Notebook: Packers hold off on signing Edinger

There are no signs the Packers will sign Paul Edinger immediately, even though the two kickers trying to replace departed free agent Ryan Longwell had shaky performances in the team's intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night at Lambeau Field.

The Packers had Edinger in for a workout last week, but Edinger's agent, Ken Harris, said he didn't hear from the team Sunday.

The Packers showed interest in Edinger early in the offseason, and Harris had called their personnel department later in the summer to tell them the seventh-year pro was rejuvenated and kicking the ball better than ever after working out in Florida all offseason. So before camp opened, the Packers scheduled last week's workout.

"My sense is they needed to know what he looks like after this offseason of working on his own," Harris said, "so if the need arises, they know what they have with him. Two other teams are kind of doing the same thing right now."

The Packers told Harris that Edinger made 12 of 14 field goals in his workout, with one miss coming on a bad hold, and the other on a 51-yard attempt.

In Saturday night's scrimmage, fifth-year pro Billy Cundiff and second-year pro Dave Rayner each went 3-for-5 kicking from the same distances in a field-goal period at the end of the night.

Cundiff missed from 39 yards and 52 yards, and made kicks from 29, 34 and 49. Rayner missed from 39 and 49, and made kicks from 29, 34 and 52.

"My experience with the kicking game is to see when the lights come on," coach Mike McCarthy said after the scrimmage. "Like we've said since the spring, we'll take the whole preseason to make sure we've got the right guys."

IMO, we still need to bring in someone other then what we already have in camp. and PE, even though he's played for some horrible evil teams, can kick outside in bad weather. and he's not that bad
