Steelers management is sending a message to Big Ben and the rest of the team: Get your act together if you want to play here. They're not going to let the Steelers turn into another Cincinnati.

So....why is Big Ben still on the team?

Yikes. What did Holmes do to earn his ticket out? And if you really wanted to drive the message home, why trade him to the Jets? Why not the Browns?

Because the Steelers know you never trade within the division

So....why is Big Ben still on the team?

Why are big companies bailed out by the government while hundreds of smaller companies are allowed to fail?

Big Ben is "too big to fail."

Good point. The truth is, players are not treated equally.

If you're Spencer Havner, your possible screw up could cost you your job. The team has certain expectations for its players, etc. etc.

If you're the star QB or wide receiver or whatever, your team understands that you are working through some issues and they will stand by you so you can get the help you need to get your life back on track.

Its not just star versus also ran. Holmes was the best WR on the Steelers last year. But their public behavior rap sheets are not equal.

Roethlisberger: 1 civil case of sexual assault, 1 possible/pending criminal case of sexual assault, 1 motorcycle versus sedan wreck, reported (mostly rumored) cases of acting like entitled douchebag in public

Holmes: 2 time drug policy offender (1 game team suspension for 1st charge, 4 game suspension for 2nd), 1 charge hitting mother of his child, 1 charge public disorderliness, 1 charge of assault (non-sexual) in nightclub, 1 charge of Twitter idiocy by predicting a "wake and bake", having nude photos posted on internet

Meet the New Bengals. Add it up, plus the fact that Santonio is far more replaceable at WR than the QB, bingo, you get to be the example.

But Holmes was the team's star receiver. Kind of. At least he was a Super Bowl MVP; whether he was consistently as good as that is another story. I think what makes the biggest difference in how teams treat particular players boils down to this: star players who play at hard to replace positions tend to get a longer leash than more replaceable positions (clearly a WR is more replaceable than QB). The other difference between BR and SH is that Rothligsburger is the face of the franchise. Maybe at some point, if he continues to screw up, that unique status starts to work against him, but for now exiling Santonio Holmes is not going to alienate your fan base whereas getting rid of Big Ben probably would.

I didn't mean to say that Holmes was chopped liver, just that he would be viewed as less of a loss relative to Big Ben. That there is a double standard depending upon your perceived value is pretty clear, where Holmes' value is at is up for debate.

Given the likelihood of him getting suspended for a long time/indefinitely, I'd say his value is significantly lowered. If Big Ben was to the point that his next offense might put him at risk of a year-long suspension, would they trade him or just put a really tight leash on him?

Wouldnt really call 20 year old girls underage. I mean when you meet a girl in a bar you assume she was atleast 21.

for those who think a 5th was pretty cheap for holmes, word came out yesterday that the steelers were ready to cut him if they couldn't find a trade partner

so i guess a little something is better then nothing
