The Bucs cut RB Derrick Ward today. I recall wanting him a couple years ago when he was available. Not sure if he has anything in the tank, but he would seem to be an upgrade over Lumpkin/Kuhn.

Wisconsinite Kole Heckendorf was cut by Seattle today.

I seem to recall a news report that he was out of shape and not practicing hard. Coaches were really disappointed in him.

I remember liking the guy who carried the load two years ago when Cadillac went down... Read a story about the difficulty he had in getting to the NFL. Really pulled for the guy, but they seem to have forgot him. Must've been a flash in the pan... since they brought Ward in through free agency to plug the cadillac hole, only to find they didn't have a hole.

No thanks to Derrick Ward.

Bucs Bounce Derrick Ward
The Derrick Ward experiment in Tampa Bay has come to an end.

Derrick Ward's short time as a Buccaneer has come to an end. Sadly, it only cost the Buccaneers $2 million per touchdown.

PewterReport.com is reporting that the six-year veteran—who turned 30-years old on Monday—has been released by the team. Ward played just one season for the Buccaneers after signing a four-year, $17 million free agent contract in 2009.

$6 million of that contract was guaranteed, which means the one rushing touchdown Ward scored in 14 starts last season came at a ridiculous price.

The move doesn’t come as a total shock. Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris recently said that Ward had showed up to camp out of shape.

It showed, too. In three preseason appearances, Ward averaged just 2.5 yards per carry.

With Cadillac Williams as the starter, look for second-year back Kareem Huggins to step into the No. 2 role.

Texans cut Fred Bennett
Bennett is a 6-foot-1, 194-pound defensive back who has started 17 career games, registering 123 tackles, five interceptions, 23 pass deflections and four forced fumbles.

He intercepted three passes as a rookie, but had fallen behind the other cornerbacks on the Texans' depth chart.

"We wanted to give Fred a chance to find another job, so we made the move today," coach Gary Kubiak said. "There's no doubt in my mind and no doubt in Fred's mind that he can play in this league.
Bennett started and had a decent year as a rookie in '07. He ran a 4.47 coming out of college that year. Pretty good production. Good size.

I read that the defensive backs were doing a running drill. Bennett was slower and was in last place, behind everyone else. Then he tripped and fell. So that's how he fell behind the other guys. :D

That's Underwood. Bush is the one with decent coverage, but just a step slow on every pass. Or the one getting penalized.

Saturday they'll cut down to 53 from 75. Not sure why they do it that way... Why not just have the one set of cuts...?

I think it makes sense. This gives teams an opportunity to look at players cut from other teams with one preseason game left to evaluate them in their system, giving these early cuts an opportunity to catch on somewhere else and giving teams one additional method of aquiring talent to fill their rosters before the regular season begins.

I don't see it. 99% of the guys worthy of being picked up make it to the final cut with their original team anyway. If that's the idea, it doesn't work.

I think it's left over from the NFL-E days when there were roster exemptions for NFL-E players that ended with the first cuts. They would go from ~90 to 70, and then they could focus on the last cuts to get down to 53.

Are you serious? Do you really think that TT and his staff don't look at these players? We're talking about the bottom of the roster of teams like the Raiders. I have no doubt that TT knows each player that is released in the league and can quickly determine whether to dismiss or investigate further. People don't get to a GM level without that.

We should sign TE Joe Jon Finley. Then, we'd have a JMike Finley and a JJon Finley.

RB, OLB, CB, and perhaps DL. Those are the positions I'm looking at when analyzing other team's cuts. I have Lumpkin/Johnson at RB, Zombo at OLB, Bush at CB making the team right now. I think all of those guys are replaceable, if the right person gets cut from another team.

Perhaps Harrell, Wynn, and/or Wilson at DL and Peprah, Martin, and/or Blackmon at S are replaceable also. Perhaps.

I don't see us picking up a QB, WR, TE, OL, or ILB.

Well, something is going to happen. One way or another we're going to get down to 53. With our roster being so deep at a couple positions and so shallow at a couple other positions, it makes sense that some balancing effect is going to happen before the final 53 is set.

The Broncos traded a 2010 first-round pick for cornerback Alphonso Smith, but the 2009 second-rounder is now on the bubble. The Texans could part ways with high-price cornerback Jacques Reeves.

Any of those guys a significant upgrade over Shields & Lee & Underwear?

And do any of those teams need a backup center/guard named Spitz?

Spitz might start on the buffalo line. I have no idea about the cb's

Would tedly take on a 5-9 corner? The last small corner the Pack tried was, who, Ahmad Carroll? Or Terrell Buckley?

They seem to not like smallish corners after Moss came into their nightmares. How I hated watching those games.

Cowboys waived CB/KR Bryan McCann.

McCann was impressive on returns during exhibition action. The Cowboys are also high on his ball skills, but they simply ran out of roster space for the undrafted rookie out of SMU.

Colts waived RB/KR Brandon James and WR Sam Giguere.

It looks like Devin Moore has beaten them both out for the kickoff specialist job. James was a star returner at Florida for four seasons, but Moore's numbers were superior in limited exhibition action. Giguere's best bet is to return to Canada to carve out a long career in the CFL.

So as I walked out of 30 Rock after proclaiming to the Notre Dame halftime audience that neither the Bengals nor the Vikings are interested in receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, I started to get e-mails from readers regarding a report from FOX 6 in Wisconsin, which cited a source who said that Houshmandzadeh had joined the Vikings.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, it hasn't happened.

The source didn't say that it would never happen, but it hasn't happened yet.

Houshmandzadeh was a hot commodity in March 2009, generating big-money offers from the Vikings, Seahawks, and Bengals. But the football-watching world quickly learned that T.J. loves him some him -- and that he loves to talk about how much he wants the ball.

Not coincidentally, the market for his services has gone dry.

Chase Coffman cut before ever playing a snap for Bengals
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 4, 2010 8:07 PM ET
Taken in the third round of the 2009 draft as the most productive pass-catching tight end in NCAA history, Chase Coffman won't ever play a regular season snap for the Bengals.

The team cut him on Saturday after he struggled with a foot injury, and then blocking as a pro. It's sad to see him dumped, but this can't be a surprise for anyone that watched Hard Knocks last year. Coffman was lucky not to get cut then.

The Bengals also waived/injured fullback Fui Vakapuna and waived Abdul Hodge. (Man, Tebow's power is far-reaching.) We mentioned Matt Jones was waived earlier. Here are the rest of the Bengals cuts:

Kicker Dave Rayner, guard Isaac Sowells, safety Marvin White, defensive tackle Orien Harris, safety Kyries Hebert, tight end Darius Hill, running back James Jones, defensive tackle Clinton McDonald, safety Rico Murray, wide receiver Maurice Purify, wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe, guard Otis Hudson, tackle Gabriel Manns, safety Jeromy Miles, linebacker Vincent Rey, tackle Chris Rodgers, cornerback Johnny Sears, and fullback Joe Tronzo.

Mike Nugent won the team's kicker battle. Wide receivers Quan Cosby and Jerome Simpson both made the team.

Anybody know if Gilbert might be a better fit as a 3-4 DE. He's 6-5 285--which is ideal size for 3-4 DE.

Chicago Bears

The team cut its top two picks from 2009—defensive end Jarron Gilbert(notes) and wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias(notes)—both of whom were third-round picks.

Gilbert had two sacks and a forced fumble in the final two exhibitions but was beaten out by Henry Melton(notes) and rookie Corey Wootton(notes). Coaches regarded Gilbert as a 'tweener"—too big for end in the Bears' system and too tall and light for tackle.

I'm scared shitless about nickel. Sure would be nice to get a veteran corner that had a little left in the tank. Not sure Dre' Bly would fit that description.

Gilbert has the perfect 5-tech body, which is why it was weird when the Bears took him. I haven't watched him play much for the Bears (he's mostly played in the preseason, and why would I watch Bears preseason games), but if he's looked even halfway decent in terms of functional strength, motor, and athleticism, I'd probably be willing to cut Wilson for him.

I'm with Harv. For six weeks, we get to see if Shields, Bush, Lee or Underwood can finally grasp the position while games count.

That didn't work last year. I think at best we might find a CB in these 9 pages that might fit a specific need, ie. can only play inside at the slot. Or something like that.

2009 fifth-rounders get deep-sixed at surprising pace (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/09/05/2009-fifth-rounders-get-deep-sixed-at-surprising-pace/)
Posted by Mike Florio on September 5, 2010 8:01 PM ET
To help build interest in the late rounds of every draft, the NFL points out that the Patriots found quarterback Tom Brady in round six.

In the future, the league probably shouldn't mention as each selection process approaches the fate of the fifth round of the 2009 draft.

Tipped off by a league source to the high rate of failure from round five a year ago, we pulled up the full list and checked the website of each team. By our count, 18 of the fifth-round selections currently aren't on the 53-man roster or injured reserve list for the teams that picked them.

That leaves only 19 (including five supplemental picks) who are on either the roster or IR.

Gone from the rosters are Falcons defensive back William Middleton (No. 138 overall), Chiefs tackle Cody Brown (No. 139), Cowboys defensive back DeAngelo Smith (No. 143), Bills linebacker Nic Harris (No. 147), Ravens tight end Davon Drew (No. 149), Giants quarterback Rhett Bomar (No. 151), Eagles tight end Cornelius Ingram (No. 153), Bears linebacker Marcus Freeman (No. 154), Buccaneers tackle Xavier Fulton (No. 155), Eagles defensive back Macho Harris (No. 157), Redskins linebacker Cody Glenn (No. 158), Eagles tackle Fenuki Tupou (No. 159), Rams receiver Brooks Foster (No. 160), Packers tackle Jamon Meredith (No. 162), Cardinals guard Herman Johnson (No. 167), Steelers defensive back Joe Burnett (No. 168), Steelers running back Frank Summers (No. 169), and Patriots tackle George Bussey (No. 170).
