There should probably be a medal for any of the eastern time zone 'Rats who watch the whole game. Then again, who doesn't want to stay up until 1:00 A.M. to watch 3rd stringers?
Things to watch:
LG battle: Bulaga continues to get good reviews, but Colledge hasn't done badly.
FB: Quinn Johnson needs to do some really positive things on a consistent basis. I think he's on the outside looking in right now.
RB: Great chance for Quinn Porter to shine with Lumpkin and Starks nursing hamstring injuries.
WR: James Jones seems to be pulling ahead of Jordy Nelson. Driver may not play, so both should get plenty of reps tonight.
CB: Would like to see Underwood eliminate mental mistakes. Woodson may not play, so he and Lee will get plenty of reps at CB and Nickel. Also hope to see a lot of Sam Shields.
DL: Where is Justin? Is he on the field?
S: Hope to see some progress from Burnett. Will be watching Derrick Martin who looks to be improved this year. He could make Bigby expendable.
ST: I'll take a reasonable amount of competence on the return and coverage units after what we saw last week. Bryan had a pretty good week of practice. I sense he is pulling ahead of Mastay, but the games are what matter most.

I'm gonna be in a house full of Chicken Hawks fans. I'll be bringing a "nice" platter of cheese. Also bringing chicken to throw on the grill. Nothing says "Hawks lose" like dead, burnt bird, from the grill.

According to Bedard: Barnett, Woodson, and Driver were all left in Green Bay because McCarthy wanted to limit wear and tear on those guys.
More according to Bedard: Woodson, Lumpkin, Starks, Joseph, Hawk, Barnett, Jones [Brad], and Driver all didn't make the trip.
Our starting LBs are going to be Poppinga, Bishop, Francois, and Chillar... so don't expect the defense to look respectable.

Agreed
FB: Quinn Johnson needs to do some really positive things on a consistent basis. I think he's on the outside looking in right now.
Quinn is too consistent -- either blows up his guy or whiffs
RB: Great chance for Quinn Porter to shine with Lumpkin and Starks nursing hamstring injuries.

Unsure who is the current #3

Agreed

How many deep passes are being completed? So far so good with Burnett.

Toss-up
Nice overall assessment.

* S Atari Bigby, CB Charles Woodson, RB Kregg Lumpkin, RB James Starks, LB Alex Joseph, LB A.J. Hawk, LB Nick Barnett, LB Brad Jones, WR Donald Driver.
* Jones has a shoulder sprain that happened Thursday night. Didn't make the trip.
* Lineup changes: Brady Poppinga for Matthews, Desmond Bishop for Hawk, Robert Francois for Barnett, Brandon Underwood for Woodson.

It's not really a competition when the backup is playing because the starter is out. I just hope Bishop doesn't look like a retard out there tonight, as is his wont.

Well, I agree with you in the sense that if Bishop doesn't look good, he had better damn well stop whining about not getting enough playing time. This is his "put up or shut up" moment.

Our backup LBs in this game are Frank Zombo, Maurice Simpkins and Spencer Havner. Maybe we should play like a 4-2-5 or something.
Oh wait, also Obiozor. So we have 4 and 4. We're still down 7 preferred starters on defense though.

M3 said before the game that he wanted to see a much better job done on ST tonight

picking on underwood, just like last week
i'm rooting for mike williams. he's a guy i loved in college, but got completely hosed by the NFL and NCAA
be nice to see him get back to form
now that was a weak defensive effort. there might really be reason for concern

there where six or seven guys right on top of jackson on that return. no packer blockers in between
its ridiculous
Lurker64
08-21-2010, 09:26 PM
now that was a weak defensive effort. there might really be reason for concern
Relax. The Packers didn't suit up the following players who likely would have played on that drive if this were a real game and everybody was healthy: Charles Woodson, Clay Matthews, Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk, Brad Jones, and Atari Bigby. If you add in the fact that Al Harris may be ready to go for the beginning of the season, that's seven guys who we were down on defense.
You're just not going to look good playing the 3-4 with Brady Poppinga and Brandon Chillar as your OLBs. Brandon Underwood should not be starting for an NFL team.

Colledge has so much more experience. It's tough for a rook, but Colledge is a backup caliber player and Bulaga looks like he's on track to be a really, really good one. His only problem looks to be experience. Tough decision, but there is a lot of reason for long term excitement with Bulaga.

He just doesn't know what he's doing. He'll have over the top help and he'll play like he doesn't know what he's supposed to be doing.
I'm hoping we can trade a player at another position (TE, FB maybe) for a so/so dime corner. Underwood is just pathetic. I'd be ecstatic with a so/so guy who just knew his job.

Well, a lot of these problems are nothing to worry about.
The CB issue is something that doesn't go away when we get healthy. Harris is no guarantee and injuries at some point are almost a guarantee.
The other issue that's hard to ignore was that dumb ass kick coverage. We had #1 ST's group in there and failed miserably.

Giacomini should be cut. Bedard did a roster breakdown yesterday. He had:

Lang
Giacomini
I'd dump Gia and keep Dietrich. I don't love our backups, but I like them if it shakes out with Dietrich instead of Gia.

Yeah, and having those three as your game-day backups means you can devote OL spots #9 (and #10 if we have one) to developmental guys. But Giacomini can be a developmental guy for only so long. He can run block, but he gets toasted by speed in pass blocking. It's actually quite embarassing.
But if I'm Marshall Newhouse or EDS, I don't feel bad about Giacomini sucking.

Actually, Giacomini needed to not jump on the last play. Flynn got the snap off and the ball spiked just fine, it's just that Breno was already moving forwards.
The dumbass apparently doesn't know that it's a spike play, he really doesn't even need to get out of his set.

Wouldn't be too hard on Francois. He's a UDFA rookie out there thrown into the fire with the starters against the #1 O. He's not going to look good doing that. He didn't look absolutely awful, and I personally chocked up more negative plays to Bishop than to Francois.

I don't know if anyone else saw that article a few weeks back, but Brandon Jackson apparently made some changes in his diet and work ethic. I've never been a huge fan of his, but this could be a breakout year for him. He's a tough, squatty runner. We might be better off behind Ryan Grant than we think. Jackson just looks like a different guy this year.

Well, if we were about the worst last year at ST's. This year, it looks like just having a solid punter and Crosby bouncing back a little, we might move into the 20-25 range.
I guess that's a relative positive, you know, not being the worst.
I'm getting a little tired of the bad coverage units though. Why can't we cover kicks?

Brandon Jackson apparently came into the game in the fourth because Quinn Porter left the game with an ankle injury. That makes the RB position perilously thin. TT may have to swing for depth trades at a couple of positions this year.

Exactly right. Let him do what he does well. Returning punts is something only a few guys can do. Just because a guy can run a 4.2 40 doesn't mean he can return punts. Once he's made the team and has had a chance to relax a little bit, they may be able to revisit the punt return issue.
