't get enough credit. He was a credible D Coord. And I think he is currently out of a job.

Injuries killed Sanders last year, but he had a good one in 2007 at 18.2 points a game. And that D carried the team for the first Quarter to Half of the season.

And from the things we should have known department, having three DTs on the field at one time (Jolly, Pickett, Jenkins) makes it hard to run the football.

Didn't it come out afterwards that Donatell really had a different play called on 4th and 26, something involving more pressure on McNabb, and that Shermy overruled him and forced them to play a quarters defense? Or am I just imagining that happened because it's more convenient to blame one person for the entire debacle?

That was the rumor but I am not aware that it led anywhere or was ever confirmed.

I can't count the number of times that I tried to explain to people that a 3-4 alignment is a schematically superior run defense to a typical 4-3 (the 46 variation absolutely excels though).

There was a lot of panic about our run D back in the spring. Really it was our pass D, and especially pressure, that was the most concerning (the 3-4 alignment has no pressure/coverage advantages over a 4-3). Most teams that convert from a 4-3 to a 3-4 dramatically improve at run defense, however most also decline a little at bringing pressure.

McCarthy covered this a bit in his early introduce Dom Capers introduction. That he felt there were only two gaps to attack a 3-4 run D versus the 3 available from a 4-3. But I think everyone thinks of the trade off of one D lineman for a linebacker as getting smaller and less physical.

What is easy to forget, is that you gain 2 bigger bodies (essentially 3 technique tackles) on the line rather than one DT and one DE.

The defense always had talent. Finally a dc put the players in position to make plays.
