Thompson lost a vice-president of player personnel, John Schneider, to the Seahawks right after the season. Scott McCloughan, a Ted Thompson friend is available. He had been leading the 49ers draft prep until very recently. Should Thompson snap him up? Even just to keep him away from other teams?

McCloughan recently left the 49ers under somewhat odd circumstances. No one knows if he was fired for cause, released from his contract, or something in between. We only know that he isn't going to be there anymore and he has said he has said he did not contemplate resigning.

Thompson seemed to suggest no to Kevin Seifert, ESPN blog guy. What do you think?

Sounds like they are set until after the draft. No reason to shake things up right in the middle of the process.

After the draft, assuming it doesn't turn out that he's a pedophile or something, they can consider their options if he's unemployed. Right now, he hasn't even technically been let go yet from the sound of it.

I would guess that due to the upcoming draft, that this guy from the 49ers wouldn't be allowed to sign with another team until after the draft - because he probably knows the direction the 49ers might be going draft wise. Assuming he's done with the 49ers prior to the draft.

An excellent question, but one that will cost them as they will need to keep paying his salary until they negotiate an end. That could be why they seem to be dragging their heels, to avoid having to make a deal until after the draft, when McCloughan's leverage is lower.

Heard he was going to leave after the draft but left the team officially today.

Might not hurt just to get another source of info on the draft and what the 49ers are going to do. My best guess is McCloughan lost his job by landing a few too many divas like Davis and Crabtree. But that is speculation only. As of now, the HC doesn't seem to have any more juice as one of McCloughan's lieutenants is acting GM now.

In the event of a tie does Admin Joe make the call?

I'd have a hard time believing that with they way that duo looked last year.

I don't think him leaving the 49ers had anything to do with the talent he brought in.

York said the reason McCloughan is no longer the team's general manager was a private personnel issue. He said director of player personnel Trent Baalke will take over matters related to next month's NFL Draft.

York also said McCloughan, likely under terms of his contract, doesn't have the ability to go to another team before this year's draft.

So it is clear he got paid. But other than the "personnel" issue was "personal", there is still no indication why the split happened. But I guess he won't be divulging any information to the Packers prior to the draft. Which only makes sense, otherwise, someone else has the drop on them.

A personal issue? Did he have porn on his work computer? Did he come to work drunk or high? Did he belch in front of his boss? Weird.

Some articles alluded to comments from him about losing and now again realizing the importance of family. This might be strictly a choice based on the needs of his family. Comments from several have been that they expect him back in the NFL "at some point". I suspect he may be gone for a while until whatever it is that has caused this decision is somewhat resolved.
