Packers cornerback Al Harris, who is coming off knee surgery, has a bonus in March. Expect the Packers to ask him to delay that bonus until he can prove he's healthy. If not, maybe the Packers think about cutting him.

Why would the Packers cut the man over the roster bonus? Unless the medical prognosis is bad or he is refusing to allow himself to be evaluated, his return makes him a decent value at a position of need. I don't remember its value, but Harris' last contract bump was not a huge financial commitment.

I think Bedard and Silverstein have had Thompson cutting half the starting roster over salary, like this was 1995 all over again. Now, non-salary cap rules may change the way the team chooses to deal with this, but I doubt they flat cut him unless they are protected from losing him.

If I recall correctly, and I think I do, when Harris signed that last extension (some GM named Thompson did the deal), the public idea was that the last couple years were fairly inexpensive and that both sides saw Al as ending his career as a nickel back.

Once again, the JSO has to try to create news. How about some news of where negotiations are or aren't at for a new CBA? How about a look at the team's strengths and weaknesses, to get an eye for free agency and the draft? How about who might be free agents if there's no CBA in place soon? How about possible trades around the league (are the Bears really thinking about dumping Cutler?)

It simply seems like an offhand thought, with little to no research on the savings or cost of the move. He doesn't even mention the amount of the bonus, which would be the only key to the move, unless his healthy return is in question. In either case, where is the foundation of this story?

we missed al harris desperately this season, tramon is still a pretty big step below al, and everyone behind williams is about 5 steps below al

We, like everybody else, will have an infinite amount of cap room by the time this roster bonus is due. The only economic concern would be "do they have the cash on hand to pay the bonus", but considering that the Packers are one of the more profitable NFL teams, they can probably afford it.

His agent would have a whole lot more credibility on what the Packer plan to do if his name was Mike McCarthy instead of Mike McCartney.

One of the Packer writers actually did make a good point in a blog about the amount of money that it seems will be spent on the linebacking position this year. I think it may have been in the Press Gazette. Interesting numbers and makes you wonder if there will be room to keep Kampman at what they'd have to tender...

When your agent has to make a comment about you not having to take a pay cut, I don't think that's necessarily a good sign.
