I've got the draft fever. I know these things are impossible to predict, but it' fun, so what the hell. . .

Packers Trade their 1st round pick for a 2nd and 3rd #38 and #70

D2 - Ryan Matthews - RB - Fresno State - One of my favorite players in this whole draft. Matthews is is a dynamite runner, showing the ability to break tackles, make defenders miss and run for daylight. Matthews would start out backing up Ryan Grant, but by the end of the year, everyone will know who our star RB is.

D2 – Rodger Saffold – OT – UI – 3.5 year starter at LT, Saffold held up great against big 10 competition. He was said to be the best player at the EW Shrine Game, then had a great combine. Good experience, great athleticism, hard worker. Seems like a great pick.

D3 – Koa Misi – OLB – Utes – A very complete OLB prospect that can rush the passer, drop into coverage and play the run. Misi would immediately add great depth to our OLB group. I think Brad Jones has a shot, but it would be nice to have two good prospects at such an important position

D3 - Alex Carrington - DE - ASU - The absolute prototype 3-4 DE prospect, Carrington is great against the run and a solid pass rusher. Carrington spends his first year learning the ropes and provides insurance in case Jenkins leaves next year in UFA or if Jolly continues to have off the field issues.

D4 – Javier Arenas – CB – Alabama – Arenas is a great punt and kick returner. He's short in stature, but is a good tackler and was a really good zone corner in college. Could be a dynamite special teams player and solid nickle back for several years in the NFL.

D5 - Alterraun Verner - CB - UCLA - An instinctive, natural zone player and reliable tackler, Verner projects well into our zone defense. I think he might be a slightly better corner prospect than Arenas because of his size, but Arenas is so damn electric as a returner, I took him first.

D5 – Kurt Coleman – SS – OSU – Lacking great size, Coleman has everything else. Just football, he's one of the best secondary players in the draft, but there is a risk with a smaller safety not holding up. He goes in the 5th round, at the very least is a good ST's player and reliable backup safety. He's always going to do his job well. In college he did it at the highest level.

D6 - Brent Bowden - P - VT - A well rounded punter, Bowden has a big leg, good touch, a quick get off, has developed consistency as a senior and is a good holder.

D7 -Michah Johnson - ILB - Kentucky - Injury concerns and a deep draft drop this quality ILB to the Packers. He'll immediately add competition to the group and maybe one day start.

Gotta say I am really jumping on the Ryan Mathews band wagon lately. I like the kid a lot and he looks like he could be a Steven Jackson type feature back. There are more obvious needs but I would not be disapointed if Mathews was our first pick.

Ryan Matthews and Jerry Hughes are two guys that I'm liking the more I read about them and see them. Ditto for Best.

I think the Iowa LT many were hoping for is going top 10

Like the draft but don't see Matthews falling out of the 1st round. Actually think he might be the first RB taken over CJ Spiller.

isn't mathews exactly like ryan grant?

same build, same type of running style, etc?

if we get another back then i would want him to be like a spiller/mcCluster/best type of back. a change of pace back

if we took mathews then i would want TT to turn around and trade grant for some picks because two of the same guy just doesn't do it for me

Agreed. Mathews is to much like Grant for me. I would rather get a running back like Dexter McCluster who at least besides being a 3rd down scatback would greatly help out our beleaguered special teams.

If we don't go that route, someone like LeGarrette Blount in the later rounds would be a good pick IMO, since he would provide that power/smashmouth type player that we need, especially at the goal line.

Its OK Fred. Someone was posting with hubby's account over at Deadspin earlier this week. It probably happens more often than we think. It would account for my post count.

I don't think Ryan Grant is a good comparison for Ryan Matthews. Matthews is really good after contact. He's also has more wiggle in the open field. The only real comparison is their straight-line speed. Both Grant and Matthews are very fast.

I'd compare Matthews to Tiki Barbre without the ball security issues. Maybe Shaun Alexander. Maybe DeAngelo Williams. Guys who can/could make guys miss and break tackles. Grant is damn solid, but he's not a difference maker. He gets what's blocked and not much more.

Ryan Matthews is really tough to tackle. He can make you miss, bounce off of you and run through you. You can hit him, but his feet are always under him. You think he's down and he finds a way to escape for a 60 yd TD. Guy is fast.

Just my opinion, I think he's damn near as good as Adrian Peterson. I think he's a star. I like him a lot more than Spiller.

I would not say Grant has very good speed. Perhaps he is slightly better than average for his size (215-220) but overall, he's average for an NFL RB. I put Matthews in that same category. Speed isn't everything, obviously. Matthews' hands are as big a question mark as Grant's IMO. Can't argue with the kid's productivity, but I agree with the notion that he is similar to Grant in terms of what he offers. He very likely IS better than Grant, but he's not a gamebreaking RB like Spiller, and there are questions in terms of his ability to produce out of the backfield as a receiver at the next level.

IMO, we NEED a RB who is a legitimate threat in the passing game who can give the defense something to think about on 2nd and 8 or 3rd and 5. While I'm not high on Grant, he's capable as a between the tackles runner when the OL has their shit together. If we are going to get a RB in the first round, he needs to be a dynamic receiving threat.

She pretends to barely pay attention, but it could be a ruse to lure me into a false sense of security.
