ND Official Mock 1.0
1. Rams – Sam Bradford, QB Oklahoma
The rams have needed to look to their future from the start of the offseason, and that future has to be a QB. I’m not big on Sam Bradford, never a fan of a guy who misses large portions of a season due to injury right before the draft, but from everything I have read, Bradford is the guy.
2. Lions – Russell Okung – OT Oklahoma State
The Lions have made some off season moves to bolster their Defense. They drafted Stafford last year, and he looked like he can definitely play. They need an Offensive Line, and a guy who is going to protect Stafford for years, Okung is the man.
3. Buccaneers – Ndamukong Suh, DT Nebraska
It’s beginning to look like the Big 12 in here. The Buccaneers can go in any number of directions. They have their QB of the future in Freeman, but they have a horrible defense. What turned the Bucs around in the ‘90’s? Warren Sapp…Suh is the same type, if not better than Sapp was coming out of college, and can be an instant force for the Buccaneers.
4. Redskins – Jimmy Clausen, QB Notre Dame
Yes, I have a love affair with Notre Dame QB’s. I still think Brady Quinn can be a player, and I think Jimmy Clausen can be just as much a player as I thought Quinn would be coming out. If the Redskins are smart, they approach this like Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers, sit him, let him learn and grow.
5. Chiefs – Bryan Bulaga, OT Iowa
The Chiefs are another team that could go in any direction. Eric Berry? Probably a draft room conversation. But, the Chiefs gave up 42 sacks last year, and they recently signed Thomas Jones, and Brandon Albert projects as a better Right Tackle than Left Tackle. Bryan Bulaga has been flying up the charts, and shows the talent and potential to be a very good Left Tackle for the future. If the Chiefs can improve their OL, their offense becomes much more dangerous.
6. Seahawks – Gerald McCoy, DT Oklahoma
Another team that could go in any direction, so you take the best player available. The Seahawks Defense in 2009 was, well laughable. New Head Coach Pete Carroll believes in having a great defense, and it will start here.
7. Browns – Eric Berry, S Tennessee
What couldn’t the Browns use on their team? Probably anything but Left Tackle! If Clausen or Bradford happen to slip, I think they need to put some serious thought into taking them. If not, they take the best player on the board, and that player right now is Eric Berry. Defensive Line or Linebacker could be a thought, but there is nobody worthy of this pick at those positions.
8. Raiders – Bruce Campbell, OT Maryland
I like Bruce Campbell a lot, around the bottom of the 1st round. But this is Al Davis. Could Donavan McNabb be coming to Oakland? If he is, and they still own this pick, it could be more of a reason for Davis to take an offensive lineman to try to bolster that unit. Campbell has freakish potential, hopefully the Raiders aren’t a curse.
9. Bills – Trent Williams, OT Oklahoma
The Bills are another team that could go in any direction, and it would instantly help the team in some way. When you are a franchise that needs some major improvements, the best place to start is on the offensive or defensive lines. Trent Williams was considered a top 5 pick a month ago. Why he’s slipped I have no idea, but Williams misfortune is the Bills fortune.
10. Jaguars – Dez Bryant, WR Oklahoma State
The Jags signed Aaron Kampman, meaning they can look elsewhere round 1. Will they still look for another DE? Probably at some point. Harvey has not done anything since being drafted high out of Florida, and nobody knows how Kampman will recover…however if I have a hunch, Kampy will have a strong 2010 season. The one area on offense the Jags could use a boost it would be at WR. Unfortunately the Jags have spent many high picks on the position, so hopefully this one finally turns out.
11. Broncos – Rolando McClain, ILB Alabama
People still have the Broncos going with Dan Williams, I think it’s a possibility, but I think Denver will look for another NT later now that they signed Jamal Williams. I do believe they will still address their Defense, and take the best LB they can take, and McClain is that guy for them. He’s a perfect fit for their 3-4 defense.
12. Dolphins – Jason Pierre-Paul, OLB USF
Joey Porter is gone, so who is left at OLB? 36 year old Jason Taylor. They signed Karlos Dansby in the offseason, bringing in a high potential guy like Piere-Paul could be just what Bill Parcells is looking for. Parcells loves big athletic guys for the OLB position, which is exactly who he gets.
13. 49ers – Joe Haden, CB Florida
49ers could go in a number of directions, but Joe Haden makes the most sense. With Haden across from Spencer, that gives them a huge boost in the defensive backfield. Bolstering their DL, LB, WR and even another QB in the later rounds will move the 49ers forwards in a very pathetic division.
14. Seahawks – C.J. Spiller, RB Clemson
The Seahawks have been looking for the answer at RB since Shaun Alexander was released. C.J. Spiller has star potential written all over him. He alone could help turn the Seahawk offensive around and make it more explosive.
15. Giants – Sean Witherspoon, LB Missouri
When I think of the New York Giants, all I think of is their defense. For some reason, I don’t see them going in any other direction other than defense though, especially right now. I think Witherspoon is the man, even though Derrick Morgan and Dan Williams might come into discussions if this plays out this way. They have players on the DL, and an upgrade at LB is perfect for their needs.
16. Titans – Derrick Morgan, DE Georgia Tech
This could play out in any number of directions. They have lost their best 2 Defensive Line man the past 2 years, and haven’t done too much to upgrade. Derrick Morgan and Dan Williams will be discussed. This is like dream world for Tennessee to have these 2 choices sitting in front of them. They need a pass rush, so taking Derrick Morgan is the better choice of the 2 for them, and they take him at number 16.
17. 49ers – Anthony Davis, OT Rutgers
49ers are sitting in perfect position at this point. They have a wide range of selections they could go with. Taylor Mays at Safety, Anthony Davis at Tackle, Brandon Graham at OLB, and even thoughts of maybe Tim Tebow at QB? The answer is simple. They got their CB with their first pick, now they upgrade their offense with a very good OT in Anthony Davis. Davis is actually one of my favorites for no real reason at OT in this draft. I think he has the talent to start right now, and the potential to be a All-Pro in the future.
18. Steelers – Kyle Wilson, CB Boise State
2009 was without question a huge disappointment for all of Pittsburgh. This is the Steelers, and when you’re down, you improve your defense. The Steelers D was shreded by many teams last year through the air. Kyle Wilson is a very underrated CB, and will be a perfect fit for the Steelers.
19. Falcons – Brandon Graham, DE Michigan
The Falcons need an upgrade in the pass rush area. Jamaal Anderson has been a huge bust, and Brandon can step in and start day 1 most likely. Coach Smith loves pass rushers, I don’t think there is any other direction than Graham at number 19.
20. Texans – Earl Thomas, S Texas
Houston has one goal, beat Indianapolis. One way to do that is to bolster your team with the best Defensive Backs possible. Earl Thomas is a great fit for the Texans Defense, and will be a home town favorite.
21. Bengals – Jermaine Gresham, TE Oklahoma
Staying Defensive for the Bengals is probably a huge possibility here, but the chance to upgrade their offense even more and getting themselves a great TE to help Palmer might be too great to pass up. If the Bengals integrate a good TE into that offense, they could be hard to stop.
22. Patriots – Sergio Kindle, OLB Texas
Out of the ordinary for Coach Belichick in taking an OLB so high, but his defense was weak last year, and adding another crazy athletic LB might be too great for him to pass up. Their defense is young, but adding a few pieces here and there could serge that defense back to the top very quickly.
23. Packers – Taylor Mays, S USC
One thing is for sure, Ted Thompson never does what you expect him to do. Most would expect him to take the best offensive lineman in the draft right here. Thompson and Coach McCarthy have put a premium on upgrading their defense. Their defense got shreded by Arizona in the playoffs. Mays won’t help right now in pass covereage, but he’s crazy fast, and might just learn how to cover people. Plus, Taylor Mays is a “Packer Person”. His best friend is Clay Matthews, and has even spent a few days this offseason with Matthews up in Green Bay.
24. Eagles – Ryan Matthews, RB Fresno State
Brian Westbrook is gone, leaving a guy entering his second year in the NFL. McNabb might be gone, so the focus will be to surround Kevin Kolb with as much talent as possible in order to increase his chances of being successful. Ryan Matthews is a very underrated RB in this draft. He reminds me a lot of Steven Jackson of St. Louis. He can run over you or past you. Great pick for the Eagles.
25. Ravens – Dan Williams, DT Tennessee
The fact that Dan Williams has fallen from top 20 isn’t really a shock since you run into teams that run different defenses, and have DT in place. This is a perfect fit, and a perfect team for Dan Williams. He could play some NT, and some DE if needed, but his spot will be NT to help bolster that DL.
26. Cardinals – Golden Tate, WR Notre Dame
What a horrible offseason for the Cardinals. Don’t worry, you play in the NFC West. You’re going to have a new QB in Arizona, surround him with weapons. If there are no top tier Tackles left, you look elsewhere. Golden Tate can come in and be an instant threat on offense as your #3 WR. He can play WR, RB, QB, and even KR/PR. If you want some wildcat, Tate can go in at QB. He can run reverses, and probably run past any LB or S that will cover him in the slot.
27. Cowboys – Mike Iupati, G Idaho
This is one team that is hard to choose, because they are pretty solid across the board. The one area they are starting to need an influx of talent, is on the Offensive Line. Iupati can play Guard or Tackle, and at least be a solid backup his first few years as he learns the system.
28. Chargers – Brian Price, DT UCLA
The Chargers have taken a few hits on their DL. While RB might be a choice here to help Sproles, Price is too high of a quality pick to pass up. Price might be a bit undersized for NT in the 3-4, but he could put on weight as he is a very big wide body guy. He could help more by being able to play all 3 positions on the DL.
29. Jets - Jared Odrick, DE/DT Penn St.
What a great offseason for the Jets. Cromartie at CB, Tomlinson at RB, and now a pretty good DL guy to throw on that already sound defense. Coach Ryan must be making deals with the devil! The Jets defense is going to be tough to get past, the only hope is that they don’t find weapons for Sanchez as they are still a couple players away from being good on offense.
30. Vikings – Maurkice Pouncey, C/G Florida
Vikings are feeling good and rightfully so. If Favre comes back, they’ll be in line to make a strong run again in the NFC. Pouncey is an instant starter at RG, which is an instant upgrade on their running game. If they can keep AP healthy and running hard all season long, and keep Favre on his feet, watch out.
31. Colts – Charles Brown, OT USC
For the team that has everything, you take the best player you need. Offensive Line seems to be an on going saga for the Colts. I think every year I put OL as a pick for them, and usually they don’t take one, so count that as another year for me. I believe the Colts SHOULD go Defensively, but will go Offensively with this pick.
32. Saints – Everson Griffen, DE USC
For as much as the Saints knocked Brett Favre around in the NFC Championship Game, you wouldn’t think they’d be looking for a DE, but that is exactly what the Saints are looking for, and get a bargin with Griffen at number 32.
1. Rams – Sam Bradford, QB Oklahoma
